Good To Be Home

Oh, it's good to be back home. I had a great time with my family, though sadly the convention was slightly lacking. Anyway, like I said, being with my family was wonderful! I completed 12 layouts (most really great and two that I thought were just okay) and I have pictures but it will have to wait a while until my digital camera is once again connected to the cord thingy and my computer (please don't get weighed down by my use of technical terms!). To sum up everything...I shot my creative wad somewhere about Friday night. I'm going to get back in my groove, but until that happens (never fear I'm sure it'll be very soon) I've left you with one of those questionnaire thingys I like so much!

You Are Sunshine

Soothing and calm
You are often held up by others as the ideal
But too much of you, and they'll get burned

You are best known for: your warmth

Your dominant state: connecting

While You Wait

Load the car...check

Make the bed...check

Take the last minute trash out...check

The only thing left is to turn the air up and then go to my hair appointment before I head out of town. I'm really excited! The only downer thing is that I won't have access to a computer (it's freaky how I've grown addicted to it!) so I won't be able to update my blog or make the rounds to visit you lovely people. Awww, I know.

Anyway, I've made a little list of links to some of my favorite posts. Feel free to click around and enjoy the read!

The New York Experience - this is a recap of my last big trip. I went to New York City with a good friend. We had so much fun...as you'll read.

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Part 5
Part 6
Part 7

The Joy of Ordinary Days

Dex: The Fat Kitty (though his wobbly parts aren't really seen in this post)

A Questionaire Thingy

I think that's probably enough. And if you've read all of those you need to get up and take a break! Take care blogging friends!

I Need To See Your Passport Please

Just let me start this post by saying there are about a hundred other things I should be doing at the moment...namely packing. See, I'm leaving tomorrow (because I'm leaving for the summer and blah blah blah...) and I haven't packed a single thing. I have made a list (you know because I think lists are almost divine) of things to pack but as of right now not a single thing is in a suitcase. As a matter of fact the suitcase is still in the closet. Do you think there are support groups for people like me? Hello, my name is Steffany and I'm a procrastinator.

And speaking of procrastinating, I've been planning the upcoming cruise since November. You'd think someone who liked to make lists and make sure everything was planned down to the last minute would have had her passport in her hands months ago. And...you'd be wrong. I've been meaning to, but I haven't. I've checked with the cruise line and while it's not required that I have one it wouldn't hurt either. So I'm getting one. And paying for my procrastination to the tune of $60 to rush it...whatever rush means to the US Government.

Yesterday I went to get my passport picture taken. I'm going to stop right here and just say that a passport picture is like all other pictures needed for documents...they suck. It's not a horrible picture mind you, but I'd never want to willingly show it off. Anyway, not thinking about the dimensions of said picture yesterday I wore a super cute black off the shoulder top. I walked into Walgreens and asked to have a passport picture made. The lady told me where to stand and said okay on three. She said three and I smiled. Since it was only going to take five minutes or so I decided to wander around the store. I found myself in the greeting card aisle (surprise surprise) and up comes the lady with a goofy grin on her face. She told me that she'd like me to see the picture because it looked like I was naked. Yes, she said "It looks like you're naked!" very loudly in a semi crowded Walgreens. We walk back to the photo lab (the whole time with her repeating how funny it is because I look naked) to the screen where I'm 2" x 2" and yes I look very...unclothed in the picture. She's still going on about how I looked naked (still very loudly) and I quickly asked her if we could re-take the picture.

She took me back over to the background and we tried it again. I literally had to hold the sleeves up on my shoulders and when she said three let them go and smile. It's amazing that my hands actually weren't in the picture and I did have a smile...well one of those fake ones. This time I hung around the lab counter so if I still looked naked she couldn't yell it as far. Thankfully, this one came out much more...decent. So now I have the required pictures minus a little bit of my dignity.

The moral of this story...when you book a trip out of the country in November get your passport pictures taken in November. You'll most likely be wearing long sleeves and you'll dodge the "you're naked" bullet in a crowded store. See...I might not have my clothes packed, but I've just performed a huge public service!

Look Out Summer!

Yesterday was officially the last day of the 2006-2007 school year. Summer school is being held on our campus this year so I've got to square away my room (there is this rumor that summer school teachers have sticky fingers) a little more on Monday, but essentially today was the first day of summer!

I know people are probably sick of hearing about what I'm doing this summer, but I'm excited about it all. And now to add to the mix...a week long trip to the beach with some girls from work in August! Some song with the words "beach baby beach baby...and that's as far as I get" keeps playing in my head. I think this is first summer in a long time where I'll spend so much time around sand.

Everything kicks off on Tuesday when I leave for Arlington. I'm going a scrapbook convention with all the ladies in my family! I can't wait. Scrapbooking is my absolute favorite hobby and I love spending time with my family. (By the way, if you click on each of those words you'll get to see an example of my scrapbooking talents!) Then it's on to my parents' home for some much needed catch up time.

A friend today was saying how it must be nice to have those long summer vacations. Yeah...I agree!

My Strange Addiction

I have a pretty strange addiction. Well, actually I have a lot of strange addictions. Some are to places, some are to people, but one of the strangest is my addiction to all things gummy. I'm not sure when this started, but it's pretty hard for me to pass up something gummy. I remember thinking those Troll gummy pizzas were just the best type of candy. Anyway, I'm sure my addiction is rooted deep in my childhood, but I'd never seen anything like this before.

I found it at Garden Ridge when I went the other day. It's gummy tacos! People...gummy tacos. I know you're trying really hard to resist the urge to leave your house and find your nearest Garden Ridge, but try to make it all the way through this post. On the back of the box it even has "recipes" you can make from the gummy treats! You can make quesadillas, a mini taco pizza, or a veggie taco. I think Taco Bell should get a hold of this idea...pronto.

Anyway, through the course of the night I enjoyed my four little tacos. See, just another little thing about me you probably didn't know and now are wondering where to file this little gem. I love gummy candies!

Now get out there and try something gummy.

Night Owl

Today, or rather yesterday, was the last day of school! I simply can't believe how fast time has flown. It really doesn't seem possible that the end is here. This has been a great year. There have been some downs, but so many ups too! One of my co-workers said that we're no longer "firsties" and I hadn't stopped to think about it in those terms. But, yeah the first year is done. Well, not totally because next week is teacher work days where I'll wrap up my classroom and get it settled for the summer. It was a great year and I'm completely happy to wrap it up and set it on the shelf of experience!

Now, as to this night owl business. I gave this post that title because it's the middle of the night...literally. It is 1:07 in the A.M! As some of you might know...this is very atypical for me to be up and moving around this late...or early.

Yesterday, school let out early so I was home several hours earlier than normal. I did some laundry, cleaned a little on my house, and had a snack. Then around 6pm I went to lay down for a little nap. I'm a fan of naps. They don't usually leave me groggy, but can actually improve my mood and make me more productive. See...posting at 1am...productive!

Yes, I slept until 12:45am when a call from a friend woke me up. He asked if I was sleeping and it took me a minute to realize where I was and what time it was. I'd been asleep since 6pm! That's practically a full night's sleep. I chatted with him for a few minutes and then sat up in bed. It was one of those times where you feel you should lay back down because hello...it's dark outside and it's the middle of the night, but...I had pretty much woken up. So, I went to the bathroom and here I am.

I suppose this past week has just caught up with me. I had something every single night plus just the stress of hurrying around to get things completed with the end of school and all. (Short side note: School was officially supposed to end next Wednesday, but a waiver from TEA...Texas Education Agency...allowed us to call Friday the last day of school. Every thing got pushed up along with all the end of the year paperwork and such. So, besides the social things I was going to I had this on my mind. Like I said...busy!) So, it makes sense that the week would catch up with me at some point. I just didn't think it would happen so quickly!

So, what do night owls do in the middle of the night? I'm not one so this is all new to me. I am a little hungry since I missed supper earlier. I think I'm going to try eating a bite and then I'm getting back in bed. I'll pop in a movie and see if that helps put me back to sleep. If not, I'll be back to see what you night owls suggest because I know some of you are up and at your best right now!

Ohmygoodness...I just thought of something. I'll probably be wide awake (still) and ready to start the day tomorrow bright and early. Darn. I was looking forward to getting to sleep late on Saturday morning. I may just lay in bed until 9am or so in protest! Oh jeez. I'm like a baby with my days and nights all mixed up!

Three Days Left

It's a long story, but the end-of-school date was pushed forward by three days so it's been a scramble to keep my head above water these days. Anyway, my friend Chrissy sent me this hilarious e-mail that spoke to my educator self. There are so many of these that apply to me so I've made little notes. Enjoy!

