Yep, got word yesterday that the body shop is recommending that the car be totaled. So, now I wait for the insurance to see what exactly they will give me and then I go and buy a car.

I, myself, have never bought a car but I have always heard from both my parents and Matt's that you never buy the car the same day you are looking. You sleep on the idea and the decision for at least a day. Also with the way the economy is, get the car with absolute BEST gas mileage in your price range!! Let me know what the insurance says and what you decide....
Good luck! Ask your friends if they have had any good car buying experience and go to that salesman? I have a friend whose hubs is a car dealer and always use him. I don't know what your budget is - but the best, most reliable car I ever owned was a Nissan Sentra. And they have come a long way since I had one. They are really nice now! :-)
OH fun to get a new car, but ugh on the buying process. Im such a wimp that I let Den do the whole thing on his own. He likes that sort of thing, where I have a hard time playing the game. I hate being lied to...lol!!
We JUST bought a used Ford ZX2; its like an escort. Its a standard and we love it. It gets about 31 mpg and it is very peppy. They aren't very expensive and so our payments are really low.
Let us know what you get and ohhhhh I would recommend praying about the deal and the car. We ALWAYS do, and we have been very blessed with great cars.
Read online reviews. A lot of car dealerships are written about on online sites. If you have a particular dealer that you're thinking about using google and see what happens.
If just one person has a bad experience with a dealer I tend to think that could just be a fluke. However, if I see several negative reviews over several months I think there is a lesson to be learned. Good luck!

I think Texas folks may be honester than average. Certainly I was pleased with the vehicle I bought there and found them friendly, fair and honest.
Separate car price from financing; this is crucial. Apparently many car dealers are reluctant to reveal the true cost of a car to the buyer (which can be 50% more than the actual car value due to high interest financing).
Not too manycomments have advised on what kind of car to get (I did see a Sentra mentioned, nice) so I'm almost reluctant to say, don't want to start a brand war!
I will say this, I LOVE my Kia. Granted, I got the Sedona (minivan) and I doubt that's what you're looking for, BUT, when shopping around, we had it narrowed to the Kia Sedona and the Dodge Grand Caravan, and when push came to shove, it WAS price that decided it. The Kia was almost 10K cheaper. It's gas mileage was comprable to the Dodge, but it was a bit smaller, cabin-size... that turned out to be not a big deal to us.
I've babbled alot, so all I will say is check out the Kia Spectra, and their other small cars, they can be a great money saver, and they are damn good vehicles!
