Let me preface this by saying that when it comes to being sick I'm just as bad (if not worse...eek that hurt to type!) as a man. When I don't feel well I want people to know about it. I mean, if misery loves company than when I'm miserable I want company. I usually prefer my mom when I'm sick, but she's 400 miles away so I have to make do on my own. Which sucks.
I feel like crap. Not your ordinary crap though. The kind of crap you step in, then beat your shoe on the porch to knock off the worst, and then you scrub in the grass to get the last bit off. That kind of crap.
Remember that sore throat and headache I'd mentioned before? Well, it hasn't gotten better. As a matter of fact it has gotten worse. I spent a pretty miserable night last night. Isn't it funny how a sore throat can make everything else feel worse? My stomach hurts (probably because when I swallow I want to gag), my nose hurts (from all the blowing...which has gotten to be painful as the hairs have decided to booger up), and I have a headache that won't quit. If I thought cutting off my head at the collarbone would help I'd do it!
At work we had this important meeting and my desk was a complete mess so I knew I could only call in sick if I were dead. I took a small drugstore in my purse and went off to work. Thankfully, my kids took pity on me today and were relatively quiet and so well behaved. Lunch was interesting. It turned out to be pretty hard to chew with my mouth closed when I couldn't breathe out of my nose. I spent thirty minutes with a napkin held in front of my face. Luckily for me, this whatever-the-heck-it-is has been going around so everyone understood. I'm not feeling worse (even though I'm not feeling much better either) so I still plan to go to work tomorrow. I haven't had any fever and with all the stuff going around I keep thinking that if I can make it I should make it. What if I catch something else that is worse and I really need to be at home in bed?
So, there is my sad tale. Please send me feel better wishes and throat spray. I could use them both.

Frightful Weather
Remember that holiday song, "Oh the weather outside is frightful..."? Well, the weather here is pretty darn frightful! All weekend long the temperatures have hovered around the forties. There was even snow on Thanksgiving in my hometown! We weren't there (we were at my grandparents' house) but according to the television there was 4-6 inches of the white stuff. I love that! What I'm not loving is all the wet and cold weather that followed me home today. It is currently 40 and the rain hasn't let up all afternoon. Now I know what you Northern readers are thinking...what a wimp. True, but remember that I'm from Texas! I say that like it explains so much.
Anyway, I had big plans of getting home early in the afternoon and getting a jump start on getting my Christmas decorations up. Unfortunately, I've pushed that back until tomorrow. Getting to sleep last night was a chore and staying that way was even harder. Plus, the wet weather has brought on a runny nose and sore throat. When I got home I crawled under the heavy covers and took a nice long nap. I'm still excited about getting my tree put up and decorations out, but I think I'll just start fresh tomorrow.
Thanksgiving was great! The food was plentiful and delicious. I even snagged a Glad container of dressing to bring home! But, of course it wouldn't be a holiday without a little misadventure in the kitchen. In my family, my Mimi, Mom, and I are the only ones that like sweet potatoes. I volunteered to get them ready for the oven. I know how to smash and stir in ingredients. I just wasn't too sure about the recipe. I added some of this and some of that and covered them with mini marshmallows. Sounds fine right? Something terrible happened in the oven. When we pulled them out, the marshmallows were a little too brown and the potatoes were a horrible sludge brownish black. Not wanting to write them off completely, I tried them. The tasted great, but boy were they terrible to look at! My Mimi said, "Steffany your potatoes look like heck!" and that was the nicest thing that was said! I'm still puzzled by what went so wrong, but even if they weren't the most eye catching thing on the table at least they tasted okay!
I hope that everyone had a Thanksgiving that was just as wonderful as mine turned out to be!

Happy Thanksgiving!
The holiday has officially started! I'm very much looking forward to going and visiting with family. After sleeping late, making my famous pineapple pepper cheese ball (seriously y'all...it's wonderful!), and packing I'm heading out. Everyone on my mom's side of the family will be there for the holiday. That is pretty amazing that all of us can still get together and bond over food and multiple games of hand and foot. When I talked to my mom this weekend, she told me to be sure and bring some of those plastic leftover containers. I love that!
Sounds crazy I know, but leftover containers mean that there will be leftovers. I'm hoping for extra dressing. In our family, dressing is an art. Those dried mini squares that come in a box are not dressing. Like I said, dressing is an art. I wonder if it is a Southern thing? Anyway, dressing is what I'm hoping to bring home! Even if there isn't any left, there will still be a bunch of leftovers to choose from. Now I know this will sound twisted, but I love that we're going to have leftovers. I love that we know we're going to have leftovers.
Those leftovers mean that we didn't have just enough. It means that we had more than enough. A lot of families out there don't have enough...food, time, love. Just today one of my little kids at school told me that her lights went off last night and wouldn't come back on. Then she told me that her daddy said they were going to have to start sleeping at her grandmother's house. My heart broke for her and her family. I've been really blessed in my life. I try very hard not to take that for granted, but it is stories like that which really cause me to stop and count each and every blessing in my life. Even the small ones.
So, to all my friends (the here-in-the-real-world ones and the blog sphere ones) I hope you have many many leftovers this holiday!

The Review...Picture Style

The other morning I started out the door to be greeted by this sight. I had a little "friend" trapped inside the screen on my front door. Thankfully I was on the glass side. I'm not sure exactly how he go in there, but he obviously found his way out because he wasn't there when I got home. Thankfully!
Thanks for all the words of luck on the whole paper making project! That whole day was crazy. I have fifteen kids in my class and one teacher was out (without a sub) so we had to split her class. There were five extra kids in my classroom that day too. If you're a teacher you probably know the difference one new child can make so you'll appreciate the fact that I had five extra! Anyway, I called the kids back in small groups and helped them press it through the screen. It was pretty messy, but the kids seemed to love it! And in the end, that is all that matters. They were pretty excited on Friday to actually see it dried and be able to take it home. This was the paper mush (it was soupy, cold, and kind of smelled). I was happy to dump it out Thursday afternoon!
I had my hands full just getting the kids to make their paper and lay it on the towels that I didn't bring out the camera, but this is what my trial run piece of paper looked like. It was a little thick at the bottom (paper after my own heart!) but it is paper nonetheless!
Yesterday, a bunch of friends and I went to the Texas Renaissance Festival. It was fun! It was pretty much like stepping back into another time. I wore jeans and a long sleeve t-shirt, but there were many there dressed in costume. I suppose they wanted to really get into the spirit of the day. Costumes ranged from the royality garb to a thong and much too small bra with chain metal hanging off it. Anyway, there were many shows to enjoy. My favorite was the jousting. Even if it is fake and the winner predetermined it was still fun! We happened to be sitting in England's section and guess what? Sir Thomas won!
Another show we saw was the Washer Women. It was pretty funny too. I loved this sign...made me think of my own laundry. Though I'd never say that laundry was fun clean or otherwise!

Disaster In The Making
It isn't often that you know when disaster will be striking. I mean, who would want to know right?! Well, I know. It's happening tomorrow. Intrigued?
It all started on Monday. See, we're learning about natural resources this week in Science. I'm teaching these kiddos to appreciate and conserve things like soil, water, plants, air....those kind of things. I also happen to be one of those teachers that think Science is best hands on. I think this might be the start of the disaster.
Well, in the teacher's edition, there was this seemly simple six step "recipe" for making paper. It involves newspaper strips, big tub of water, and window screening. Well, I got the newspaper torn into strips Tuesday afternoon (fully expecting that the book was right and the mushing process would only take "a few hours") so we'd be ready to go this morning. Not long after I put the water into the tub I noticed a big water puddle on the table. What the heck? My big tub leaks? See, I'd like to think that an experienced teacher would say, "This is the sign of something not going right. Let's just scrap this idea."
My solution was to stick some rags under the tub and let it set overnight. I really thought it was just dripping from where I'd had it in the sink. Oh who am I kidding?! If I'd really thought that I wouldn't have put rags under it. Dang it I really wanted to make paper! Well, this morning I came in and all those rags were soaked, but more importantly...my paper was NOT mush. Those strips of newspaper were supposed to be disintegrated into paper "mush" pulp. I had wet newspaper strips. Did I mention that I do Science first thing in the morning?
So, I quickly came up with the idea of having a teachable moment and letting the kids know that sometimes things do not go as planned when doing experiments. And, I told them that they could help me speed up the process. I let them all get their hands deep into that wet newspaper and mulch it up. They loved it! The best part is that all that squishing pretty much turned it into gray mush. It appeared that my experiment was back on track.
This afternoon I went ahead and cut the window screening into pieces. The theory is to dip this screening into the mush and then press the water out leaving a thin layer of mush to dry and turn into paper. Learning from yesterday's little opps, I decided to try out this dipping thing. Well, good thing I did. First, this mush stuff is pretty darn soupy. And it's not exactly thin either...more lumpy. There is no way the kids are going to be able to press out all the water. Trying to salvage this, I folded the screen up and wrung it out. This worked...sorta. I'm kidding myself. This is going to be an absolute mess.
Right now, I'm thinking that instead of them each getting to make a sheet of paper we'll do some sort of table group thing. That way we only have to go through this process five times instead of 15 times. Did I mention that I only have 30 minutes to finish this up tomorrow morning? Oh, and when I thought it would be an awesome learning experience I invited the principal to come and see? And one other thing...my evaluation is due any day now.
Yep, disaster. Tomorrow morning. 8:00am. Wish me luck!