YOU might be a school employee if....

...you believe the playground should be equipped with Ritalin salt lick

...you want to slap the next person who says, "Must be nice to work 8 to 3:30 and have summers off (OMG YES. If you added up all the hours during the summer...yes we do work during the summer and all the hours after school, nights, and weekends then we'd probably work more than most 9-5ers.)

..it is difficult to name your own child because there's no name you can come up with that doesn't bring high blood pressure as it is uttered (Dustin is completely off the list!)

...you can tell it's a full moon or if it going to rain, snow, hail....anything!!! Without ever looking outside (I had heard this in college, but I can't believe how true it is...they are little human barometers.)

...you believe, "shallow gene pool" should have its own box on a report card

...you believe that unspeakable evils will befall you if anyone says, "Boy, the kids sure are mellow today."

...when out in public, you feel the urge to snap your fingers at children you do not know and correct their behavior

...you have no social life between August and June

...you think people should have a government permit before being allowed to reproduce

...you wonder how some parents MANAGED to reproduce

...you laugh uncontrollably when people refer to the staff room as the "lounge."

...you encourage an obnoxious parent to check into charter schools or home schooling and are willing to donate the UHAUL boxes should they decided to move out of district (You know that parent that has been giving me hell all year...I'd pack for them I'm so frustrated with them at this point!)

...you think caffeine should be available in intravenous form

...you can't imagine how the ACLU could think that covering your students chair with Velcro and then requiring uniforms made out of the corresponding Velcro could ever be misunderstood by the public (I love love love l-o-v-e this idea!!!)

...meeting a child's parent instantly answers the question, "Why is this kid like this?"

...you would choose a mammogram over a parent conference

...you think someone should invent antibacterial pencils and crayons...and desks and chairs for that matter!!!

...the words "I have college debt for this?" has ever come out of your mouth

This week take the time to show some appreciation for all the educators in your life. It means the world to us to have someone acknowledge all we do!

New Life

Ahh...is there anything more precious or sweet than the potential that comes with a brand new life? These adorable little boys are the blessings that belong to my friends John and Shari. I met the twins in March and I can't wait to see them again. I hear they are growing and changing daily. Every time I see a picture of them (or any baby) I think about all the potential they have and can't help but imagine what life will hold for them. Only the best I hope! It also makes me think about my life and all the potential I still have. So as I wonder what life has in store for these little boys I also feel an excitement about what life still holds in store for me!

Taylor and John...I hope life only holds the best for you, but if there are times when that doesn't seem true I hope you will always feel the love and support that surrounds you now!

So Easily Sucked In...

You are a Visionary

Your imagination, self-assuredness, and knowledge of the world combine to make you a VISIONARY.

You have clear notions of how things could be, and the confidence to try to make them that way.

You enjoy having a routine, and prefer comfort and familiarity to risk and adventure.

Not needing others' approval to forge ahead, you are confident in your designs for the future.

Your imagination allows you to envision the world as a better place.

You're better at thinking of the big picture than you are with details, and you can see wonder in abstract things.

Style and appearances are important to you, and you have a good eye for beauty.

You are somewhat rigid in your beliefs, which comes from both confidence and an aversion to change.

You are good at creating works of art in forms with which you're familiar.

You're not one to force your positions on a group, and you tend to be fair in evaluating different options.

You are balanced in your approach to problem-solving, not letting your emotions hold you up.

You much prefer to have time to plan for things, feeling better with a schedule than with keeping plans up in the air until the last minute. Your decisions are well thought out, and you're not the least bit impulsive.

If you want to be different:

Appreciate the earthly, functional elements of things.

Your clarity of vision sometimes prevents you from being open to new ideas. Try expanding your horizon of experiences, and experimenting with novel ways of doing things.

how you relate to others
You are Animated

You are outgoing, comfortable with others, and up for anything, which makes you ANIMATED.

Some people find crowds and parties exhausting, but not you! You are able to be yourself in many situations.

Sometimes it is hard for you to understand why others feel the way they do, but that doesn't stop you from trusting them or having faith that they are good people.

You know the world is complicated and that there is often more than one side to a story, so you are careful not to make judgments about others too hastily.

You would rather experience the world than sit back and observe it—you are not one to sit on the sidelines.

You are an independent thinker and don't get too worried about how others might perceive you—you are not self-conscious about being the active, engaged person that you are.

Although you have a keen understanding of different people's life circumstances, you occasionally have trouble seeing why people get so upset and emotional about things—they should just lighten up and have fun!

In addition to having faith in the world, you have faith in the people around you—you trust others to do the right thing and to be honest.

Remember that time alone can be just as fulfilling as time spent with others—take some time for yourself and you might find that there are many things in your inner world that are just as compelling as the world outside your window.

Your open-mindedness about the ways of world gives you an understanding of people's differences, but that knowledge doesn't always translate into sympathy. Don't be afraid to let your trust and understanding influence your feelings.

Poster Child For Plucking

Many months ago I wrote a post about my horrific experience getting my eyebrows waxed. Does anyone remember...the guy left an abrasion on my lid. It was pretty bad. Well, I'm not sure it was the worst thing that has happened to my eyebrows in relation to a wax. Let me explain.

Last week, I went in to get my hair cut and my eyebrows waxed. The haircut turned out great. The wax...well...not so much.

First, the woman talked a lot. I mean she seemed to get flustered and for no apparent reason. I wasn't talking to her that much, but I think she simply got distracted. She kept layering wax on my brow. Finally, she laid the cotton strip down, gave it a very brief pat, and then ripped. After that, she went "Oh" on a sharply indrawn breath.

Anyone care to guess what she'd done?

Oh yeah. I thought she'd taken off the whole eyebrow. I was trying to remember to breath and not cry while frantically reaching for a mirror. She handed me one and it was worse than I'd thought. She'd taken off a half inch chunk from the middle of my eyebrow. Scroll back down and look at my pictures. Go ahead. I'll wait.

See, my eyebrows aren't thin and fine. Nope, thanks to my father I have thick, stubborn, black eyebrows. So, are you seeing the picture in your head. Dark bushy eyebrow, pale smooth as baby butt skin, and then more dark bushy eyebrow.

I look like a freak!

When I called my mom, she was supportive until she couldn't keep the giggles in any longer. She couldn't wait to see me and it had nothing to do with the fact that she missed me or anything like that. She literally couldn't wait to see me. Thanks mom.

Thankfully, my brows have always grown fast and I'm getting the hang of this whole brow pencil thing. Now if I can stop touching my face and rubbing it off through out the day I'll be set.

Ten

I got tagged by Nikky to complete this spill-your-guts type of questionnaire thingy. And y'all know how much I love a spill-your-guts type of questionnaire! I've seen this particular version on blogs and in emails. And now it's my turn. Depending on how well you know me these might be things you already knew and then some might be enlightening. Enjoy!

The Rules: Tell ten things about yourself that most people would not know.

1. I...ahem...have a card fetish. Okay so this isn't really all that much of a secret, but perhaps you're unaware of the extent of this fetish. Can I say fetish and it not mean something sexual? Anyway, I love buying cards, sending cards, and getting cards. I will always believe that mail happiness (my coined term for getting an unexpected card or letter in the mail) is good and can turn a bad day into a good one. It's true for me and that's all that matters!

2. There is going to the bathroom and then there is "going" to the bathroom. Well when I "go" to the bathroom, I have to have something to read. I'm serious...I keep a magazine on the dryer (which is located within reaching distance of my toilet) for those "going" trips. Also, if I don't have a magazine handy then I'll read the back of my face wash or the tampon box...anything that takes my mind off the "going" process. That's a weird one right?

3. I collect shot glasses. I currently have 21 glasses of all shapes, sizes, and varieties. I usually collect them from travels and my uncle also gave me several from his own personal collection.

4. I get embarrassed for people. For example, it's torture for me to listen to people call in on the radio. I usually listen to the radio on my way to work in the morning when the news and morning shows are on. It drives me crazy when people call in and sound like duds on air. I literally cringe and have to change the station because I'm embarrassed for them.

5. I want to write a romance book. I love to read and I read a variety of things (okay the variety has come within the last few years) but I'd still pick a romance book from a pile if I could only read one thing. It's hokey because the plot line is always the same (girl wants a guy, guy is her opposite but hot, girl and guy have a hot passionate affair, discover they are in love, always a misunderstanding that breaks them up, they get together and live happily ever after...ahhh) but I really think it would be fun to write a romance novel.

6. I'm an only child. Some know this because they know me, but I wonder just how many people could guess that fact without me saying it.

