NYC Saga...Continued (Act III)

Another big shot out to Deniece (who has been reading the comments but making none herself and is humbly pleased by the praise for her writing) for doing this guest blogger thing for me. And I got the final word...she WILL take questions and provide answers at the conclusion of the tale. Enjoy!

PS...this is my FAVORITE part of the whole trip!!!

Steffany actually stayed awake to make our sign for the next morning, and I fell asleep early. I actually went to bed very early and wound up waking up a little before 4am.
As soon as I woke up, I called downstairs to see if there was a transit strike. Unfortunately there was. (Later, you’ll see that this wasn’t as unfortunate as I thought) Great, how are we going to get all the way back to 57th St., the location of The General Motors Building? (Our hotel was between 95th and 96th streets.) This morning Steffany wanted to try to get on CBS’s The Early Show.

I watch the Today Show so I wasn’t quite as amped; but it was really important to Steff that we meet Dave Price and it wasn’t that big a deal to me, so we did the Early Show. Well, we get up and get dressed. Our plan is to walk as far downtown as we could before trying to find a cab. The cab would cost $10 per person (the rate because of the strike), so that would be $20 for us. We had walked just a few blocks when a man and a woman in a white van slowed down beside us and asked us where we were headed. Without thinking, I told them that we were headed to 57th St. They said they would take us there for $5 each. There wasn’t a cab in sight, and $10 definitely beats $20, so we hopped in their van and headed toward downtown.

Pause
I know what y’all are thinking, because I thought the same thing later that day. Oh my God! I got into a van with total strangers in the middle of New York City! However, I have to say, that the reputation that New Yorkers are rude and mean, is a total fallacy. There was never a time that I felt uncomfortable or the need to clutch my purse. Yes, everyone really keeps to himself or herself, and they don’t tip their hat and say “how do” like they do here in Podunk, Texas (which I’ve come to the conclusion is totally fake), but they are totally cool people.

> Play >
Along the way, we picked up a few other people who were also headed downtown. One guy had his business suit in a clothes bag. You could tell he was prepared to walk the long way down to 14th St. He was also pretty cute. We picked up another lady who used to teach at SMU in Dallas, so she knew all about Abilene, Wichita Falls, and MSU.

Pause
When people would ask us where we were from, which they did a lot, we would just say Texas. Then they would ask where in Texas, and when I said Wichita Falls, I always got blank looks. Steffany would say that she was from Abilene, and they would always say, “I’ve heard of it, but I don’t know where it is.” My guess is that they heard of Abilene because of country music.

> Play >
Anywho, we got down to 57th St. and figured out where we were supposed to meet for the Early Show, then we went to grab a little something to eat. We found a little deli/ supermarket. It was kind of unusual, so we just got a little something, and decided to eat later. We went back to the Early Show, and saw that there were people there now setting up things. The immediately asked us, “Are you guys here for the Early Show? When we told them that we were, they were so excited. They said that they didn’t know how many people would actually show up because of the strike. They invited us up for hot chocolate and apple cider. We immediately accepted, because it was so COLD.

Pause
Standing out in this cold for hours, was the coldest I have EVER been. It felt like the wind was blowing right past my clothes in through my skin. I was chilled to the bone. I love really cold weather and snow, but that’s only If I get to sit inside and look at it.

> Play >
We met the producer. He was really grateful that we were there, and he was really nice. He really liked our sign too. Actually everyone liked our sign. It made me feel really good, and kind of proud. Yes, Steffany actually made the sign (I fell asleep, remember). BUT we both brainstormed and came up with the idea.

We did meet Dave Price (he looks like the dad on Alvin and the Chipmunks) and we were on national television. It was a really cool experience to be on TV. After everything wrapped up, I was totally over CBS and the General Motors Building (along with their tightly wound employees).
We then waited about 5 minutes to go into FAO Schwartz, because we both wanted to get warm, use the bathroom, and see the $15,000 stuffed elephant. That’s right! This is an upscale toy store that also housed a $15,000 child size Porsche. After the doors were unlocked, there was a red carpet ceremony before we could get in. I was impressed by the pageantry, but annoyed at the pretension. I didn’t purchase anything, because cash flow was running low. Steffany purchased a gift for a baby shower, and then we left in search of breakfast.
We found a dinner on Madison Ave.