With A Thankful Heart
It is hard to believe, but there are only six school days left before the Thanksgiving holiday. I'm happy about that fact because first, it's a holiday and second, I'll get to spend several days with my family, and third, cornbread dressing and cranberry sauce. Also, I put up all the Christmas decorations that weekend too. It is hard for me to keep that excitement to a minimum! Anyway, since Thanksgiving is literally around the corner, I thought I'd take some time and reflect on some of the many things I'm thankful for in my life.
Family
I love my family...every last nutty one of them! Being an only child, I've always been close to my parents. Every memory I have of them is wrapped up in love. As I've gotten older I've come to appreciate more and more the wings my parents gave me. I know that my parents will support me (though not always the decision I'm making) and love me no matter what. That kind of love and support has allowed me to grow and find my own place in the world. For that I'll always be thankful. I know I don't say it enough, but I feel it all the same. I love my family!
Friends
This is a pretty corny saying, but friends really are the family you choose for yourself. (And y'all know how I feel about family!) I've always made friends easily. Along the way, I've discovered that those friendships most precious to me require the most work. That work has resulted in many long lasting friendships. I'm lucky to still have friendships with girls I met in Brownies in the first grade. I've also learned to appreciate the different aspects of friendships. There are those friendships made the "old fashion" way (like those from school or with co-workers) and then there are you guys...the "new fashion" way! If friends really are the family you pick for yourself then I've done some pretty darn good pickin'!
My Passport
I love pulling that little blue book out of the desk drawer and knowing that there are all sorts of possibilities there. I know the travel bug was partially passed from my parents, but they'd laugh at that! They loved to take day trips...no plan no certain destination in mind. I'd grab my pillow, a book, and music and grudgingly get in the backseat. Who would have thought that girl would grow up to want to explore everything in the world?! It is only fair to say that I still hate that "by the seat of your pants" kind of travel, but the going, seeing, and doing runs deep in my veins. For that sense of exploration, I'm grateful!
That Flaky Boss
In the short years that I've been part of the working set, I've only had two bosses that were major flakes. Don't get me wrong...you can love that flake but working for her is the pits. I'm not sure I'd use love to describe my current one, but I'm thankful for her all the same. Some days I can't see it, but I'm learning patience and perfecting the art of working with others. I've discovered that I'm not perfect (well which I already knew) but no one else is either. I'm sure somewhere down the road I'll appreciate the easy boss because I've learned to deal in a mature manner with the one that isn't so easy. The whole give and take is a growing thing for me. And growing is always a good thing, right?!
This 1970s Mobile Home
When I thought about my "first place" I never exactly envisioned this place. It's had its share of fixer upper moments but that has caused me to appreciate all the days when nothing goes wrong. And well all those times when wild life comes in for a visit have taught me that I can handle killing my own bugs. I don't like it and I still wish my daddy was close enough to yell for, but at least I don't scream and want to jump on the nearest piece of furniture. I've had a lot of good memories in this old place. I know I'll take them all with me when I moved to that place I have been envisioning!
The Crush
Oh the crush...if he only knew, right?! I enjoy that little something that happens when I think about him. It's still sweet and good. Anyway, though he probably doesn't have a clue I'm thankful for him. He helps me remember that you never know the possibilities that life will toss at you. Sometimes you just have to be brave and decide something is worth the effort...even if in the end it isn't how you thought it would be. Self, be brave!
Sudden Link
I know I know...y'all are rolling your eyes. Only I would be thankful for the cable company right?! Sometimes you just have to be thankful for the simple pleasures. Curling up on my bed or the love seat and watching something on TV is one of my favorite simple pleasures. Comfy pajamas, Sonic commercials, and the remote...what isn't to be thankful for?!
The list could go on for a very long time. I've been truly and well blessed in my life. So, I'm looking forward to this time of year with a thankful heart. A very thankful heart!

Shopping Safari
Thursday I took a mental health day and went to the annual Houston Nutcracker Market. It is this huge Christmas arts, crafts, home decor show. So many pretties to see...so in the Christmas spirit now! I went with two great girls and we had a wonderful time. There was so much to see! I think it has already been decided that this will be something we do every year. Here are most of my finds. A few things will show up later, but they are Christmas presents and I can't give away the surprise!
I wish y'all's computers were scratch and sniff! On a recent therapy (of the retail variety) session I found these beautiful fall stems in a 75% off basket. I decided some scented pine cones would look great in the bowl. It turned into a great center piece for the coffee table! And did I mention they were scented?! Smells heavenly in here now!
I found this curved sign and I thought it would look great on the entertainment center with a nativity beside it. Hmm...maybe I'll have to snap again once the Christmas decorations go up!
This isn't the best picture, but I found these stars (this is the big one and I have two small ones that will look great after a coat of blue paint) that will fit my Americana living room theme perfectly!
Two of my more unusual finds from the Nutcracker Market were a spaghetti sauce and tea. I say unusual because I don't much care for either thing. But, when you have to wait in line for ten minutes to get a jar of this stuff you kind of have to buy a jar to see what all the fuss is about. Seriously, I think this sauce is the most popular thing from the Market! Also, I love cranberries and the sample was really good. It was sort of like tea flavored cranberry juice. I know...doesn't sound yummy from that description but it was!

Some Much Needed Time (Updated)
Tomorrow is Friday! Yea right?!
I'm taking Thursday off for some much needed me time. I need to relax my body and relax my mind for a while. So, I put in for a mental health day (my principal actually accepted that as a reason!) and my weekend will start a little bit early. You might be asking if I forgot about Friday, but that is parent conference day. So far I've only had a handful RSVP so that day won't be taxing at all. Therefore, it doesn't count on the whole school week.
I'm going to spend the night with a friend in the big city tomorrow night and then a fun-filled day relaxing. Sounds fun right?! Now don't be jealous...it isn't a good look for you!
***Y'all, I've never been to something quite like what I went to today. I had so much fun and my wallet didn't. LOL Anyway, I'm going to post some pictures of my finds later this weekend. I totally have retail therapy down!***

Crock Pot Chef
Lately I've been eating out more. I know this comes from all the late nights at school and the need to just come home and do absolutely nothing mind bending. Anyway, all this eating out has but a strain on my budget and my rear. So, I committed myself to going back to cooking.
As y'all know, cooking is sort of an adventure for me. Normally I make stuff that can be popped into the microwave or nuked in the toaster oven. That stuff is easy and normally smoke alarm proof. Feeling a little daring, I decided to try some stuff that isn't in my normal routine.
Yesterday (you know when I had to kill time at Walmart because I forgot about time change...yeah I'm still bitter about getting up at normal time on a day I could actually sleep late) when I was at Walmart, I saw a small pork roast and thought, "Hey, that's not something I've tried before!" I thought it would be perfect in my crock pot I got in college. Side note...I've had that thing for about three years and have used it about that same amount of times. Anyway, I put that roast in my basket and grabbed some squash (a zucchini and a yellow squash), an onion, and some red potatoes. I just knew this was going to end tasty!
After getting all the groceries put away, I drug out the crock pot and dusted it off. I wasn't totally sure how I was supposed to put it all together, but I got my veggies cut up and in the crock pot. I was proud...I had a beautiful mix of red, green, and yellow. Colors equals healthy right?! Anyway, I put the roast on top and sprinkled on some onion soup mix. I wasn't sure how much water to add so I figured more is better. I put in a cup of water (which I now know should really be just a dab will do you) and turned it on. I was such a nerd...I kept checking on it every five minutes. Apparently a watched crock pot doesn't boil either! I finally left it alone and went on about my business...namely laundry.
Now, it wasn't perfect. The roast was a little bit dry (despite all the juice it was sitting in) and the veggies were a little mushy (thanks Mama...only carrots should go on the bottom) but there were no smoke alarms going off and it was pretty good. So, here is to more daring adventures in the kitchen!
Oh, and if you have any great crock pot recipes you'd like to share please pass them along in the comments!