7. At some point in my life I want to own a bed and breakfast. This dream (maybe an unrealistic one but a dream none the less) is so funny to me because I can't cook (at least not well!), I'm not fond of cleaning, and sometimes I really enjoy just being alone. But still...there it is. Would you come and stay at my B&B?

8. Sometimes I don't brush my teeth before bed...I just use mouthwash. Kinda hard to believe that I have never had a cavity and I don't have bad teeth!

9. Both of my pinkies are bent. It looks like both of my pinkies were broken or something. They are bent in at the first knuckle. The doctor's told my mom that it was a genetic mutation. Ha...I'm mutated!

10. Hydrangeas are my favorite flower. I think the lavender and periwinkle ones are the prettiest. I love how those colors flow together. They are pretty.

Okay, that was tough. Tougher than I thought it would be, but anyway, I'm not going to tag anyone. If you feel up to copying it take it, but if not thanks for reading my stuff!

M.A.S.H

How many of you remember the game of M.A.S.H? Girls probably remember it more simply because girls mostly played the game. I mean, boys might have, but it was probably a dirty version. Anyway, for anyone not familiar with the game M.A.S.H. it's basically a hokey look into your future. You listed several choices for husband, the number of kids you'd have, the car you'd drive, the job you'd have, etc.

Well, today during a workshop a few of the ladies around me started to play in the effort to ward off boredom. I have to admit that it reminded me of being in middle school and just knowing that if only my M.A.S.H would come true I'd be a happy camper. Well...not exactly today!

Here are my results:

I'm married to George.
We have 15 kids. (I should mention that a rule was that at least one answer had to be a funny, never going to happen kind of answer. This whole 15 kids thing...one of those never going to happen kind of answers!)
We drive a school bus. (Apparently to cart around all those kids.)
I'm an exotic dancer. (Though after 15 kids how good could I look?!)
We have a pet bird.
We live in Houston.
The colors of my wedding were light blue and lavender.
My husband is a public official. (I have to wonder if the public knew about the whole exotic dancing thing...)
A son is named Tucker and a daughter is named Shelby.
We honeymooned in my parents' house.
We live in a mansion.

It was a good laugh and brought back a few memories. So, if you're bored grab your paper and your pen and play a game of M.A.S.H!

Relay For Life (Post Script)

***Update: 24. That is a nice number. Lots of things can be said about that number, but since that's the number of hours I've been awake you'll forgive me if I don't list them all here. I'm not feeling too creative at the moment. Yesterday I wagged some bedding things out to the Relay For Life (which promotes the American Cancer Society) campsite, but that was so silly. Oh so silly. We didn't sleep at all...not one little wink. I pretty much started to crash around 3am this morning. I got up and walked another half mile, but I think that just added to the tiredness rather than boosting any energy levels. By 5:30am I just wanted my bed. Seriously, it's a miracle I made it home without driving off the road! I fully understand now why someone might use sleep deprivation as a torture tactic. I just got up from a nice 7 hour nap (sorry to those few of you who called and got the muttered "I'm sleeping"...click) and I'm still pretty sure I'd give away any secrets that I had! I had planned on going shopping today, but I think that's a pipe dream. I'm going to do some dishes, walk to the mailbox, and just chill at home. Probably in my bed and with my pajamas still on!***

Well, it's that night. The night where me and seven of my closest co-workers do what we said we'd do when we collected all the money. We spend the night (6pm - 6am) walking around the high school track. Not all at the same time mind you...that's where the term relay comes into play.

Laps to date...okay hour: 7 (that roughly equals out to be almost 2 miles).

Now, I know you're just dying to know if there is wireless out at the high school track or what. I mean, "Just how is she posting?" might be a question you're asking yourself. Well, the answer is simple. I'm at home for a potty break.

The relay organization was kind enough to have several porta-potties brought out to the track, but I guess space was an issue. They aligned these portable bathrooms on a slight incline. I want you to fully get the picture. When you step in you stay as close to the door as possible for fear of tipping the porta-potty backwards. Yes folks...the porta-potties sit at an angle. I tried to "hover and lean forward" motion to do my business (I was all for giving the porta-potties a shot), but I just couldn't do it. I even yelled for my friend to stand behind the porta-potty just in case. She was quick to let me know that she doesn't catch tipping porta-potties.

So, we've all been taking turns running on potty breaks to people's houses. This one just happens to be my turn. And since I had a few minutes I just knew that all my loyal readers would want to read about a porta-potty! Y'all do want to read about a porta-potty right?!

Well, anyway, looks like the bathroom break is over. We're off to the track again. This is a great cause and I'm having a good time, but...isn't it morning yet?

Gone But Not Forgotten

This morning I received a very unsettling message from a friend that said "please call me as soon as you get this. It's important...". You just know that these kind of messages aren't something good. I was on my way out the door for an appointment and then on to school so I wasn't able to call this morning. When I got to school, I opened an email from another friend in the same circle. That gut feeling from this morning was right. My friend's mom passed away on Monday.

I've known this friend and her family since second grade (almost twenty years) so it hurt to know that her mom had passed away. I knew that her mom had had heart trouble in the past, but I wasn't prepared to learn that it was just a routine procedure she had gone in for. It was something she'd had done before without any incident. In one of those freak things, she coded and they weren't able to bring her back. My friend lives in Washington these days and I can only imagine what her flight home yesterday must have been like; the whys and simply the shock of the whole situation. It simply breaks my heart.

All day long I've been remembering all the times I was over at her house, all the times her mom hugged me and treated me just like another kiddo. The memories are vast and long. And my heart is sad tonight. Any life that is lost is tragic, but when it happens so unexpectedly there are so many questions and so many what ifs. When I called my friend tonight she seemed to be doing okay and so in control. I'm sure that the hurt is coming and going. And I'm sure it will for a while to come too.

I couldn't help but think about my mom today. She isn't in the best of health and this makes me realize how important are the times we have together. I'm pretty sure that my world will crumble if anything happens to my mom. She's my rock. I feel a little guilty tonight because I can call up my mom and tell her I love her and my friend can't.

So, if you're a praying person, please just take a minute and lift this family up in prayer. There are a lot of shocked and shattered people tonight. It's not important to know her name or all the details, but God will know who you're asking prayer for and that is what is a true comfort.

Thank you, friends!

Change Of Scenery

Goodness, I'm tired of looking at that last post! So, I thought a change of scenary would work. Unfortunately, I'm pooped at the moment. I've had a long weekend (visiting with family and reconnecting with some old friends) so the following is a collection of...well stuff. I love it when my blog posts have no rhyme or reason. Okay, not really.

Surviovr: Yau-man (the clever dude that made a fake immunity idol) left the real one in his backpack where people could find it. I'm seriously rethinking the clever part. Anyway, everyone knows that you keep the idol on your person no matter what! To make this short...people find it, people spill beans to others, people are stupid and don't force Yau-man to play the idol. Seriously...they must have island fever. If I were on the island this is what I would have done with the knowledge that Yau-man had the idol. I would have talked out loud about voting off Yau-man and given him the idea that everyone would be voting for him so he'd use it. Of course we'd all vote for someone else so it would just be wasted. Why don't the guys think about things like that? I'm telling you...the island is getting to them.

Gallbladder surgery: My friend Sophia's husband made BBQ (extremely good BBQ) last night for everyone, but she went home early and got really sick. He called up there asking if anyone else had gotten sick thinking it was food poising. We were all okay, but it turns out that it was her gallbladder. Anyway, today the group of us decided to all make cards to send to her. Anyone who knows me for even the littlest bit of time knows how I love to send mail! So, a friend and I decided to tickle Sophia's funny bone. Our card had a grill on the front and in a smoke cloud said "Sorry about the gallbladder thing but at least it wasn't the BBQ but still..." and the inside said "sucks to be you". Come on people. That is funny! Some of you may not appreciate the humor, but she will because we enjoy going to the corner. For everyone outside of the loop the corner is what we call it when we get all tacky with each other. She and I go a lot so to her it'll be funny and that's all that counts!

Shoes: I bought new shoes. Not one or two pairs but six of them. Great sale at Payless. Thank goodness I don't have a husband to have to explain that purchase to!

This brings the collection to a close. I'll be traveling home tomorrow and hopefully will be back to regularly scheduled posts that connect in some form or fashion!

Useless Information

I really don't have anything interesting to blog about tonight. Earlier today I thought I'd have to blog about taking a lot of cold showers in the future, but the AC guy came and viola back to warm showers. I thought about going on about how I'm not Rachel Ray but still managed to make Earth Day bars with my class without setting the school on fire. Okay, so the bars were a little brownish black around the corners, but I'm sticking with "it adds flavor" to the dish. Oh and when I left school on Friday Timmy (despite the fact that Timmy might be a Timmette)the catapiller was alive and munching on leaves. So, you see...nothing really new or interesting.