Pause
How cool are we that we ate on Madison Ave in Manhattan?

> Play >
We ordered our food, and Steff called her mom to ask about seeing us on television. I don’t remember exactly what I ordered, but I do remember that I got sausage. The breakfast sausage in NYC is so different from ours, it’s more like a cased link… sort of like a hot link. I’m being so descriptive, because this was the BEST sausage I have ever eaten. I can still taste it in my mind. Yes, I’m fully aware of how sad that is. No, I don’t care.

After breakfast and the world’s greatest sausage, Steffany and I went to Rockefeller Center. We saw all kinds of landmarks and stuff you see on TV. We also saw the giant Christmas tree. It looks bigger on TV. We also went and bought the most expensive chocolate at this Swiss chocolate boutique. Their bulk chocolate was $62 per pound. I found some chocolate bars and would up spending about $10 on 3 pieces of chocolate. I must say, it was very good chocolate, as I am a connoisseur. However, it was just a tourist thing; because in real life I’m just as happy with good old Hershey.

We took some more pictures, and we went into Saks 5th Ave. It was so pretentious, uppity, and reeked of snobbery. I LOVED IT! We went into Louis Vitton, and they didn’t even talk to us. It was so funny! We passed a man who was handing out red ribbons with a new fragrance on it. Steffany and I both got ribbons, because we knew that was the only thing we would be taking with us out of Saks 5th Ave. I saw a scarf for $595. Yes, a scarf-the-- little piece of fabric that goes around your neck when it’s cold. After Saks, we wandered around a little while, but I was so cold and very tired. Remember I got up a little before 4am, I had been walking everywhere, and it was now some time after noon. I was exhausted. Steffany asked me what I wanted to do, and I was completely honest. I told her that I wanted to go back to the hotel, and take a nap. I could tell she was annoyed, but I was so tired and I knew she wouldn’t hate me, so we went back to the hotel anyway. When we got my to the hotel, I put on my PJs, hoped in bed, and I was OUT. I had set my alarm for about 2:30pm, because I didn’t want to sleep the day away. After all, I was in NEW YORK CITY!!!!

When I woke up, Steffany and I talked about what we wanted to do, and we decided to go to the Time Warner Center and Central Park. We took a cab down to Columbus Circle. Along the way, our cab picked up another passenger. She was so cool. She was a songwriter. I asked her if she wrote anything we may have heard, and she said sure. She wrote Pieces of Me by Ashlee Simpson, Escape by Enrique Inglesias, and another one that I can’t remember. It was so cool to meet her.
We got to Columbus Circle and took a few pictures, because we had a really great view of the CNN tower. We went inside the Time Warner Center and went into William Sonoma. It was so pretty in there, and they had samples of the best mulled apple cider. Also, Steffany found some sort of cooking thermometer that she had been looking for to get her dad for Christmas.

<<> Play >
We left Time Warner and went across the street to Central Park. They were having a Christmas market with all sorts of different items. It was so cool. They had all kinds of jewelry, clothes, and iPod accessories.

Pause
I want an iPod. That’s it.

We walked around there for a while, and then we went into the park to take pictures. We also wanted to take pictures at Lincoln Center, because they had the most beautiful Christmas Tree. We headed across the street, and I decided that I wanted to take a picture in front of the Trump Tower.

Pause
The story I am now about to tell was the highlight of my trip. Read very carefully!

Ah ha...a cliff hanger!!! I promise that the next entry will be one you'll want to read. It involves a celebrity and a picture (that with D's permission I'll post too!).

NYC Experienced (Act II)

For those of you just tuning in and for those of you that are returning, the following is a recount of my New York trip from my friend and traveling buddy's perspective. I, for one, think she's a talented writer and I'm very much enjoying the story. Hopefully, you are too! (If you missed the first part scroll down a post or two or simply click here.)