Moments Of Dork-ness
Have you ever had one of those moments when you absolutely were a dork? Well, I had one this morning. Even my mama, who loves me dearly, called me a goof ball. Let me stop right here...everyone is aware that last night was time change right? I know it now, but the fact escaped me earlier today.
I went to bed at a reasonable time last night. I knew I would have to get up and get a move on because I was going to meet my friend for church this morning. I rolled over and stared at the clock (which said 7:13am). This seemed like a ridiculously early time to get up on a weekend. I rolled over and tried to go back to sleep, but I was already awake. Darn. I finally crawled out about 7:30am (or so the clock said...lying little electronic device).
I went about my morning routine...wash my face, get grossed out by the over-grown-ness of my eyebrows, jump in the shower, you know, the usual. After my shower, I got back in bed and noticed that I had a text message waiting for me. Unfortunately, my friend picked up some nasty food poisoning and wouldn't be meeting me for church. I noticed that the text was received at 7:23am. I didn't remember hearing the beep but sometimes I miss it.
Now, I'd like to say that this was the point in which I remembered about time change. I could have had a nice laugh and gone back to bed, but nope. I continued getting ready for church...totally unaware. I was half way to church when it dawned on me that it was time change the night before. I was going to be an hour early to church. Darn...again.
About that time, I had a horrifying thought. It was the weekend and I had willingly gotten out of bed at 6:30am. Darn. Darn darn darn. Also, now I had some wacky time to kill. I didn't have enough time to make it worth going back home. I'd get there and have about ten minutes and then I'd need to leave again. I had too much time to just drive around for a little bit. I'm cheap and gas is expensive. So, what to do? I went to Walmart. I needed to buy groceries anyway.
So, blogger friends...learn from me. Go set your clocks back an hour!

And So It Begins!
Christmas!
Seriously, I'm so excited about and ready for this holiday. I love this time of year. Everyone seems a little bit happier and even the hustle and bustle of the season is appealing. I was in Walgreens Wednesday morning (incredibly early because I forgot I was responsible for the cookies and milk for the activity that day) and they already had the Christmas trees up and decorated! I think I hummed Christmas carols all morning.
I do love this time of year, but it's not for the gift-getting. Well, I wouldn't be completely honest if I didn't admit to liking that part, but it isn't the main reason why I love this season. This season appeals to me because first it represents a huge part of my faith. The Christmas season always causes me to reflect upon the greatest gift ever given...Jesus. Also, this season is about family and loved ones. And in case you couldn't tell, I'm very much a family and loved one kind of girl.
Life is pretty stressful right now. Unfortunately for me, life isn't picky. It's spread the stress everywhere...work, family, my love life, my check book, and friends. Stress doesn't always mean bad stuff but it just means stress. Thankfully, Christmas shopping, Christmas wrapping, Christmas card writing, holiday baking (I know...who would have thought this girl would actually spend hours in the kitchen cooking!), holiday parties, and such take that stress right away. I'm so happy this season is beginning!
Now, if you'll excuse me...I'm feeling in the mood to make a Christmas gift list!

Happy Halloween

One of my sweet kids brought me a little jack-o-lantern today for Halloween! Her parents had drawn a face on an orange for me and written Happy Halloween Ms. Stewart on the back. I thanked her for the cute jack-o-lantern and she quickly informed me that it was really just an orange. What a cute idea and it totally made my day! Gotta love sweet "homemade" gifts from kids!
Today was a half day staff development day. The kids went home at noon and the teachers went to a meeting. I know this is going to sound like a rant (and maybe it is just a little bit) but just bear with me. As a teacher, I'm already over-whelmed by all the paperwork that comes with teaching. There are so many things to do and assessments to give. I already feel that sometimes all that assessing gets in the way of actual teaching. Anyway, today more work was dumped in our laps. One teacher looked at me and said, "Is it too late to change careers?" I'm sure she was joking, but seriously...how many straws before the camel breaks?
All that said to just say that those sweet and thoughtful (and almost always simple) gifts from kids really brighten the days. I'd like to say I treasured it. Well, I did...right up until lunch. Tastiest jack-o-lantern I've ever eaten!
Hope everyone's Halloween is full of more treats than tricks!

The Gourd Life
Well, I can officially say that gourds really aren't my thing. When I looked at the plethora of gourds on display I simply saw over grown potato looking things. But, some people obviously see a blank slate on which to develop their creativity. The final products were amazing! I gave in and bought a dipper gourd but so far I'm uninspired. I'm trying to think of what I can do to it paper crafting-wise. If anything sparks I'll show off my craftiness!
The family part of the weekend was good too, though some what awkward. This seems to just be the theme when we get together with my dad's family. No one wants this to happen, but it just some how does. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed getting to visit with my parents and despite some of the bumps I enjoyed seeing my aunts again too.
Oh, and in case you were wondering, there were no flashers either!

It's All About The Gourds
This week is done...thank you Lord! For some reason I thought not being a firsty would make life easier. Apparently not. It was "everything is due" day...grades, assessments, lesson plans, the works. I'm so ready for the weekend!
I'm heading out of town tomorrow morning. I'm meeting my parents and dad's sisters in Waco this weekend for a gourd festival. Seriously, I know. Gourds aren't really my thing, but maybe I'll learn something. Basically, I'm going to visit with family that I don't see very often (and oh yeah there is a story there about that) and a little bit because it's the middle of Fall and people should go to gourd type things right?!
I'm taking an open mind and my digital camera. Updates when I return home Sunday. I wonder if I'll see any gourds like this...
I think this dude is called The Flasher! This is even funnier because my very proper Mama sent me this in an email. LOL! Oh my, obscene squash.

Burn Baby Burn
This week has been perfect...well as far as the weather is concerned. It's been very Fall-like. The temperatures have hovered right around 60-65. I love it! Winter is my favorite season. I enjoy the bundling up and cold noses. Unfortunately, living in Texas I don't get too many bundling up type days. So, I truly enjoy the days of Fall when the temperatures dip low enough to require using the sheet, blanket, and the comforter. I love pulling out the jackets and long sleeved shirts. I love it all!
One thing I don't love...turning the central heating and air to heat for the first time in the season. Monday was the start of particularly low nightly temperatures. When I got home Monday, I set the thermostat to 65 and waited. Nothing. I figured it would dip low enough to come on before I went to bed. It didn't. This week has been one stressful one at work so I had many other things on my mind than the heat. I crawled into bed early (bundled up in pajama bottoms, t-shirt, and socks) and thankfully fell right to sleep. Imagine my shock to wake up about an hour later to the smoke alarm going off!
I must sleep deep because when I'm startled awake I feel shaky and my stomach hurts. Anyway, I immediately smelled the air (couldn't smell smoke) and reached around in the bedside nightstand drawer for my glasses. I got those on and I couldn't see anything that looked like fire, but I could certainly hear the smoke alarm. In my house I have one above the bedroom door and another one above the spare bedroom door at the opposite end of the house. The one above my door wasn't going off. So, I wondered into the living room. Nothing seemed out of place...nothing even smelled burnt. I hit the lights and grabbed a pillow off the couch. I went to wave it in front of the smoke detector and nearly took out everything on the top shelf of my bookcase. Finally, I was able to wave enough air in front of the dumb thing to get it to shut up.
I peeked in the spare bedroom, but everything seemed to be in place. Then it dawned on me...the air had kicked in. Sure, it is warm air coming up out of the floor, but enough to set off the smoke detector?! I thought about yanking the battery out but decided I'd rather be safe (and jarred right out of bed) than sorry. Thankfully, it didn't go off again. I guess it was just the first-of-the-season stinky air thing.
And speaking of smoke detectors and fire safety, the local fire department came out to do some demonstrations for the kids this week at school. It's Red Ribbon Week (you know...let's all be drug and alcohol free) and this year we're focusing on making good choices. The firemen bring a ladder truck and a fire trailer so the kids can practice exiting a house safely. The kids got a kick out of the whole experience. They especially loved getting to jump out the window to safety!
Well, while the kids enjoyed the fire trailer, the teachers enjoyed the firemen. Most of them were older guys, but there was one guy that was so hot! (That sounds so high school...lol!) Of course that started the joking about "Well, you can light me on fire anytime you want if he's what is coming to put me out!" and "If I'm on fire I stop, drop, and he rolls on top of me!". You know...completely inappropriate stuff for school! Believe me, it was the perfect mood lightening moment. Did I mention we're pretty stressed out at school?
Anyway, I'm enjoying this touch of Fall to the max because it probably won't be around long. If you live where there are four distinct seasons, please enjoy some of the Fall and Winter temperatures and weather for me!