I stole this little (well depending on your definition of little) question and answer thing from my pal Nina and in the spirit of my other friend Ed I'm going to provide you with a lot of information you probably didn't really care to know.

Oh come on...you can tough it out!

1. Introduce yourself?
Steffany Lynn (My parents were so creative when it came to my name; a fact I'm coming to appreciate!)

In my classroom teaching Science or Social Studies

Arm and Hammer brand

4. What brand of shampoo is in your shower right now?

Lane Bryant...they fit the curves in all the right places.

Well of course it is...thanks to my parents. Mental note...get your own car insurance!

14. Do you like sushi?
I'm sorry. I just threw up a little in my mouth.

15. Have you ever been to Tiffany & Co. or Saks 5th Ave?
Yes! I've actually been to the Saks on the actual 5th Ave. Goodness, NYC was fun!

16. Did your parents spoil you growing up?
Oh yeah, but thankfully I didn't turn out bratty. Well, that's my opinion but I guess it depends on who you ask as to that bratty part.

Yes

TV Guide (like you're surprised), Memory Makers, Paper Crafts, Shape

19. Do you remember the WB show "Popular?

21. What do you think about gay marriage?
I am against it.

22. Who do you think will be the next president?
I don't know and frankly I don't care. Rant all you want, but I'm completely happy to be totally polically uninformed.

6 hours....360 miles....7 major cities away

30. Are you happy with your job?
Yep...I love it!

medium rare

34. Britney Spears...ready to have a nervous break down or just having fun?
I don't know and I really don't care.

35. What do you usually order at Taco Bell?
Nothing if I can help it...I like Taco Bueno. Now from Taco Bueno I'd order a muchacho and a side of beans and cheese.

I don't think so, but I've set through numerous watchings of the sequal Scarlett.

I didn't see it.

Yes to New York City. I'm not sure I really want to go to L.A.

45. How many states have you been to where all you saw was the airport?
One and it's actually a funny story. I know...you're so close to the end but this is a good one. My cousin was living in Denver and I was flying back to Austin. I had a layover in Kansas City. I went around for weeks telling people I was going to Kansas. I'd never been to Kansas. Umm...I've still never been to Kansas. No one corrected me that Kansas City was in Missouri. So, Missouri is the state where all I've seen is the airport...at night in the dark.

46. Do you think 50 questions is enough?
Yeah probably...too bad we're only at 46

47. Are you currently planning a trip?
Yes. I'm going to Cozumel in July.

48. Is Ryan Seacrest gay?
Who is Ryan Seacrest?

49. Do you take anti-depressants?
No

50. Have you ever googled your name and found out something?
Yeah, I played that game where you type in your name and the word needs...I need a lot of weird stuff

Hey...you made it and you know a little bit more about me. Not bad huh?

Brown Thumb

Me: Oh crap! This Lima bean plant the Science teacher gave me to grow in my room is dying. I mean I don't know for sure that it's dying...maybe it's supposed to turn brown and go limp.
Kids in the class: "Ms. Stewart...our plant doesn't look right."
Me: "Well..."
Kids: "Did you give it water?"
Another Kid: "Maybe it needs more sunlight." (I should point out that I have exactly zero windows in my room!)
More Kids: "How come this bean hasn't sprouted?"
Kid Who Hits The Nail On The Head: "Ms. Stewart killed it!"

Yes, friends, I killed the Lima bean plant entrusted to my care. We have a wonderful Science teacher that is always planning neat activities for the kids. They talked about plants and their various parts and then they planted three Lima beans in a cup. They brought it to me, healthy and alive, and said I needed to take care of it.

Now, I should stop right here and let you in on a secret...I have a brown a thumb. I can kill silk plants. I'm dead (sorry I had to stop and giggle at my cleverness)...great I giggled too much and can't even remember where this thought was going. Anyway, I can't keep plants alive. I've tried and I stink at it. Can you imagine my panic at having to care for 21 little darlings' plant? Around Easter we had a four day weekend. Being the dutiful teacher that I am, I emailed the Science teacher to ask about how to care for the plant over the weekend. Well, the thing is I forgot to check back. It's demise could have been preempted by the four days of dehydration it suffered. Humph.

Anyway, I've been trying to get these beans to grow and sprout, but they haven't. The teacher across the hall is practically growing a tree out of her cup and ours has barely sprouted out of the dirt. I didn't know how long I could keep it's sorry condition from the kids, but today they discovered the awful truth about their teacher. She kills harmless plants.

We're supposed to be getting a painted lady caterpillar next week...maybe I'll have more luck with a class pet than I did with a class plant!

A Bit Disillusioned

One of the things I truly love about my job is when at the end of the day I know...deep down know...that today was a productive day. On those days all my kids learned something, light bulbs were coming on, and I know that when parents ask how the day went the kids are going to know what to say.

And then there are days like today...where I've been totally disillusioned about teaching. Someone today told me that if you got rid of the parents the teacher's job would be so much easier. Thankfully, I don't have a lot of parent issues, but the ones I have are rough.

Yesterday, a student got in trouble for not participating in class, not following the rules, acting out, and being disrespectful. I sent a note home to the parent letting her know why her child had moved his clip. Today, I got a letter back in response. It said a lot, but the highlights (or lowlights depending on how you look at it) said that I obviously had no classroom management skills so therefore I couldn't hold the students' attention. It also charged me with having reading as a very low priority because I was destroying her son's interest in reading. And the kicker...I do not have the experience nor knowledge to be teaching children. The letter didn't imply her child but children in general.

Yeah, it left me in a funk all day that I just couldn't shake.

I know that those charges are not true. I am a good teacher and I am impacting students' lives in a positive way. It was just hard to hear (or read) that a parent has felt that all year long I've been harming her child. Trust me, I'm still a little upset about the whole thing, but I've been shaking it off more and more as the day has gone on.

I debated about not putting these thoughts on screen, but I know this isn't the first time this will happen so I want to remember that yes it wasn't pleasant, but I got over it. And more importantly...I know it isn't true.

I am a great teacher!

Shake, Rattle, And Roll

It's no secret that I hate laundry. I've even dedicated a post or two to this very topic. Well, guess what today is? Oh yeah...laundry day. Normally I let the clothes pile up in the laundry basket until dirty towels, unmentionables, and articles of clothing are exploding out of the basket and onto my shoes in the closet. I sort of turned over a new leaf so today there are only four managable loads of laundry. I put it off yesterday, but after reading my friend Becky's (by the way I think y'all should check her out!) blog about her laundry woes I felt compelled to do laundry. Thanks Becky...thanks a lot. Your status on the Christmas card list is still under question. Just teasing!

Anyway, back to my laundry or rather my washer. When I moved, my great grandmother said I could take her washer and dryer. This was great because I didn't have to buy one. Now, they're old (think back to when mustard colored appliances were in) but free is free. You don't look a free gift horse in the mouth. So, the washer and dryer work, but the washer tends to shake. Now before you start thinking of solutions let me say that I've tried them all. I've tried making sure the size of the load matches the amount of clothes in the washer. I've resperated the clothes that bunched up on one side. I've tried sitting on my washer. Nothing helps...it shakes. I was so funny to see the expression on my parents' faces when they came to visit. It would make this huge racket and they'd look at me and down the hallway. I'd remind them that this is normal so not to worry. The funniest part was when it started to shake.

Let me see if I can help you get the picture in your head. When my washer shakes my whole house shakes. Remember that I live in a mobile home (one that is closing in on thirty years old) so yes, everything shakes. My dad thought we were having an earthquake or something! Now, it's not like from the outside you see my house doing the boogy or anything but inside you see the entertainment center in the livingroom (on the opposite end of the house) vibrate. You can feel it on the couch and recliner where you're sitting. But the funnest place to experience "The Washer" is in my bed.

The washer is located on the other side of my bedroom wall. The bed isn't on this wall, but can you imagine what it would be like if it was! Anyway, my whole bed shakes. Not just a little, but a lot. Think of those cheap movies where the couple goes to the motel and the guy wiggles his eyebrows and pops a quarter in the headboard. Yeah...the whole bed shakes! It's the craziest thing. Sometimes I'll jump on my bed during the spin cycle and think "if anyone saw me now...". Oh goodness.

So, have you got the point about my washer? When my dad was here last weekend, he put up some shelves for me in my bedroom. Then I turned around and put a bunch of heavy stuff on the shelves (like pictures and vases). I was a little nervous since this was the first washing since the shelves had gone up. I was picturing the stuff vibrating right off and into the floor. So, I started some towels today and then planted myself on my bed to watch the shelves. I was ready to jump up and save stuff when it started to fall. Just so you know...watching shelves is really boring.