Y’all are familiar with the term “butt crack of dawn,” right? Well, this was the first of two mornings that we would be up before the sun. We were scheduled to take a tour, so we had to get up early. We also got up a little earlier than we needed to, because we had to figure out the subway system. It was really easy to do, and I’m glad we did it on Monday, because that would be the last chance for us to experience it. (More on that later) I like riding the subway. The funny thing was that Steffany and I were the only ones talking. People really keep to themselves around here, so it was just me and Steffany chattering away in our not so discreet accents. I wonder what our fellow patrons were thinking as we sat there talking. We arrived at Times Square, but had to walk a few blocks to 48th St. to get to where the Party Shuttle Tour was going to meet. On the way, we stopped at Starbucks (there’s one, sometimes two, every block).

Pause
Steffany and I tried not to eat at chain restaurants that we could eat here at home, but to me Starbucks didn’t count. Steffany said that it did count as a chain, but didn’t fight me on it. She was really great about my frequent Starbucks stops. In fact, anyone who knows what I’m like sans morning coffee would also be willing to give in on this one.

> Play >
We arrive at the shuttle where we meet Tom, our tour guide. Tom was absolutely wonderful, and Steffany and I both just loved him to pieces! When we first met Tom, my gaydar went through the roof. I thought who better do show us around New York City than a gay man that has lived her for over 30 years. For those of you who don’t know, I’m a total fag hag. Anywho… the driver, Ron, gave me grief, because I was wearing my Dallas Cowboys sweatshirt. Again, for those of you who don’t know, I love the Dallas Cowboys more that I love my own family. If you knew my family, you’d understand… anyways... The tour was awesome. We went to Strawberry Fields, which was amazing to see in person. We also saw were John Lennon was shot. It was very intense.

When we got back onto the shuttle Steffany pointed and said, “Isn’t he cute?!” I didn’t know who she was talking about, because she was pointing to the old man with his wife in the seat in front of us. “Who are you talkin’ about?” I questioned. “Him,” she replied. WHAT? Steffany was in deed pointing to the man in front of us! I turned to her and said, “Steffany, what is it with you and guys on Social Security?!” If there’s one thing I know for sure, it’s the fact that Steffany and I will never fight over a guy, (not just because we’re best buddies) because she has the weirdest taste in men. I think she as an inner Anna Nicole Smith… without the nudity, drugs, TrimSpa, and extreme mental disorders…. But I digress. He and his wife were very nice people as was everyone else on the tour. There were people from everywhere. It was great!

The most fun for me was the pier. We ate lunch, bought souvenirs, and took pictures in front of the Brooklyn Bridge. Steffany ate a Nathan’s hotdog. I didn’t know what the big deal was until she told me that they sponsor that huge hotdog eating contest. I was a little disappointed that I didn’t know that, because I would have eaten there instead of the dinky little Chinese fast food place. We took a couple pictures, and then we headed back to the shuttle, because we were off to ride the Staten Island Ferry.
The ferry ride was really windy and very cold, but I thought it was great, because we past by Ellis Island and Liberty Island. I got so excited when we saw the Statue of Liberty, that I took so many pictures. Now, I regret all of the pictures I took of lady liberty, because I have about 983 useless shots that I could have used for something else.

After Staten Island, we saw Ground Zero. Actually, we saw a big fence with plastic on it surrounding Ground Zero. They are constructing the new building and memorial site, so we didn’t get to see much. All I remember about that was that it was really cold, and I had to pee really bad. However, we did see the church where the 9/11 rescue workers stayed. It was really beautiful and awe-inspiring. After that stop, we went back to Times Square were we said goodbye to Tom, Ron, and our fellow tourists. Steffany even got her picture taken with Tom.

When the tour was over, Steffany and I went back to Chinatown on a mission to find some Louis Vitton for some friends of hers. I have to say that this was one of the low points of the trip for me. I had been up since 5am, it was extremely cold, I was tired as hell, and let’s face it, it’s not like the purses were for my friends, so I couldn’t have cared less. It was cold and everyone and their mama was trying to shove some useless junk down our throats. I can still hear them in my nightmares… “You buy! You buy!” “Twenty-five dollar! Special for you!” OH MY GOD! LEAVE ME ALONE! However, I’m not gonna play it off like I didn’t get anything. I walked away with a beautiful cashmere (yeah right, it was acrylic) scarf.