Random And Weird...Yep That Is Me!
If you've been reading, well since yesterday, you know that have a thing for questionnaire type things. I think this stems from the fact that I'm a curious person by nature. Sometimes I'm reading someone's blog and I just want to ask the weirdest question or know the most random thing. Also, it doesn't hurt when someone asks you to do this type of thing! Yep, I was tagged by Jaded. Thank you! So, fellow readers and or bloggers...here is to getting to know more about each other.
Rules: I'm supposed to give seven random and weird facts about myself and then tag seven other people. I'm not going to do that because I don't like this rule. And if you've known me long you should realize that I follow the ones I like and try to find a way around the ones I don't.
1. Random: Since I have to get up at the crack of dawn (well really before the crack because it's still dark outside when I get up) I watch TV to get me going. I'm not sure how I stumbled on it, but I've gotten hooked on re-runs of Coach. I remember watching it when I was younger (when my parents would let me) and now it's a lot funnier since I know what all those jokes and innuendos actually mean!
2. Weird: I can't pee without first checking the shower to make sure that no one is hiding in there. I know it's completely irrational but I can't help it. I guess I don't want to literally get caught with my pants down. Though seriously if someone ever did jump out I'd be in the right place because the crap would probably be scared out of me. Too much info...sorry!
3. Random: I still have a crush. I've refrained from calling it inappropriate because what defines inappropriate? It's all about rationalizing baby!
4. Weird: This is completely unladylike and in some circles it is pretty gross, but I think farts are funny. It's one of my "guy" traits. Sad right? Did you know that the normal human body farts 12-40 times a day?! Seriously! How can you not find that funny?!
5. Random: One of my biggest fears is living a life of unfulfilled dreams. I dream a lot. I have things I want to try or things I want to do, but sometimes I settle for them just being dreams. I settle because I know that it is completely going to be out of character for me. I know that it is something no one expects and that some might even be disappointed in me. There are certain aspects of my life that only I control. It's selfish and frankly I don't care. I'll make the final decision, but there are some dreams that will remain just that because I can't live with just thinking of myself. I've had many dreams that I've been able to fulfill and I'm still dreaming. I just want the realities and dreams to balance out in the end!
6. Weird: I don't like lipstick. I prefer lip gloss. I usually feel too pale to wear lipstick...hence the gloss.
7. Random: I have picture frames out in my living room that don't have any pictures in them. Sometimes I just like the frame.
Okay, so there are seven facts (some random, some weird, and some things you probably already knew). If you're up to it, take up the random and weird challenge. It'll save me having to ask you later!

Beg, Steal, Borrow
It's been a while since I've done one of those questionnaire thingies. Yeah...I'm kind of addicted to them!
What kind of SOAP is in your bathtub right now? I guess we're going on the premise that liquid body wash isn't the same as SOAP. I have a bar of Zest in there...scent Linen Fresh
Do you have any watermelon in your refrigerator? Nope
What would you change about your living room? I'd get rid of my current entertainment center and get a new one.
Are the dishes in your dishwasher clean or dirty? What dishwasher...I'm the dishwasher. So, umm that means the few in the sink are dirty.
What is in your fridge? I bet this turns out to be embarrassing. 2 cartons of milk (one past the date and one fixing to go), bottled water, string cheese, lunch meat, some wilted lettuce, and some Mandarin oranges. What? It is almost the end of the month and the supplies have been depleted.
What is on top of your refrigerator? my lunchbox, a small ice chest, and a cauldron
What color or design is your shower curtain? I have a solid blue one and then a clear one with some fibers in it. Kind of mulberryish style.
How many plants are in your home right now? live plants? That would be zero, but I've got some pretty fake greenery.
Is your bed made right now? No...it's not sheet changing day
How many pillows do you sleep with? 5 regular ones and one body pillow...I usually settle down with the body pillow and two of the regular ones.
Do you sleep with any lights on at night? Nope, not unless I'm sick at my stomach and then I leave my night light on
Do you have a welcome mat on your front porch? I wouldn't say it was welcoming. It's just plain green and kind of rough to the touch on the bottom of the foot.
Chore you hate doing the most? All of them...I hate them all equally
Any retro items are in your home? Retro...hmm. I don't know
Do you keep any kind of protection weapons in your home? No. I have some knives in the kitchen though.
What does your home smell like right now? Like something was burned in the oven. That means I tried to cook something for dinner. I think something just ran over and was burning on the bottom of the oven.
Ever been on your roof? Nope
In case of fire, what are the items in your house which you’d grab if you only could make one quick trip? That is tough, but I guess I'd grab my purse, my current scrapbook, and the VIP (very important papers) folder from the file cabinet. I'd want to drag out the cedar chest but I don't think that would be any one's definition of a "quick trip" item.
So, a little more insight into what makes me tick. Learn anything interesting?!

Doing The Do
Ear update: Those "miracle" drop are in my hand and currently in my ear (four times a day no less) and still the bulge remains. Before I heard nothing because the bulge was caused by air. Now I hear a sloshy sound when I move my head. It really is fascinating the noises your body can make...especially when you're tuned into the sounds. Everyone knows you hear things when you can't hear right?!
I have it on good authority that it is certainly okay to devote numerous posts to beauty routines. The following is just such a post. I'm getting my hair cut tomorrow. That in and of itself isn't exactly blog worthy, but I'm going for a new style. Currently my hair is grown out (slightly past my shoulders at the longest layer) and in desperate need of a trim. I really like the bang look too, but I had to do some training of my hair before bangs would work. My hair now parts on the side of my head instead of right in the middle so I think we're ready!
Thanks to my dad, I've got some natural wave in my hair so I have a variety of ways to fix my hair. I usually go for the blow dry it straight look, but last week I wanted to sleep more than I wanted my hair to look good so I did a lot of letting it go natural and taming it with a headband. Take a look for yourself.
Oh, and yes Mama (and anyone else who has something to say about those eyebrows...another hairy gift from my dad) I'm getting a wax too.
Okay, here is the after picture...my new do!

So, what do y'all think?! I might be misleading you when I say "new" do as this is basically my same hairstyle just with bangs. But when a look works for you then you should stick with it right?! It's taking a little getting used to having something on your forehead when you haven't had something on your forehead in a while. But, overall I really like the cut. The only thing missing is the shaped eyebrows. Apparently the wax warmer got fried so it looks like me and the tweezers are going to get very friendly.

Just An Odd Ball
Today was appointment with the doctor about my ear. It's been chalked up to an ear infection, but something happened that was rather odd. My doctor has that pokey thing in my ear and she's looking around. Next I hear, "Mmmm. That is odd." Do you ever want to have a doctor who has some sort of instrument inside your body say that is odd?! After asking what exactly she meant by that she explained that I have a bulge on my ear drum. Apparently bulges aren't supposed to be on your ear drum. Anyway, I walked away with a prescription for some ear drops and strict instructions to come back in five days if I'm still having problems.
I stopped at Walgreens on my way home to get the ear drops, but I didn't stick around to wait. How come Walgreens is always so backed up?! It was going to be 45 minutes. I wasn't in a waiting mood so I guess the bulge will have to wait until tomorrow to begin the process of becoming un-odd. I had to pick up some supplies for a birthday party at work tomorrow so I was doing a quick cruise of the aisles (I said I wasn't into waiting...I was into shopping!) and I wound up on the Christmas aisle. Now I love Christmas...everything about Christmas actually. And I'm a wrapper. I like to wrap the presents (including matching paper, ribbon, and bows) and not just stick them in a sack. Well, all the nesting boxes, wrapping paper, bags, tissue, and ribbon was out. Also, the labels. I love the labels. I have several packages (more than gifts I'll actually give) that I bought on sale after last Christmas. I had to refrain from dropping a package or two in my basket.
Goodness...maybe I am an odd ball. I guess my ear drum is just following suit!