Thankfully, it made it through the first load without being shaken right off the wall. I have high hopes for the next three loads. So, there you go...another laundry experience at my house. Don't you wish you lived here?! I keep telling myself it is things like this that make my life so entertaining and well - I like that!

Seriously...Abe Lincoln And A Beaver?

***If you were amused by the last post, please check out the comments from said post. I added another gem that happened just today. It might cause you to laugh and it might cause an eye roll, but it is 100% true!***

Okay...someone...please tell me what is up with the sleep medicine commercial that has the sorry Abe Lincoln impersinator and that talking beaver. I don't get it!

Seriously, what do Abe Lincoln and a beaver have to do with not sleeping or dreams for that matter? Is this some dirty joke I don't get? Huh?

If I did have sleep trouble I don't think I'd want to take that medicine just on the off chance that it might make me dream about Abe Lincoln and a beaver. Am I the only one that thinks every other sentence in this post sounds dirty?

Seriously, the ad guys for this spot went way off. If I was whatever sleep aid company that was I'd be demanding my money back.

Seriously!

Oh, can you tell I'm tired of Grey's repeats and I'm dying for some new episodes?!

32 And Dwindling

One of the faculty mentioned today that we only have 32 days left of school. I couldn't believe it. It has gone so fast! My mom used to tell me that the older I got the faster time would fly. Being young and dumb I doubted this, but low and behold it is true. Anyway, in honor of the last 32 days, I thought I'd share some little funnies from the classroom. I bet you've all gotten some sort of email (or lived it) that has funny little things kids say or the horrors of raising boys. The funniest part of those for me these days...I know kids that actually say things like that!

I know teachers probably shouldn't have favorites, but one of mine loves to give me hugs. I can count on one every day from him. Well, the other day, he came up to hug me and held on a little longer than normal.

Me: "Sweetie, what are you doing?"
Sweetie: "Mmmm, Ms. Stewart you smell!"
Me: (a perplexed look on my face) "What?"
Sweetie: "Good...I mean you smell good."

During a unit on rocks and minerals, our class came across a picture of Mount Rushmoore. I asked why Mount Rushmoore was important. The normal answers were given about it having presidents on it and such. Since just a few weeks earlier we'd talked about President's Day, I asked if anyone could name the presidents on the monument. We did great with Lincoln, Washington, and even got Roosevelt. I noticed that one little girl was practically hovering above her seat and I thought her arm might fly right off she was waving it so hard. This child normally rushes to shout out answers so I wanted to reward her patience.

Me: "Okay, B. Thank you for not shouting out. Do you know who the other president is?"
B: "George....George....Clooney!"
Me: (struggling and failing to not laugh) "No. He's not a president."
B: "Are you sure Ms. Stewart?"
Me: "Yeah, I'm pretty sure."

My kids love to ask me how old I am. I told them once (on my birthday) and I expected that would be the end of that...it wasn't. I have one boy who particularly loves to ask me. I think he does it simply to annoy me. Anyway, I finally told him that it wasn't polite to ask a lady how old she was and he seemed satisfied with that answer. Well, several weeks later we got a new volunteer in our classroom. He was a huge hit with the kids and was pretty easy on the teacher's eyes. Anyway, I'd be wondering how old he was and if he was a student or just a generous guy. So, imagine my surprise when I heard this little boy out on the playground asking how old he was.

Me: "It isn't polite to ask people how old they are, M."
M: "I thought you only meant women."
Me: "I mean grown-ups. It isn't polite to ask grown-ups how old they are."
M: "Oh okay."
Me: "So, did he tell you how old he was?"
M: "22"
Me: "Okay...go play."

And that ended my fascination with the volunteer. I don't do younger.

There you go - just a few of the wonderful little snippets that make teaching so...entertaining!

Happy Easter!

Happy Easter everyone! I hope you have a blessed weekend...however you choose to spend it.

This weekend my parents are here visiting and I'm so excited! It's hard being so far away from them so I really enjoy their visits. Yesterday we went shopping (okay Daddy just footed the bill and endured three hours at a Sam Moon center) and today we've set around talking and watched a movie. And to reward my dad for being such a good sport yesterday, we're driving out to the lake this afternoon so he can look for a good fishing spot. Hopefully, he'll have some time to go fish tomorrow.

Also, the weather has given us a surprise! A cold front came through yesterday so it's hovering around 40 degrees today. We even had big fat snowflakes this morning. Yes, you read that right...big fat SNOWFLAKES in Huntsville! It didn't last for very long and it didn't stick, but they were falling! It was pretty. I tried to take a picture but I'm not sure how well the snowflakes came out. If it's good I'll update the post with a picture. I can't believe we had snow...well at least for a few minutes!

Everyone take care and happy Easter! :)

Money Madness and Mayham

It's that time of the month. No, guys don't run off...not that time. The time where my paycheck has hit the bank and the bills have poured in. I just have to say that this bill thing isn't all it's cracked up to be. Be forewarned you young readers out there! I used to dream about the days when I could pay my bills and truly be independent. Oh to be young and dumb again.

Anyway, I should start out saying that I make the same pledge every month...I WILL keep my check register up-to-date and I WILL write down those debit card purchases. This usually lasts until the first debit card purchase and I toss the receipt on accident. I've done better with writing down checks but I'm big enough to give credit where it's due...I have duplicate checks these days. Well, at the beginning of the month my register looks all nice and neat. I'm one of those strange ones that writes who it is to and what is was for. By the end of the month...I'm lucky if I get the check number or debit symbol and the amount in there.

Oh why do I do this to myself?!

So, tonight was the night of reckoning for the check register. I printed off the online statement, grabbed my checkbook, and the calculator. Somewhere between checking off the cleared checks and sifting through receipts that had collected at the bottom of my purse, I gave up and just grabbed a new register book thing. Ahh, fresh and clean. I love having a new check register. I guess it goes back to my desire to stay organized and up-to-date.

So, I paid the bills and I figure any checks or debits that clear I'll just subtract from my current balance. Geez...I really need an accountant, be like one of those girls that marry some rich old guy! Or, just stick to my commitment to WRITE IT DOWN!

Ohh Ohh Ohh...It's So Devious!

A few faithful readers who have been reading for a while might remember that I'm a Survivor fan. Several seasons back I even did a weekly recap. I thought it was great...everyone should share my passion for reality TV. Well, in my reality, no one really cared so I stopped. And this isn't my introduction to say that I'm going to revert back to those recaps. Unfortunately, I think after a dozen seasons or so of Survivor it has started to lose it's appeal to me. Seriously, it's the same story with new characters. Lately, my attitude has been if I'm home I'll watch. If not...I can easily catch up next week.

Well, let me just say...I have officially been drawn back into the sink hole that is Survivor. I haven't been a faithful watcher this season so let me just say my upcoming facts might not be as factual as a faithful watcher's might be. If you're a fan and I've gotten something wrong feel free to correct me in the comments. Apparently, there are two immunity idols this season. One is located on one tribe's beach and the other is on the other tribe's beach. I think these immunity idols could basically reshape the game if the owner knows how to play it right.

Well, Yau-Man found the idol this week in the dirt. His excitement was actually kind of fun to watch. You see, he's this old fart that looks like a strong wind will blow him away. I bet you he was counting his lucky stars that he found himself on the winning tribe or he'd be gone. Anyway, he was extremely happy to have found this petrified turtle thing on a rope.

Now...for the BEST part of the whole show...what has drawn me in against my will...instead of telling anyone (other than his partner in crime Earl...which I'd go on about if I were doing weekly recaps...but you NEVER agree to share your idol...big eye roll and sigh) he found it, he makes a fake one to put back in the exact spot.

Okay, I know I put a lot of those ... (my friend B would know what those are called) in that last paragraph, but let me just say it again. Yau-Man found the immunity idol and then made a fake on to put back in the ground. Presumably another tribe member will find it and think they have the real deal. I love it!!! It is so devious. In all the seasons that immunity idols have been in play, I never even imagined something devious like this. And I'm a competive person so it's totally something I would do! I bet a lot of past season immunity idol winners are kicking themselves for not thinking up something like this. Anyway, I can just see how this is going to play out. A disgruntled tribe mate is going to find the "idol" and think they've got the power. And as any Survivor watcher knows, the disgruntled tribe mate is going to shoot off his or her mouth, piss off a lot of people, get voted off, and then hold up this fake idol. Oh...I can't wait!

So, you see due to my own deviously competitive nature when it comes to games and winning I've been sucked back into watching every week. I have to know how this little twist will effect the game. I wonder if Yau-Man will be able to keep this little piece of trickery to himself. Oh, just when you think you've beaten the addiction something like this happens!