After we left Chinatown, we took the subway back to Times Square to grab some dinner. Yes, I’m fully aware that we could have eaten in Chinatown, but I wasn’t in the mood for Kung Pao anything. We ended up at a Paks, Pacs, …something that started with a “P” Wholesome Foods eatery. I had a slice of pizza, a macaroon, and a Pepsi. Wholesome my ass! After eating, we looked around Time Square a little more, and bought some of the more expensive souvenirs, which I kept for myself. (I gave my friends those cheap ass I heart NY t-shirts. Ha Ha) We were both really tired at this point, so we took the Subway back to the Hotel Newton. I must say, the staff here was great, and I recommend them to anyone traveling to the city. It’s nothing fancy, but it was safe and clean. We had to get up early the next morning, so we just watched a little TV and went to bed.

For the record...I do not have a thing for guys on social security. I find men attractive. I can't help it if some of them happen to be older than I am. Believe me, there are plenty of not so attractive older men out there too.

Pinch Protection

Voted best Irish joke of 2005!

John O'Reilly hoisted his beer and said,"Here's to spending the rest of me life between the legs of me wife! That won him the top prize at the pub for the best toast ofthe night! He went home and told his wife, Mary, "I won the prize for the Best toast of the night!" She said, "Aye, did ye now. And what was your toast?" John said, "Here's to spending the rest of me life sitting in church beside me wife.""Oh, that is very nice indeed, John!" Mary said. The next day, Mary ran into one of John's drinking buddies on the street corner. The man chuckled leeringly and said, "John won the prize the other night at the pub with a toast about you, Mary." "Aye, he told me, and I was a bit surprised myself. You know, he's only been there twice in the last four years. Once he fell asleep, and the other time I had to pull him by the ears to make him come."

Happy St. Patrick's Day!!!

New York City...Explained

For those few of you out there that were patiently waiting for "the rest of the story" from Deniece well here it is. I'm happy to say that it was a very good recount of what happened. And I personally think D has writing talents that are amazing! So, sit back and enjoy. (This will appear in parts because it's very long. )

For at least the past 7-10 years of my life, I have wanted to live in New York City. Sure, I had never been, but it just looked like so much fun on TV. I desperately wanted to be Carrie sipping on a Cosmopolitan at the Rainbow Room or Monica relaxing with an oversized cup of coffee at Central Perk (which doesn’t actually exist, but you get the picture). So when Steffany and I started seriously discussing a trip to New York, I jumped at the chance. I had to see if I, a girl from Graham Texas, pop. 8986, could really by all right in The Big Apple.

When we arrive in New York, my immediate thought its, “OH MY GOD! I’M IN NEW YORK CITY!” I was just surging with so much excitement!

Pause
In my family and most circles of friends, and am the one who always takes pictures. I take more pictures that anyone in the whole world… or so I thought. Right when we came off the plane, I heard a sweet southern voice say, “Could you take our picture.” It was Steffany asking the first of many strangers to capture this Kodak moment in our lives. To tell the truth, it did get old, but in hindsight, I’m glad she took so many pictures that I can make copies of!

When we arrived at the hotel, we didn’t have much time until we had to be at the Broadway Show. So we put away our luggage. Actually, Steffany put away her luggage, and I just threw mine around my side of the room. I’m a little sloppy, but Steffany loves me despite that. J We were really hungry and couldn’t wait until after the show; so we grabbed a quick bite from Subway, and took it back to the room. Just for the record, I have to ask, what the hell kind of a Subway doesn’t have Ranch dressing. Hello… this is still America!

Anyways, we got ready, and both of us looked very lovely if I do say so myself. We hailed a cab; which neither one of us really knew how to do, but I just raised my hand like they do in the movies and it totally worked! I felt so cool. Yes, I realize that millions of people do this everyday in every corner of the world, but it was a first for me, so just humor me. We drove into Times Square to 42nd St, and it was the most amazing sight. Times Square did not disappoint at all. It looks just like it does on TV. There are advertisements everywhere and neon as far as the eye could see. We got out of the cab and walked just a little ways down to our theater to see Beauty and the Beast.