Cranky Baby
Here is a hodge podge of the week so far:
Fall Cleaning Project: Crap still in my living room, but the spare room is vacuumed, furniture arranged, bathroom scrubbed and smells fresh. I'm going to deviate from the plan and move all this crap back into the room but in sections so I can organize in there. I can't stand this crap in my living room!
Funny Kid Quotes: I'm beginning to wonder if these kids are as funny as my group last year. Maybe I just need to listen harder?!
Teacher: (whose back was turned to the board, writing) "Oh, who said evaporation?"
Student: "Uhh, no one Ms. Stewart. I think you're hearing things!"
Teacher: (who has some natural curl and when I'm in a rush I just spritz it with my curl vamp stuff and my hair has this total bed-head quality...the head band normally tames it a little, but it's the whole mess look)
Student: "Ms. Stewart did you forget to comb your hair today?"
Health Stuff: Last week I got some water in my ear during my shower. I tried to shake it out, but with little success. Anyway, now I hear like I have cotton in my ear. It's just been annoying, but not it is starting to hurt. I was one "cranky baby" this afternoon. I've got an appointment with my doctor on Thursday afternoon, but I'm willing to try shoving my key in my ear. Anything to pop that bubble!
My Co-Captain-ness: My friend Niners and I are co-captains for our school's Relay For Life team. Tonight was our first meeting and I have to admit that I'm a little overwhelmed by it all. Our theme this year is Monopoly. Each site will be a place on the board. We're not going for the popular ones (Boardwalk and Park Place) so we're looking for one with creative possibilities. Any ideas?!
Venting Update: After speaking to another teacher and my mom (who is my absolute calming center!) I realized that I might be over-reacting just a little and letting some personal issues cloud my judgement. Oh, the principal is still disorganized and horrible at communicating, but I'll give her that it might be because her plate is as full as mine is. Being swamped with meetings and paperwork is tough on all...the administrator and the teacher.
So, that about sums up the week so far. Normally the days go by fast, but I feel like this commercial I saw:
"I feel like I woke up this morning and thought it was Thursday, but it's only Wednesday."
"Dude, it's Tuesday."
So much to do, and so little time to get it all done in!

Saturday Project
Today has been the best kind of day! To begin with it is Saturday and that in and of itself is enough to make one happy. Also, I spent a very enjoyable morning in bed. I slept late, enjoyed some happy texting, got caught up on some tv I'd missed this week, and finished up a book. I only budged from my cozy place of sanctuary for those necessary bathroom and breakfast trips. Who knew a girl could waste half a day just being ridiculously lazy in bed?! Too, after the week I'd had I thought a little pampering in bed was just my due.
Once I did manage to wiggle out from the covers, I decided to take on a project. There is nothing like getting those batteries charged to make me productive. I'm taking on my spare bedroom. This was supposed to start out as my scrapbook and craft room. Right now it's just the catch all. Go ahead...take a peek for yourself.

I'm sort of embarrassed to post this on the internet...now all you people know my worst kept secret. I'm messy! Though to be honest, sometimes life just isn't worth it if there isn't a little mess involved. You're not buying that either huh? Well, that's my story.
Anyway, I thought if I took a picture of that disaster area and put it on my blog I'd feel compelled to get it in some semblance of order and then re-post showing off my new scrapbook haven. I have to admit that I'm not feeling very compelled at the moment but I'm sure that will come. Being the listy that I am (my term for my obsessive need to have lists in my life) I've made a list of the stages of organization.
1. Shame yourself into cleaning that room by posting horrible pictures on the internet....check
2. Move entire mess to living room and hope that you have no unexpected visitors for the next few weeks.....semi-check (I've got a lot left to haul into the living room)
3. Separate mess into smaller, but just as messy, piles of like mess
4. Organize (and by that I mean toss the stuff you don't want)
5. Put stuff I do want in cute containers and label
6. Arrange furniture pieces in spare bedroom to get the maximum amount of space out of that tiny room
7. Put newly organized and labeled stuff back in the room
8. Take pictures of your accomplishment and post on blog to redeem yourself from step 1
See...there is a method to my madness. Unfortunately, with my schedule I think my madness might take a week or two to get fully completed. I'm doing this all in the hopes that my desire to scrapbook will return. I know...my creativity has taken a vacation and finding her has been a challenge. To quote my friend Valerie...she's probably slutting around at someone else's house. Maybe she'll come home once she sees all the hard work I went to for her!
So, there you go. This is my current home project. Maybe I should have titled this SaturdayS (as in plural Saturdays) Project?!

A Much Needed Vent
I need to vent. I need to vent in the worst way, but I sort of feel like my vent is blocked.
I need to vent about work. I feel very unappreciated there. Oh, it's not by students, parents of students, or my team. Nope...it's my principal. There is a mini history there from last year, but who would be that petty to let that carry over? Oh who am I kidding?! I can certainly hold a grudge with the best of them. Anyway, I have a problem with the fact that I have to work so hard to communicate with her.
I don't need constant hand holding or never-ending praise, but when I feel like she doesn't respect or even like me as a person and just barely as a professional there is something wrong. Right?
Oh I don't know. Maybe I just need a long hot shower to wash away the mental stress of today. Apparently I suck at venting. I mean I want to really get on a roll, but frankly she just doesn't seem worth it. I just want my sensitive feelings to get the heck back in check. Plenty of people do appreciate me so who cares if the principal doesn't. Crap...I do.
Grrrrr!

Travel Buds
Quick birthday update: The actual day was great! Both my aunts sent presents too, so over all I raked in the goods. I got three complete sets of outfits (which can be interchanged so it's even more outfits actually), a great ring with different stones I can put in, a new hairdryer, Halloween scrapbooking kit, the scrapbook journaler's handbook, and a neat zipper pull that my mom made. Plus, I had a really great visiting with my parents. Thanks for all the birthday wishes everyone!
Now, about this travel buds business. As you probably know, or should be able to guess if you've been reading long, I love to travel. This year I broadened my horizons by getting a passport and going to Mexico on a cruise. Those horizons will expand even more next year when I travel to Jordan. One of my really good friends is going to Jordan for a year-long missionary trip and has invited me to come and visit. I'm already excited!
But, I've got a little problem in the meantime. What about all those mini vacation trips I want to take around the USA? I was thinking today that I'd love to visit Niagara Falls, Yellowstone, take a bed and breakfast tour of New England, go to Alaska. Can I go alone on a vacation?
I mean, I don't have to ask permission to take a trip, but I've never been totally alone on a trip before. I have to admit that the idea appeals to me. I'm a planner and usually want to do the touristy things the first time I visit a place. My last few fellow vacationers have been more fly-by-the-seat-of-her-pants type of travelers. I'm sure I made them nutty more than once! Plus, if I'm traveling alone, I'm not restricted by anyone else's budget or schedule.
Of course, being alone means I'm...well alone. What if I get lost (a distinct possibility given my map reading skills)? Who will take the pictures of me with all those sights?
The travel bug has me itching to plan a trip somewhere and to do something. But who to ask? Maybe I should take applications...up for travel? Apply below in the comments! Seriously, if you travel alone tell me about it. If you only travel with a bud tell me about that.
I'm ready to pack my bags and go....somewhere!

Fair On The Square Pretties
Sorry, to have just rushed away in that last post, but my parents had just driven up and I got excited! I hadn't seen them since July so I was ready. We're having a wonderful visit so far. Yesterday, we drove into Houston to see my cousin's new apartment and celebrate (though a little belated!) her birthday. I even baked her a spice cake (her favorite) for the occassion. Unfortunately, I didn't inherit my Mimi's cake decorating skills (or much else of her cooking skills) but Amanda assured me that the cake was yummy!
Today was the 33rd annual Fair on the Square in my little town. It always falls on the first weekend in October which is usually right around my birthday. It's basically a huge arts and crafts show set up around the courthouse. I love arts and crafts shows. How wonderfully thoughtful of Huntsville to decide to hold something I love right around my birthday!
My mom assures me that my birthday is the reason that they come and visit, but I know that she enjoys Fair on the Square as much as I do! Today turned out to be a good day for the whole event. It rained early this morning so it was sort of cool and there was a nice breeze. We got a great parking spot and while there were a lot of people it wasn't terribly crowded like last year. Most of the booths are the same year to year, but I found a few things I just couldn't live without!
If you couldn't tell I have a thing for apples! My kitchen is decorated in shades of lime, red, blue, and apples. I thought this oven hanging towel was so pretty. I especially love the little bushel of apples at the top. You can't tell from this picture but there is a lemon yogurt bread baking behind that pretty towel. (I'm experimenting and it smells delicious! How many wish you were on my Chirstmas baking list now?!)
I also found this sweet nativity. I have a thing for those too! Some people collect snowmen or Santas, but I love to collect nativities. I usually get two to three new ones each year. I found this one and thought it was an unique twist on the whole nativity scene. I love it!
The time goes so quickly when my parents are here, but we're trying to make the most of it. Tonight my dad and I are going to a college football game. That used to be our "daddy-daughter date night" thing when I was in high school. He'd take me to all the home games. These days I don't get to spend nearly enough time with him so this is a nice way to catch up. Tomorrow we might drive out by the lake...who knows...well after presents of course!
Thank you for all the wonderful birthday wishes! Sometmes I go over board (or as my mom says, "You just need to grow up!") with talking about and celebrating my birthday, but I can't help it. She who has the most birthdays lives the longest!

Happy Birthday To Me!
Usually I make a huge deal of my birthday because...well it's my birthday! All this week I've been counting down the days. Well, today is officially two days from my birthday. It's on Sunday, but the partying begins now!
My parents are on their way to visit. I'm truly excited about this because I haven't seen them since July. For an only child who is close to both parents that is a long stretch. And speaking of long stretches...they just pulled up!
Details after the weekend.
Happy birthday to me!!!