Tweet Tweet

Another weekend is coming to a close and I can honestly say it has been a very productive one at that. Yesterday, I spent most of the day doing some in depth Spring cleaning. Not exactly fun, but a clean home is a great feeling.

Friday at school, a few people were asking about my weekend plans and I mentioned that I needed to clean my bathtub. I'll admit it isn't one of my regular weekly chores, but I try to get to it once a month. Unfortunately, it's a chore that has been pushed to the back burner for several months now. With a small sense of shame I'll admit that the bottom was so soap-scummy I spent more time trying to stand up straight than getting clean in the shower. I know...ick. When I related that as my reason for needing to clean, a friend at work said, "Don't tell that story to anyone else." After hitting it with Comet and a brush I can say that it's sparkling once again! I also dusted anything that stood still, washed every stitch I own, and put fresh sheets on the bed. All of that was in addition to the regular routine. It sure felt nice to go to bed last night in a perfectly clean and straight house!

I slept well until early this morning. For one thing, my internal clock obviously doesn't know that it is the weekend and on weekends I get to sleep late. I still woke up about 6:30 but I fought the urge to fully come awake courageously. Unfortunately, the birds outside my window decided to join in the fray.

I'd just like to say that I like birds. I think they are cute and make some sweet sounds...but not at 7:00 in the morning. It seemed that the little things took pleasure in tweet tweeting this morning. It wasn't a constant tweet tweet, but two or three short tweets in a row every minute on the minute. I guess it doesn't help that my bed is right under the window. Have you ever noticed that if you're trying to sleep and you hear the birds chirping it begins to sound like words? I swear...the longer I listened the more it sounded like sleepy head, sleepy head, sleepy head.

Giving up on any efforts to sink back into dream land, I got up and started the day. And it's been another beautiful day today! Winter is my favorite season, but I think Spring must be next in line. Things are starting to bloom and the weather has been so fabulous. To top off this great day, I tried out a new recipe that turned out yummy and this is the important part...I didn't set off any smoke alarms! It's okay...go ahead...clap and applaud...lol. Anyway, this weekend has been restful and productive. I hope your weekend has been too!

What Is A Meme Anyway?

Feeling brave the other night, I agreed to let Ed interrogate...err I mean interview me. Just kidding! I like to find out things about people and this is sort of a new twist on the old questionnaire type thingies. The following was required to be added to my post so here goes:

The Rules: Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me.” I respond by asking you five personal questions (I will leave these questions for you in my comments) so I can get to know you better. If I already know you well, expect the questions may be a little more intimate! You WILL update your journal/bloggy thing/whatever with the answers to the questions (please don't leave your answers in my comments unless you don't have a blog). You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the post. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.

1. How do you decide which panties to wear each day?
Oh, that's an easy one! I have panties that have the day of the week on them just like everyone else. Right...just like everyone else? ;)

Seriously, I have all kinds of undies in the drawer (boy shorts, bikini, hipsters (my personal favorite), granny panties, and a thong or two thrown in for good measure. Above all, comfort plays a major role in which pair I grab from the stack. Also, I think about the kind of pants I'm going to be wearing.

2. Waxed, trimmed or fully natural?
I feel like the text should be red because I know I'm blushing. Let's just say a combination of naturally trimmed.

3. As a teacher, are there any kids in your class you would like to take out behind the woodshed?
NO! I know some people are thinking I'm just saying that, but truthfully, NO! I like all my kids. True there are some who have quirks that get on my nerves, but they all add to the classroom in a great way.

Just today, during Science, we were looking at a picture of Mount Rushmore (we're studying rocks and minerals) and I asked who these guys were that they were so important to be carved into a mountain. My kids dutifully answered "Presidents!". I took it a step forward to see if they knew who they were. We did great until Thomas Jefferson...and one girl claimed it was George...George Clooney. I cracked up!

See...who would want any of that out behind the woodshed?!

4. If you had to give up your computer or your television for one week, which would it be?
Oh you can't imagine how tough this question is as I'm addicted to both. I would have to say that I'd give up my computer before I'd give up TV. What can I say...I have couch (or recliner or bed) potato tendencies!

5. What makes you smile?
Too many things to count or list make me smile. One of my favorites though are Mrs. Baird's trucks. There is a bakery/factory in my hometown and they have trucks that have little sayings on the back of the trucks. My all time favorite: We haul buns! I smile every time. :)

Well, there you go. Here is a little bit more about me (some of that probably way more than you wanted to know about me) so if you're so inclined (or brave!) drop me a line and I'll ask you five questions.

Pass The Kleenex Please

My Spring Break travels came to a close late Saturday night so I didn't pay much attention to my porch, but I did notice that it looked...off. Well, Sunday morning on my way to church I noticed again the offness of the porch. It looked greenish. I was running late so I made a mental note to look into this greenish business when I came home.

After getting home and changing clothes, I went out to investigate. Yes, my porch was a strange shade of yellowish green. It seemed to be covered in a fine dusting of something. And even more perplexing was that all my deck furniture was covered in it too. I had no idea what this stuff was, but I ran my fingers through it. I will never learn to curb my curiosity.

I couldn't tell what it was by touch or sight so I just left it. Monday morning I discovered the yellow stuff on my car. What the heck is this stuff?

Thankfully, at work everyone was talking about the fine gold dusting we'd received. Apparently mine isn't the only porch, deck furniture, and car that was covered in pollen. Yep, the nose itching, sneeze producing pollen. Maybe I should mention that I'm highly allergic to pollen. Especially tree pollen. Apparently, this is very common down here in East Texas, but not so in West Texas. I've been told that trying to wash it off the car is useless and using a broom to clean off my porch will only track it in my house (more so than what is already tracked in on my shoes). Thank goodness Spring only comes once a year!

Oh well...live and learn...and buy stock in Kleenex!

Last For A While...Promise

This is me and Dex. He's a fat kitty who I love and miss terribly! I got to love all over him while I was home for Spring Break. I can't say that he loved it, but I sure did!

I have a lot of things to post about, but it's kind of late (for me at least!) so I'll probably wait until tomorrow. Be sure and stay tuned...some of these posts just might tickle your funny bone!

P.S. I think this one is real :)

What Is With The Fake Smile?

It seems that recently my blog has become a self-photo blog. It wasn't as tramatic as I thought it would be either. Oh, I'd posted pictures before (things like my cat or my Christmas tree), but I hadn't posted any of me. It might sound silly, but for me, putting myself (literally myself) out on the internet was a big deal. You just never know who might cut you and where they might paste you and I don't consider myself a raving beauty so I didn't want any negative comments. Thankfully, everyone has been complimentary and I haven't been pasted anywhere unsavory.

Anyway, all these pictures has brought something to my attention. I really do have a fake smile. That smile on my face...it's not the real thing. Apparently the real thing is much prettier and my mouth isn't open so much. I bet this all seems random, but for many many many years my parents have been telling me not to give the fake smile when I have my picture taken. And for many many many years I've questioned that what if that really is my smile. Are they saying my real smile seems fake?

Well, apparently, my parents aren't the only ones that have noticed this fake trend. My friend G took a lot of pictures of us over the last week (cook off, sock hop, and Dr. Seuss Day pictures) and we were looking at them today. Out of no where she asks me, "Steff, what is up with the fake smile? You've got one on in every picture." Not to mention that of course my parents had to mention that the smiles were all fake when I shared the pictures with them. Well...crap.

It's hard for me to distinguish between the real smile (the one that comes out when cameras aren't around) and the faker (the photo ham). So, I asked a few people. What makes my smile "real". Apparently I have dimples when I have a true smile, my eyes light up, and my mouth has a more relaxed posture. Okay.

My apologies to those of you who have to suffer through the faker photos. Now, that I've admitted that I'm capible of a fake smile, I have to wonder how I can coax a real smile to the surface when the camera is around. I suppose it'll involve practice and a lot of exposure to cameras. Wish me luck...this might not be pretty!

The 50s

I defintely liked Sock Hop day better than Dr. Seuss day! I was pretty nervous about that whole white socks and black shoes thing, but it turned out very cute. A group of first year teachers decided to dress up like the Pink Ladies from the movie Grease. We wore our hair in pig tails, had scarves tied around our necks, wore men's dress shirts, and of course...the pink sweaters! I didn't get all that many pictures on my camera, but my friend G is supposed to be mailing me the ones from her camera. If any are worth sharing I'll post them.