Pause
Steffany and I had been planning this trip since the summer, and we booked the show tickets along with our airline tickets. Therefore, when The Great Oprah Winfrey announced the December 1st opening of the Broadway production of The Color Purple (my absolute favorite movie in the entire world), I was a little disappointed that it was too late to be able to see it. However, I must say, Beauty and the Beast was wonderfully enchanting.

> Play >
We had great seats, and sat beside great people, a lot of which were also from other corners of the country taking in Christmastime in New York City. I sat next to a man who was treating his daughter to her first Broadway show. It was so sweet. He bought her everything from those ridiculously expensive silk roses to a cute little charm bracelet that featured all of the characters. It was just very sweet. The play itself was wonderful. Not only was the acting and singing amazing, but I was very impressed by the production of it all. The way they changed the scenery and stage was really awesome. I would have loved to have seen another show just to see if everything works the same way.

After our charming evening at the theater (picture me saying that with a haughty British accent), we had a death defying taxi ride back to the hotel. I absolutely loved this cab driver, because he was the embodiment of every stereotype that people believe about cab drivers. He was even wearing a turban, which was so cool. That’s something you just don’t see in Wichita Falls. Anywho… we got back to the hotel, changed, and went next door to The Key West Diner where I had the best bacon cheeseburger in the whole world. It was pretty much empty, so the owner paid a lot of attention to us. He was really nice, and we actually ate at that diner more that once. After dinner, we are both very stuffed and very sleepy. When we got back to the hotel. I took a shower, and went to bed. I was out as soon as my head it the pillow. It was nice.

That basically sums up day one. I'll post more tomorrow night. Oh, and if you have any questions, Deniece will be holding a question and answer session at the conclusion of the story!

Venting

The title isn't creative, but I just don't have creative juices flowing.

Yesterday afternoon my mom and I had a major "discussion" about my responsibilities as a member of this household (no matter how much I don't wish to be a member of this household at the moment). I thought I was doing a great job of hiding my resentment of my current circumstances but apparently I wasn't. Some of the things my mom had to say were pretty hard to hear...not because they were hurtful but because they were true. This is the one place where I can vent my feelings about this whole situation, but even I'm tired of my whining.

So...moving on.

This past weekend I went to visit some of my old college friends. It was fantastic! I had so much fun...and that was just what the doctor ordered. I got to have lunch with D. Then we looked through all my NYC pictures (which she loved because there were so many great ones and she did most of the picture taking and I did most of the picture posing) and we talked about the future installments of Deniece's Take On NYC. I really am excited about this post (shameless plug here) because she has such writing talents and wit. It should be enjoyable, but might not be available on the blog until next week sometime.

I went to see Failure To Launch with some friends. Cute movie and really hot main character. Hmmm...sorry. I got sidetracked by thoughts of Matthew. One word of caution...there is a Terry Bradshaw naked scene. A saggy naked kind of scene. Just warning you.

There was also a group party that was a lot of fun. It's always so nice to visit with old friends and people that you don't get to see a lot of anymore. Christian and Jake and I had a particular fun time because we got hooked on some love compatibility sight. Basically you enter your name and someone (typically of the opposite sex but I had some high percentages with some of the same sex) else's name and it tells you how compatible you are in the love department. It's kind of scary how easily amused one can be in the middle of the night. (Again, S...sorry for being so loud. Hope we didn't keep you and the hubby too long!)

Well, it seems like a waste of blog space to talk about cleaning the bathroom and laying in bed watching tv so I'll wrap it up.

My 100th

This is my 100th post. I think that's pretty amazing considering I wasn't sure I'd even stay faithful to my little blog.

I had a great day today visiting with my friend D. We were roommates in college and the connection just gets stronger. I miss her like crazy now that I'm not living in Wichita Falls anymore. Trouble just isn't the same!

Anyway, D has written a little write up about our trip to New York. I'm excited to have her give her thoughts on this trip. Last I heard it was a little over nine pages in Word so it'll probably appear in parts. I can't wait!!!