Thumbs Up
I figured everyone was tired of reading about my itches (which thanks for all the well wishes - relief is slow in coming but it is coming!), but today was a pretty low key day. Nothing really to write about...nothing really inspiring.
So, what is a girl to do when she needs a new post? Get a questionnaire thingy from www.blogthings.com of course! I had this real scientific way of choosing which one. I simply scrolled down and just clicked.
| You Are the Thumb |
You're unique and flexible. And you defy any category. Mentally strong and agile, you do things your own way. And you do them well. You are a natural leader... but also truly a loner. You inspire many but connect with few. You get along well with: The Middle Finger Stay away from: The Pinky |

Week Of The Itch
I itch!
At first, I thought I was just feeling sympathy for my mom (who spent several hours in the ER this weekend due to an allergic reaction) or maybe my friend Lindsey who has suffered from poison ivy. Now, I'm not so sure.
I have several bug bites on my foot and ankle. I'm pretty sure I'm a magnet for things that creep and crawl and bite. Saturday night I was locked out of my house (long story about a cheap landlady and a door that swells and locks me out) and I had to wait for the landlady to bring her extra key to me. Five minutes on my porch and I was eaten alive. Thank goodness for Benadryl itch gel.
And then there is the other itch. (Sorry guys...probably want to turn back now.) The itch that involves a blunt tipped syringe, waddling like a pinguin to bed, and lying still for about 20 minutes. Ladies you know what I mean. My friend Gela suggested I get in touch with my inner dude and scratch in the privacy under my desk. I refrained...just barely. That was probably too much information...sorry.
Now, if you'll excuse me I have some creams to apply.

Where In The World
Just recently, I added a counter to the bottom of my blog. I'd seen this counter on other blogs and it was pretty neat. It told me the cities that I'd had visitors from on a daily basis. I average about 20 visitors a day and it was interesting to see where those visitors were coming from. Some I knew who they were but others were a mystery. I even had some hits from other countries!
Anyway, I have to admit I'd become a little addicted to seeing the cities and trying to guess who might have stopped by and left a comment. It was a fun little game. Unfortunately I wasn't too great at it. It all kind of makes me wonder who these people are that stop by. I love getting comments and "meeting" new people so to speak through my blog. I wanted to just shout out for those people from other countries or other cities to leave a little hi in the comment box!
Well, I had the counter set up by city and now it's gone freaky and started just listing the countries. It's pretty weird how the thing just changed itself. Well, I deleted it, went back to the Neocounter site and re-selected the daily cities counter. I put it on my blog and low and behold the stupid countries one popped up again. I did this whole routine of deleting and making a new one twice now and I'm at the frustration point. That comes so quickly when I don't understand what I'm doing.
So, if you're a Neocounter expert and can help me please do so. Otherwise, I'm just going back to being blissfully unaware of who stops by here. And if you're a lurker, feel free to say hi in the comments. I won't bite...promise!
**Post Script: I think I may have figured it out! I think I had just signed up for a free trial so I went back and paid the relatively low fee for a year's worth of looking at who stops by and viola...my old counter is back! This seems like a fix, but given my experience with technology this could be a band-aid that is already losing it's sticky grip. We shall see! **

They Don't Get Much Better
Today was good on a lot of levels.
It was Friday.
It was payday (and my step raise kicked in...not much but more than I was getting!).
It was mac and cheese day in the cafeteria (you know the really cheesy clog you up for a week cheesy kind).
There were also veggie sticks in the cafeteria.
My lesson plans are in and I'm 93% ready for Monday morning.
I had a very enjoyable dinner out tonight.
And today's goodness is running over into tomorrow.
It will be Saturday.
I will get to sleep late.
The only chore on my plate is laundry (let's face it...it never goes off my plate!).
I'm going shopping (okay so it's only grocery shopping but shopping is shopping!).
So, like I said...the days don't get much better than this!

Laughter Is Good For The Soul
I'm one of the lucky ones. The easily amused lucky ones I mean. During a really horrible year in college (I had the roomie from hell) I had basically forgotten to take some time and laugh. My mom reminded me that I've always been a happy person and sometimes you've just got to laugh to keep from going insane (or to prison for killing aforementioned roomie). She told me that as a baby/toddler she'd hear me in the other room just laughing and entertaining myself. I think those moments were pretty precious to her. So, apparently it started young. Yep, I often crack myself up and find humor in the most absurd things.
For example, I have certain words that just tickle my funny bone. Wiener (and not for any dirty reason) is one of them. I remember being in Houston on a Girl Scout trip one year and seeing a department store called Wieners. What an odd name for a department store don't you think? It was probably a men's store... Anyway, that word just stuck. I have a couple of friends that will toss it into the conversation just to get me going and I'm ashamed to admit that it works pretty well.
Another word is Twinkies. This one is sorta steeped in a dirty history (which to my mom's probable delight I'll skip sharing) but that word just makes me giggle. It could have been the context in which it was used but I'll never say the word the same again. I'm giggling now and I'm just typing it! Good grief.
Well, yesterday I got to add another word to the list. Waft. I know...seems like a harmless word. It all started before our Open House (like meet the teacher sorta) at school and one of the other teachers asked me to sniff her to see if she smelled like Subway. I (apparently not so subtly) leaned in and sniffed. I didn't smell anything sandwhichy. But just to be sure I gently fanned my paper in my hand to waft any scent over to my nose. (Yes, this is how tired teachers spend the night...sniffing each other.) Anyway, she asked what I was doing and I told her I was seeing if any scent wafted over.
Apparently, she'd never heard the term waft and wanted to know if I'd gotten confused and meant queefed. I quickly assured her that I wasn't the one confused! Well, that started a whole waft conversation and ended up with her telling another teacher to "Waft this!". I'm sure something is completely lost in translation but the scene was pretty funny. Well, today everything was waft this or waft that. And I spent a good portion of the day giggling to myself.
Words aren't the only thing that amuse me, but I think I should wrap this up. I would imagine many are thinking I'm something of a nut and well...maybe you're right. But I'm a happy nut!

Lock Down
Our school went into lock down today. That basically means that you need to stay in your classroom and lock your doors. You also need to know where your kids are at all times. The whole lock down happened because a prisoner escaped from a local prison, killed a prison guard, took a hostage, and was considered armed and dangerous. I suppose this situation is bound to happen what with living in a town known for it's prison system. The whole situation was resolved by late this afternoon, but not without the death of at least one person and several people probably traumatized. Thankfully, the kids were blissfully unaware of what was happening outside of the school walls.
The world we live in is a scary one. In college, the professors don't teach you what to do when the angry student confronts you with a gun or what to do with the verbally abusive parent who thinks you can do no right in regards to his child. How to comfort the child that had no food last night and no one to tuck her in isn't a class you'll find in any course catalog. The strength and courage to put yourself on the line for a child that isn't yours is something that you must already have inside when you decide to become a teacher.
Even though I knew we were relatively safe inside our classroom and our day continued without upset, I couldn't help but think about what we'd do if for some reason we weren't completely safe. And I knew that I'd do whatever I could do to protect those sixteen babies in my classroom. One of my boys asked me later in the afternoon why we went into lock down. I told him that sometimes it is important to practice ways that teachers keep students safe. He replied with, "You'd keep me safe?" What else could I say? "Of course I'd do anything I could to keep you safe." Whatever that anything might be, I know that something inside of me would would allow me to do it without a second thought or a moment's hesitation. And that is kind of scary too.