On to other news...the weekend was good. I went shopping yesterday. I discovered a huge Sam Moon shopping center (three seperate stores!) and came away with some jewelry and new purses. That's what I should have a picture up of! Anyway, the plan was to get a new purse and some new Spring shoes, but since I kind of blew my budget on purses the shoes will have to wait. Sacrifices people...we all have to make sacrifices.

Next week is Spring Break and I'm going home!!! I haven't been home since Christmas and this Mama/Daddy's girl is more than ready.

I hope your weekend was great too!

The Things I Will Do

I love teaching and I love my kids and I got a little wrapped up in that love today. That has to be the explanation for why I dressed in black, wore a bib and a bow around my neck, and kept a felt Dr. Seuss hat on my head all day. What other explanation could there be?

Tomorrow is actually Dr. Seuss's birthday...the fiftieth one...but we have another thing planned so our school celebrated today. ALL faculty came to school ready to be dressed up by our lovable librarian, Mrs. R, as Cat In The Hat. Here was me...in all my Dr. Seuss glory.

Anyway, Mrs. R got everyone dolled up (I did decide to abstain from the paper tail...it wouldn't have done much for my actual tail) and I have to admit that it did add something to the day. We had a float (Green Eggs And Ham from the 2nd grade class was the best. You know, in my prideful opinion!) parade. Each class took a book and decorated an AV cart. We had special Rhyme Time announcements on the hour. (Again, I think my class really rocked with the classic Prelutsky My Fish Was Small poem.) We had yummy kitty snacks. We watched Dr. Seuss movies. While the day was loaded with fun it wasn't exactly our highest learning day. As one teacher pointed out "We're dressed like cats. Do you really think we're going to teach them anything today?"

And tomorrow might not be any better. The PTO is hosting a Sock Hop tomorrow night. And to get everyone in the mood, we're supposed to come to school tomorrow wearing a 50s outfit. A bunch of the first year teachers got together and we decided to bring back the Pink Ladies from Grease. I'm sure we're going to look super cute, but I'm having a hard time understanding how socks with flats was ever a fashion DO.

Okay, well I need to go roll my jeans and find a scarf for my neck.

Top Ten...

Reasons Why I Haven't Written

10. I support the migrant ink workers in their struggles against capitalist oppression.

9. I didn't have any stationary with a cute unicorn or even cuter cat on it. (They are so talking about Lisa Frank...I loved her!)

8. Everything I write is impounded by a special Senate subcommitte studying the inkworkers thing.

7. I live in fear that I might dot an "i" with a heart or a smiley face.

6. I took a paper-folding class and every time I try and fold a letter it becomes a graceful swan or a scale-covered dragon.

5. All my goldfish formed a suicide pact and went belly up together.

4. Still pretty upset about Number 5.

3. Had to call a plumber after fish's funeral--don't ask!

2. When sitting down to write someone of your stature, I can never think of anything to say.

And the number one reason why I haven't written...

1. I'm the kind of mindless airhead that doesn't get around to writing old friends, even though I think about them all the time!

I got this card from a dear friend the other day. It came right out of the blue and frankly was just the thing I needed that day. And I love how mail happiness does that!

Normally, I'm the one sending cards and mail happiness to people. I have a probably very unhealthy relationship with greeting cards, but I buy them and send them on a regular basis. I know how they make me feel and I hope that I can give a little of that away too. I've never been one to talk on the phone, but I could always write. And these days, some of my favorite people are the people that I stay connected with through the occassional card or letter. I like that.

And speaking of mail happiness, I got some blog happiness today too! My friend...a true friend I'd say...found me and connected in my comments. For my friend, B...this top ten list so could have been from me to you! I hope you're doing well and I miss all the shopping trips. I need a good shopping partner down here!

It really is amazing what mail can do for a person!

Lakewood

I was in Houston this weekend and I had the opportunity to visit Lakewood Church. For those of you who don't know, Lakewood Church is the largest church in the United States and is pastored by Joel Osteen. That is a fact. From here on out, everything else said in this post is strictly the opinion of me, Steffany, the author of this blog.

I grew up in church. It was a Baptist church to be more precise. Our church is probably moderate in size. These days I would say that I know about half the membership directory, but in my hay day (while I still lived at home) I knew practically everyone. That fact comes from having grown up in church. My family went three times a week. I was actively involved in the youth department. I sang in the choir. The pastor knew my name. Since then, I've been a member of one other church and I regularly attend church here, but I haven't switched my membership. Through all my years, I've come to the conclusion that church isn't so much about the building or programs. It's about the people and the fellowship of like-minded believers.

My first experience with anything Lakewood or Joel Osteen came just a few months ago. My parents and I were in town looking for somewhere for me to live when I moved and it was a Sunday morning. We flipped through the TV channels and came upon the televised service at Lakewood. I will admit that Joel Osteen was a powerful preacher. The message was great and I actually found that it applied to me. I know that was when I first felt the desire to visit that church if I ever had the chance. And several times after that, I made it a point to catch the televised service on TV. I was still impressed.

Imagine my surprise and delight to discover that someone I worked with was a member of Lakewood Church. I plied her with questions like "Is he really that humble in person?", "Does he always have that plastic smile on his face?", and "What's it like to be a member of the largest church in America?". Thankfully, she was patient and answered my questions good naturedly. Anyway, when this weekend came up I asked her if we could go to Lakewood since we'd still be in town. She readily agreed that this was a great idea.

I had jokingly asked if the service was going to be like a rock concert. She looked at me a little put out and said no. Again, I jokingly said I guess that meant I couldn't ask him to sign my Bible. Yeah, that wasn't well received either. I assured her that I knew how to mind my manners and I would not cause any embarrassment for her. Unfortunately, I believe the effect of Lakewood has lost it's novelty for her. For me, it was an eye-opening experience and sort of left a bad taste in my mouth.

Let me explain.

Lakewood is a huge church, but I wasn't prepared for just how huge. We parked in a parking garage next to the church and took our place in a long line of people making their way up the ramps, across the street, and into the building. And the building doesn't look like a church either. It's very square and has a downtown business plaza feel. Anyway, when we went into the stadium...I mean sanctuary...well it's just as awesome looking in person as it does on the TV. We made our way down to the front section. I mentioned to one of many ushers that I was a visitor and I suppose that meant we could sit in the VIP section. It was roped off and everything.

At this point, I was sure that the message would be lost on me as I took in this massive sanctuary. There were three huge screens. On either side of the choir loft (that is a terrible description, but I'm at a loss of words to describe the two sides where the choir stood) were these rock and water type garden things. Yeah...the water flows and everything. The people...my goodness. There were so many of them. I kind of wondered if it was a camera trick that all the seats were filled. It isn't.

The church is huge and the sanctuary is lavish. There isn't anything bad or good about that...it's just a fact. I started feeling uncomfortable when the choir came in and it truly was like a rock concert. A Christian rock concert but one none the less. The choir was all but dancing up there in the loft. Hands were raised, people were clapping their hands, bodies were moving...some in a manner I don't think befitting of a church. I had asked my friend where Joel Osteen was and she told me that he and his wife come in during the first song so as not to disrupt the service. Disrupt the service? I wasn't sure what that meant.

It meant that if we lived back in Bible times and palm fronds were around these people would be waving them and crying "Hosanna". I kid you not...camera flashes were going off when Joel Osteen walked up to the pulpit. I wasn't impressed. At this point, I had to look inward and wonder what exactly I wasn't impressed with. I'm sure that Satan was playing with my heart and mind. I know that I wouldn't be able to live up to such a warm "reception" service after service, week after week without a little of it going to my head. I guess I wasn't able to leave the thought alone that he must take some pleasure in the way the congregation was behaving. I suppose the only people that know just how humble his heart is would be Joel Osteen and God.

Now, I did truly enjoy the message. I was able to put aside my distaste with the pageantry of the service and focus on that aspect. It was a good one. And just like all the rest, I was able to relate it to my own life. That is about the only thing I took away from Lakewood. My friend asked me if I wanted to go back to the visitors' reception and meet Joel Osteen and his family. At the beginning of the day I would have jumped at the chance, but by the end of the two hour service I politely declined. I think as far as my connection to Joel Osteen and Lakewood should go no further than my TV on Sunday mornings.

On the way back to her house, she asked how I enjoyed it. I told her that I enjoyed the message, but that Lakewood wouldn't be a church I would want to be a part of on a regular basis. I could tell she didn't get it and that was okay with me. She probably would find a small service at my church not to her liking. Some people can be satisfied with being part of something nationally recognized, on TV every week, not being known from Adam by their pastor, and all the production. I couldn't.

I'm still going to watch Joel Osteen on TV (I do like the way he preaches) but I can't help but wonder what Joel Osteen would be like without the stadium, the cameras in peoples' faces (yes, even during the personal prayer partner time), the national recognition, the thousands of members, the flashy house, all that stuff that keep him on the pedestal.

An Early-To-Bed-er

Last night I made a startling discovery....I'm actually an old fart in the body of a young and fresh twenty-something. It's okay. I had to take a moment to let it set in too.

This all came about because a friend wanted me to come over and hang out last night. Normally, I'd jump at the chance, but last night it was about 9:30 when she called. I should add in that I was coming off of a touch of the stomach virus so that might have played a part...though an extremely small one. Anyway, I glanced at my clock (9:34pm) and then I took in my surroundings (under the covers, in my bed, in my pajamas, with sleepy crusts already forming in the corner of my eyes) and decided that it was just "too late" for tonight.

And then that is when she lowered the boom on me..."You're such an old fart!". Okay, so I admit...I like to go to bed early. I still have a bedtime and I pretty much follow it regularly. I didn't like being called an old fart but I couldn't argue. Then came the worst part. "Oh well...it is past your bedtime. Sleep tight Granny! See you in the morning."

Apparently, being an old fart wasn't just a one time thing. I guess it's something I am all the time. So, it brings to mind a few questions.

What exactly is an old fart?

I think of old farts being old...really old. And they are grouchy. I'm not really old. I'm not even regularly old. I'm young. I'm in the prime of my life. I'm living the carefree life of a woman in her mid-twenties. Oh, I'm doing all that, but on the sleeping schedule of an old person. And I'm not grouchy. Okay, fine...I'm not grouchy very much. I think it's because I'm getting enough sleep people!

Is being responsible equal to being an old fart?

Just because I make sure I'm in bed where I can get a reasonable 7-8 hours of sleep a night doesn't mean I'm an old fart. It means that I'm a responsible adult. I make sure that my body has the energy to go and do all those twenty-something activities. By getting a good night's sleep, I'm being responsible with my body. Just the other day I read all kinds of benefits that come to your body from getting sleep. And, hello...the biggest one of all...I have a job that requires me to get up early (5:45 IN THE MORNING) so it just makes sense to get a good night's sleep.

What bedtime qualifies one to be an old fart?

When I think of old folks going to bed, I think of them hitting the sack in the afternoon. I definitely don't do that! So what if I go to bed about 10pm on most nights? I think that is a perfectly normal time to start winding down for the day. I think it just seems early considering that my accuser usually rolls into bed about 2am. Yeah...I don't have the sleeping habits of an old person. She has the sleeping habits of an infant...always up in the middle of the night.

Should I really have to defend my sleeping habits?

NO! My sleeping habits are keeping me healthy, well rested, and not so grouchy. I don't sleep with anyone so I'm not having to worry if someone is ready for bed. I should be able to go to bed at 10pm if I want to and you know what? Most of the time I want to!

So there it is. A twenty-something year old can also be an old fart when it comes to going to bed. Hmm...that wasn't as hard as I thought it'd be!

Like A Starburst...Sorta

It's the height of flu season at school. Monday there were four kids absent and I sent three more home with temperatures over 101. Today there were five kids absent and I sent one home with a fever about mid-morning. I think I'm turning into one of those germ-a-phobs who wash their hands every five seconds, bathe in hand sanitizer, and actually like the smell of Lysol!

I've been lucky this year that I've only caught one thing (knocking on wood) this year. It was bronchitis in October. But, today I started feeling a little tired and achy. My head began to hurt and it throbbed even more with every tummy ache complaint and sniffle. I feel like I should wear some bubble outfit tomorrow!

Anyway, I called my mom (who do you think the teacher complains to?) to tell her to pray hard that I didn't catch anything. I have big plans this weekend. There is a BBQ cook-off, cowboys, alcohol, cowboys...sorry. Where was I? Oh yeah, my head hurts. Well, she told me to go and buy this Zicam medicine. Supposedly, it nips the cold in the butt. I thought it was a nose spray kind of thing, but it actually comes in many forms....nose spray, chewable tablets, soft chews, rapid melt thingies...you get my point. It also comes in a variety of flavors. I chose the soft chews in strawberry.

After reading the directions (no orange juice for me tonight...apparently the acid can upset the stomach) I took one. It was like a starburst...less sweet and more chalky. Anyway, I hope that this cures whatever is ailing me. Or at least anything that might be thinking of ailing me.

I Do It Because

As I mentioned in the previous post, my blog has been sadly lacking these last few weeks. I claim that life is simply too busy for me to be posting at this time, but I think that is a fib I tell myself or more importantly that I tell the few people that regularly make a point to stop by here.

I began blogging because it seemed to be the "in" thing to do. And then I quickly warmed to the idea of using my blog as a journal of my every day life. Believe it or not, I do occassionally go back and re-read old posts. I've been at this blogging thing for a little over a year and a half. I can see how my writing has changed. I can see how I've changed. And most of the time that is a good thing.

And then there are days...even weeks...like these last ones that I wish I could truly use my blog for journaling all the inside thoughts. I can't. Too many of my real world friends and family stop by and take a peek. Don't get me wrong, I love that in a time where I'm so far away from them we can stay caught up and connected. There are just some things I wish I could put out there and not be judged because of.

I most enjoy blogging because you make connections with people. The majority of the time these are people that will never "know" you, but they build relationships and trust with you through the writing. They are an unbiased board off which to bounce ideas and get opinions. I like that.

And sometimes, I wish that my blog was completely anonymous. I wish I could write freely about the envy I feel for a friend who seems to have everything I want, about the fear I feel that I'm turning into someone I love but that I don't want to be like, that guy that just won't leave my head or heart alone, the dreams of going and doing something completely unlike me, or how alone I sometimes feel...even when I'm surrounded by people who care about me.

I could do it, but I'm chicken. I don't want to disappoint anyone. I don't want anyone to look at me with pity or to feel that they have to "fix" me. And lately, the things I need to blog about are the ones that I can't blog about. So, I'm keeping to myself for a while. I'm usually impulsive and act without completing the thought process, but for now I'm going to just ponder these thoughts on my own.

I know that answers and peace will come and that this time they have to come from within me.

Poor Blog

My poor blog! If you ran your finger across it big dust bunnies would stick to your finger.

Unfortunately, this isn't the night to dust if off.

I just felt like I should say something...so here it is.

Why are blonde jokes always about women? Are blonde men NOT as dumb as blonde women...not that I'm saying blonde women are dumb. But, still...I'm curious.

Far from profound but at least a date from this week.

What A Chore

For those of you who I haven't called to tell...last week someone stole my trash can. Yeah...you read that right. Someone STOLE (as in took without asking or returning) my TRASH CAN (that thing you put trash in).

In defense of the thief, I had left my trash can by the side of the road for a few days. What? We only have trash pick up two days a week and if I recall correctly that was a very busy week for me. Anyway, by the time I came home those nights it was dark and I didn't want to have to walk up the road in the dark to retrive my trash can. So, there set my trash can for at the most three days. I don't know...maybe that said to someone that it was up for grabs. Whatever the reason apparently someone needed it more than me.

And that brought me to my next problem...I had to go and buy a new trash can. I'm not really a trashy person, but frankly it was getting ripe under the sink and needed to be taken outside. My friend went with me to Wal-Mart and pushed the basket while I wheeled a monster of a trash can around. My old one (the stolen one) wasn't that big. It would hold one...possibly two depending on what was in the bag so I upgraded. It's huge. And green. (I'm just trying to help that mental picture out there!) Thankfully, it did fit in my car trunk and it's currently residing in the front yard.

Now, for the meat of this post. My least favorite chore is taking out the trash. Not that I injoy any of them, but trash is the worst. Believe it or not, but I only have about two years worth of trash hauling experience. While I was growing up my dad always took out the trash. I really believe that trash is an inheriantly male chore (no offense all you single gals out there...I'm a single gal too). I mean...think about it. Doesn't take out the trash dominate most young boys chore list? Don't most men (of the married variety) do the trash duty? Isn't there something manly in hauling a white plastic bag of trash to a smelly dumpster? Okay...maybe manly was pushing it, but my point is that trash seems to be a guy thing. And I hate that it is my thing now.

The gathering it up around the house isn't that bad and walking it outside to the trash can right off the porch isn't that bad. What I hate is wheeling that huge thing down to the road. I'm not sure how far it is from my porch to the edge of the road, but it's further than your average driveway. And, seriously, sometimes the trash smells. Are you getting the picture about why this is my least favorite chore?

Anyway, at least my new mean green trash can is bigger so the trips are fewer nowadays. And can you guess what chore I'm trying to put off by writing this post? I guess it's a lame dream to think the trash will sprout legs and walk itself down to the road, huh?