Religious Field Trips
Don't fret...this isn't a religious "I'm-going-to-convert-you" type of post.
Having grown up in the middle of the Bible belt, my faith and love of God has always played a major role in my life. Thankfully, I was blessed with parents that taught me the importance of God and took me to church and actively lived their faith as an example for me. Regardless of what your faith is, I'm sure you can agree that having parents that practice what the preach is always an asset. Anyway, while my parents took me to church and lived Christian lives in front of me they didn't raise a religious nut either.
Please don't misunderstand, my faith is strong and important to me. I believe Jesus Christ was the Son of God, was born of a virgin, and died and was resurrected to save me from eternity in Hell, but I also don't try to push that on to other people. Christians have gotten a bad rap for being a bunch of religious nuts who are judgemental and hypocritical. And some are, but most of us aren't.
Anyway, religion as a whole has become a fasination for me over the last several years. Some people might see that as my faith is wavering, but I assure you that it isn't. I know this interest began when I met my friend Becky. She was raised Catholic (and I hope she doesn't mind me saying that on here) and I was raised Baptist. When we were roommates in college she would sometimes take me to Mass with her on Saturday night and she'd occassionally come to Sunday school and service with me on Sunday morning. She never pushed her religion onto me and hopefully she feels the same way about me. It was neat to get to see and experience something totally different from the way I was raised. And she was always patient with all my questions about her faith. I'm curious by nature so I asked everything and anything. I really enjoyed picking her brain about the Catholic faith.
Here lately, I have another friend that allows me to indulge that curiousity in regards to the Jewish faith. Sometimes I worry that I'm offensive in my lack of knowledge of the faith, but he's always patient with helping me understand certain traditions. I honestly find it fasinating! Anyway, something was said today (and now I can't even remember what it was) but I discovered that one of our new teachers is Jewish too. She was impressed I knew that today was Yom Kippur. I really should have said it was because it was written on my calendar but nonetheless she was impressed. Of course I didn't know what it meant (evidenced in the fact that I wished her a Happy Yom Kippur to which she replied that it's not exactly a happy holiday) but she appreciated it all the same. Hey sometimes it really is the thought that counts! She's not a religous nut either (her words) because she's rather relaxed on certain things in her faith.
I mentioned to her my enjoyment of learning about other faiths and she said I'd have to come with her to a service sometime. That's when I told her about how Becky and I would visit each other's church. She loved the idea of a religious field trip to explore another faith. We spent about twenty minutes talking about the differences in our faiths and comparing notes on the parts that were similar. She even jokingly gave me homework (find out three facts and bring her an article of Jewish clothing...silly girl!) but I think I'm going to take her up on the offer to visit her church. I mean synagogue. Anyway, I think it'll be neat to go and add this to my religous experiences.
Now, I feel like I should add that while I do enjoy learning about other faiths this only strengthens my own faith. I feel that I bring an open mind to the table (though not so open my brains might fall out) and can experience it without worry that I'm converting or losing my own faith along the way. I still feel strongly that my faith is right and true, but it never hurts to say that you've got some knowledge about other religions under your belt. And that is how I look at it...learning about something new while not forgetting what is most important at the center of my life and faith.
I think that makes me a well-rounded person right?!

Use Kind Words
At our school we model and encourage everyone to be friends. More importantly we use the term friend instead of classmate. For example, I remind the kids daily that we have to walk quietly in the hall because we don't want to disturb our other friends in another class. It really helps build that sense of community and friendship. Lately, I've been having to remind my students daily to use nice kind words with their friends. And that is a little troubling.
Then I realized that lately I'm having to remember to use kind words with a friend of mine. And that's even more troubling.
Remember when everyone was your friend and your world basically crashed when the hurtful words "I'm not gonna be your friend anymore!" were tossed out? I've been on both sides (though mostly in my younger days) and I think it hurts all the way around. With my kids, I can remind them that it hurts when we hear that (even if we don't really mean it) and that we need to treat people the way we would want to be treated. As grown-ups it's a little more complicated.
What do you do when you treat someone (insert friend's name here) the way you'd like to be treated and his/her response is nothing? I really think it's a fine line between getting one's panties in a wad over nothing and truly having the right to be upset. And right now I'm not sure which side of the line I'm on. That is a frustrating place to be.
This isn't something I'm proud to admit and it's cost me a few friendships through the years but I'm the type that would rather shut down and walk away rather than confront someone about how they feel about a friendship with me. I remember this one friend, Trisha, in middle school. (I know...middle school...we're so mature about things at that age but just go with it.) She was really nice and friendly to me and others in our circle and then suddenly she just stopped talking to me. She'd say hi in the hallway, but that was it. I didn't have the courage to flat out ask if I'd done something or if she didn't want to be my friend anymore. I didn't want to hear the answer if it was yes. So, I stopped talking to her and the friendship simply faded. I still don't know if it was because I'd done something or not...I never did ask.
Unfortunately, I'm still that way in friendships and now that I'm older relationships. I'd rather break ties first than be the one left. And instead of having a huge blow up I simply keep silent and back away. That sounds pretty pathetic huh?
Anyway, I don't know if this post was just a ramble or if I have a point I'm trying to make. I just know that I have a friend (at least that is how I think of our relationship) and I'm kind of tired of trying to reach out to come back with nothing. I don't like not knowing where I stand. I don't like not having control over this situation.
I miss my friend.

A Right Trial In The Kitchen Department
Remember a few weeks ago, my gracious neighbor put my new battery on my car in exchange for a batch of oatmeal raisin cookies? In theory that seemed so reasonable and easy to do. In actuality, well it was my usual kitchen disaster. Okay, perhaps the word disaster isn't quite right since the ultimate result was pretty sweet.
Saturday I picked out a recipe (www.foodtv.com was a huge help since oatmeal raisin cookies aren't in my recipe box) and checked to see what ingredients I'd need to buy. Yes, I picked the recipe that had the least ingredients...is that wrong? Anyway, after a quick trip to the local grocery store I had my oats and raisins and I was ready to go.
Along time ago, my mom taught me that you double check all ingredients and equipment before you start mixing to make sure that you have everything. Well, all I can say is thank goodness I checked. And that's when I discovered that I had the hand held part of the mixer but the beaters were mysteriously missing. How the heck am I supposed to cream the sugar and butter without the beaters?! This was almost enough to make me scrap the whole idea of cookies.
I didn't think I could put off this any longer...I mean I've been driving that car for several days and I figured he'd need some cookies soon too. So, I grabbed a whisk and decided I could cream anything if I beat it long enough. Off I started on those cookies. I was doing great until I came to the flour part of the recipe. I opened the canister and dipped in my measuring cup and came out with flour and some tiny moving things. What the heck? I'm not great in the kitchen but I'm pretty sure flour isn't enriched with bugs. I quickly dumped the whole canister of flour and took the trash out. Thankfully I had a bug free new bag of flour in the pantry.
At this point I was beginning to wonder if perhaps cookies were such a smart idea. No beaters and unexpected bugs (which my mom later clarified as weevils). But when you've got a bowl full of cinnamony oatmeal cookie batter you've got to follow through. I put in the first batch and prayed that they came out okay. Amazingly, the first batch came out and smelled pretty good. I let them cool and then gave them a taste test. They weren't bad so I kept baking.
Four batches later I had several dozen cookies cooled and ready to be delivered. I haven't heard anything back from him about the cookies but I didn't hear any ambulance sirens in the night either. I guess I shouldn't go on and on about what a bad cook I am (I mean I can cook) but it usually comes with some amusing story or the smoke alarm going off.
Now if you'll excuse me there is an oatmeal raisin cookie calling my name!

Ugh....
...it's that day of the week. Chore day. Ick, that leaves a bad taste in my mouth and I'm just typing it! Apparently sometime this week when my back was turned my closet barfed on my bedroom floor. The dishes got together, decided to get themselves dirty, and then passed out in the sink. And the towels in the bathroom...well those lazy things can't be bothered to get on a rack. So, I've got to go around and clean up their messes.
Ungrateful household items...

Seriously...More About Me
I'm beginning to wonder if I have a problem. I mean I love to talk about me and share little bits of useless information about myself with anyone who happens to stop by this piece of the world wide web. I think I might have....vain-ness (I love inventing words!).
Anyway, while I'm waiting for the Rx to kick in here are 35 more things to know about me.
1. Where is your mobile phone? Currently it's in my purse, but I'll take it out in a few minutes because it's Big Brother night and my friend D and I always watch together via text.
2. Relationship? Hmm...with what? Single at the moment but there is that inappropriate crush that gets more crushy each day. Don't you hate when that happens?!
3. Your hair? Brown (seriously I wish I had hair like they describe in romance books...silky light brown milk chocolate locks)and currently in need of a trim.
4. Work? I teach...and usually a lot more than just what the TEKS say I should.
5. Your sister(s)? I'm an only child.
6. Your favorite thing? That's probably like picking your favorite child and you had ten of them. I have a lot of favorites...ice cream: mocha almond, hobby: scrapbooking, place: home...more specifically the bed in my home, thing to do on a rainy day: read
7. Your dream last night? I dreamed I had three flat tires but the tires weren't just flat but sort of like they liquefied on the pavement.
8. Your favorite drink? A&W Cream Soda and anything fruity with vodka if we're talking about alcohol.
9. Your dream car? Hmm...I'm not sure. I like the look of the Dodge Durango (but that is a dream because I'd have to sell my liver on the black market to pay for the gas).
10. The room you’re in? living room
11. Your shoes? kicked off right by the door. I have a little pile that I move each weekend, but I really should just buy a shoe organizer for the front door since that's where they always get left!
12. Your fears? being left...anywhere
13. What do you want to be in 10 years? A wife and mom staying at home
14. Who did you hang out with this weekend? Great friends from college...we went to Schlitterbahn for a wet and wild weekend!
15. What are you not good at? Remembering to change the oil in my car, drawing, keeping my facial expressions neutral when I'm feeling something.
16. Muffin? I'm not sure what this question is asking me so I'll go with the safe answer and say I like them.
17. Wish list items? A house with a scrapbook room and a spare bedroom, a new car
18. Where you grew up? On the edge of West Texas also known as Abilene
20. What are you wearing? Oh geez...how embarrassing...a tank top and panties.
21. What are you not wearing? bottoms
22. Your pet? I don't have one but I left at home a dog named Sophie and a cat named Dex. Jake is my mom's baby and completely ignores me.

24. Your life? Really good most days!
25. Your mood? Happy and well just a tad bit guilty
26. Missing? My parents and a sock that the dryer ate.
27. What are you thinking about? That inappropriate crush, the itch on the bottom of my foot and how my mom couldn't find Everyone Loves Raymond funny?!
28. Your car? Ford Escort.
29. Your kitchen? At the moment a complete disaster. What?...you've never been too lazy to do the dishes?!
30. Your summer? Absolutely wonderful!!
31. Your favorite color? purple
32. Last time you laughed? Just a sec ago at something Ray said on Everyone Loves Raymond. I laugh a lot...I'm so easily amused!
33. Last time you cried? Sunday. I was driving home and I heard the Allen Jackson song "Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning" and it made me just remember that day and how I was worried about my mom. And then I thought about what I'd do if I lost my mom and well...that always makes me cry.
34. School? Every day!
35. Love? God. Family. Carbs. Travel. Friends. Scrapbooking. Raunchy romance novels. My bed. Commercials. Being a girly girl. And so much more....

One Tuesday Morning
It's hard to believe that it has been six years since the attack at the World Trade Center. Just this morning, I mentioned that fact to another teacher as I was writing the date on my white board. We both took a moment to remember and reflect about the effects of that day and then we had to get on with today. I know that sounds callus. And I'm sure there are many people that are still struggling to get on with today because they are mired down in the hurt and pain from that Tuesday morning six years ago.
I suppose that 9/11 was my generation's "you'll always remember where you were" event. I know that I won't ever forget. Despite it being a national tragedy, I was in the middle of my own personal crisis that day. My mom was in the hospital recovering from surgery that we weren't sure she'd pull through. My whole world had shrunk to me and how fast could I get back to the hospital to be with my mom. (I was in college and had classes each day...2 hours away.)
I remember waking up that morning (later than my friend Becky...my roomie at the time) and hearing something on the radio about an airplane accident in New York. Y'all know I don't watch much news (and I watched even less then) but I did turn on the T.V. and Becky and I were horrified to discover that it was a deliberate attack. Still not even sure what to think or feel we went on over to the dining hall for breakfast. Every T.V. in the room was tuned to some news station. I remember feeling like this was so unreal. I went on to class only to have our professor tell us to go home and watch the news...we were seeing history in the making. And that is exactly what we did...went home and watched the news.
Everyone has their own memories and thoughts about that day, but I think the important thing is that we remember.

So Long Summer
I think summer has officially come to an end for me. This weekend was the last hurrah of the summer. It was the annual Schlitterbahn trip. I had a ton of fun, got a little sun (despite my best efforts to avoid it!), and think it was the perfect way to cap off a wonderful summer.
One would think I'd be water logged from all the places I've been this summer and one would be correct! From beaches to water parks, I've had plenty of sun and water to last me till next summer. After I wash the swimsuits they will be heading for a long sabbatical in the dresser drawer.
I know fall is usually a time for slowing down and getting back into a routine, but it's one of my favorite times of year! I've already got a beautiful fall wreath hanging on the door and it makes me smile every time I come home. There are so many exciting things that happen between now and the end of the year. I can't wait! For instance, my birthday (which is quickly approaching...three weeks actually!), football games, Thanksgiving, Christmas shopping, holiday parties and get-togethers, wrapping...can you tell I really love this time of year?!
So, with so much waiting to begin it's time to say goodbye to summer. I had fun with you, but as with all good things it must come to an end. Thanks for the memories and I can't wait to see what you bring next year!

It's A Guy Thing...Right?!
Let me begin by saying that I mean no offense to those girls that kill their own bugs, know a spark plug from a sparkler, and remain completely calm in the face of minor home repair. Let me also say that I'm not that kind of girl! So, I truly admire you chicks.
Yesterday was a little bit of a no bueno day...starting with the fact that my car wouldn't start. Sitting in the car listening to the sound of nothing as I turned the ignition I immediately wished for a man...any man. A man seems to make those bug, sparking, and home repair situations so much more easier to deal with. Anyway, the battery was dead. Unfortunately not horror movie dead but really dead. Thanks to a sympathetic co-worker I made it to work on time and safely home with a new battery.
And even more importantly, the guy next door was willing to switch them out for me for the small price of a batch of oatmeal raisin cookies (I think I'll leave out the part about my cooking skills!). But, he did mention that I should replace the battery terminals. More specifically the hot end of the terminal.
Are you picturing how blank my face looked?!
Well, anyway I took myself down to the local Auto Zone after work and felt like I was entering some sacred man place. I must have had some awed expression on my face because the sales guy just smiled and asked if he could help. I told him that I needed the hot end of a battery terminal. Then he started to ask about the number of connectors and he lost me. I simply handed him my sassy girl sticky note and said this was all I knew. Hopefully I've gotten the right part.
So, my question (any guy feel free to answer!) is does car knowledge come along for the ride with that Y chromosome? I mean do guys "just know" or does someone teach them? Whatever it is I sure am glad guys have it and that they are willing to take some pity on girls that don't!

In The Hot Seat
I volunteered to be "interviewed" by a fellow reader and posted below is a sampling of questions. They range from the nice to the naughty and everywhere in between. I think these things are fun and interesting because these type of questions usually dig a little deeper into the interviewee and make the interviewer think a little past what-is-your-favorite-color type questions. Enjoy getting to know a little bit more about me (probably some things that wouldn't normally just come out in a post!) and if you'd like to take a turn in the hot seat let me know!
What is your favorite soup?
My favorite homemade soup is my mom's Southwestern Soup. I bet everyone has a recipe for something "kind of like that" but I think my mom's is the absolute best! It's thick and hearty and perfect for cold days. It's also very easy to make and practically fool proof (which sometimes I need!)
And because I'm a nice kind of gal I'll even share the recipe!
1 lb. ground beef
1 pkg. dry ranch dressing mix
2 med. onions
2 cans ranch style beans
2 black beans
2 cans whole corn (with the liquid)
1 can hominy
1 large can diced tomatoes (with the liquid)
1 can mild (or spicy depending on your taste) Rotel
1 lb. Velveeta cheese
In a large (and I mean LARGE) soup pot brown the ground beef and onions together. Drain away any unwanted grease. Add the ranch dressing mix and stir together. Add all of the remaining ingredients (except the cheese) and bring to a boil. Slowly add the cubes of Velveeta cheese and stir until melted. It's the dump and heat method...very easy and very good!
And when I feel lazy my favorite soup is Campbell's Select Italian Sausage with Pasta and Pepperoni.
If you were going to buy underwear for a man, what would you get?
This is kind of tricky to answer as I don't really buy underwear for guys. I guess I would say that I'd probably buy briefs in colors. And perhaps one or two pair of goofy boxers (the kind with cartoons or inappropriate crotch jokes on them) just to add some variety to the mix.
Have you ever stolen anything on purpose?
Yes, I stole a hot glue gun stick from Michael's Craft Store when I was about 6 or 7. My dad found out I'd taken it and made me return it to the store and apologize. Also in college I one time changed the price sticker on a book at Wal-Mart so I didn't have to pay full price. That was a moment of weakness and being broke. I haven't stolen anything else.
Does anyone have naked pictures of you?
Yes. (I think the interviewer was referring to those embarrassing naked-baby-in-the-sink type pictures all parents have...right?!)
What one thought turns you on more than anything else?
Being with a guy that is totally turned on by the good girl in me and the girl that wants to do the unexpected and break all kinds of rules and taboos. Oh, and that guy should have a great mouth! You can tell a lot about a guy by the way he kisses and uses his tongue. ;)
There you go...more about me. Now, who wants to go next?!

I Want To Be Loved Like That
My friend Becky reminded me of a movie that I haven't seen...well probably since I last saw it with her. Anyway, she has always had good taste in movies and when she mentioned it the other day I had to go out and buy it. Last night I watched The Mirror Has Two Faces and I enjoyed it a lot. It's a great movie for the girls who feel they aren't the prettiest or size-twoest in the world. I think my absolute favorite line was from Greg when he said "I don't care if you are pretty, I love you anyway!"
Girls, don't you just want to be loved like that?!