Survivor Recap

I have to admit that while I do think Shane is one brick short of a load he does make for some entertaining tv watching. I love it how he just goes off the deep end on everyone...and always just out of the blue. I wouldn't want to be in an alliance with him either. Despite all of that...the funniest Shane-ism last night was when he bummed a cigarette off that guy. I'm telling you the faces he made were the funniest thing...a little gross but still pretty funny...especially when he tried to smoke the filter.

I told you the boys club would crumble. And didn't Sally get out of that in a nice way? I think she'll turn on her tribe the minute the merge happens. I mean, if someone saved me from certain eviction from the island I'd be indebted to them too. She'll flip...mark my words.

In other news, this week has been very relaxing and there was a certain amount of pampering too. I got my hair cut, got a wax, got my nails done, had lunch with a friend, and went on a mini shopping spree. I know...that spoiled thing sounds really true. And this weekend I'm heading off to visit some friends. A road trip is just what I need to round out my week of pampering. But starting next week, I'll have to really get busy with the ordinary kind of things. Ahh how quickly time flies when you're having fun.

A few weeks ago I sent out an email to friends and family asking them to describe me in one word only. This is for a scrapbooking layout I'm working on. Anyway, I was surprised by the quick response of some (my grandfather was one of the first!) and also the words that were chosen. It really was a humbling experience. I thought I'd share a few of my favorites and then if you feel so compelled, please add your own one word in the comments box.

Burn Baby Burn

"Burn ladies...feel that burn!"...that's what the new water aerobics teacher at the new water aerobics place kept saying tonight. Well lady...I'm burning all over!

Technically, I think that exercise is way over rated. Yeah, I know it's good for you and you'll probably live longer and get into size 2 jeans, but sometimes it's just not fun. I exercise for those reasons...not out of some giddy happy fulfilling feeling I get when I'm done. So, about a year ago I joined up at the local YMCA for some water aerobics. I really do have a fond place in my heart for all those older women....they are great! But, yesterday, a friend told me about another health club that offered water aerobics at A.) a lower cost (girl on a budget here) B.) 30 minutes earlier than the Y (this makes a difference when you still have to come home and fix dinner or shower) and C.) "the workout is better."

So, I called this morning and asked if I could come in for a trial run with this place and see how I liked it. The lady said sure. She sounded young and really friendly. I keep harping on this older/younger thing, but you'd just have to get water aerobics to understand. Most of the people that do this (not saying all) but most are older women. Anyway, she said to come on in tonight at 5pm. There were several things that I noticed right away that I liked. First, the pool is only 31/2 feet deep. I'm used to a no impact deep end workout. This doesn't get my heart rate moving very fast. Second, the ladies are still kind of older, but the instructor is my age. Third, the hot tub is also 3 1/2 feet deep. Fourth, the pool is heated. The urge to exercise isn't strong anyway with me, but when I have to get into water that feels like it came directly from the Arctic that urge disappears all together. So, I get in and things start moving. And I mean moving.

She had us running, frog jumping, kicking ourselves in the butt (literally), lunging. Then we started the cardio part...arms and legs moving. I'd never worked out like this before. This woman meant business. Just when I thought it was time to catch my breath the real torture began. We started to work our thighs and legs. I'm going to have thighs that can crack a nut in six weeks if I keep going there! The instructor kept saying that if it wasn't burning then I wasn't working hard enough. I wanted to ask her if she'd call the fire department because as much burn as I was feeling I was sure I was on fire. My legs were kind of jello-y when I got out. But the workout really was better. And there lies a slight problem. I'm going to change gyms. As much as I hate to leave my teacher buddies at the Y, I really do need to be at this new place. It's more workout (you know since exercise was my main goal) and it's cheaper and well everything just works.

I still haven't opened the jump rope...I'm aiming for tomorrow. But tonight I don't think I could have jumped rope if my life had depended on it. At least my legs aren't still shaking and thankfully the burn has turned to a dull ache in my upper thighs. Oh the things I do for the sake of being healthy.

Weekend In Review

I'm posting in the morning. This isn't that unusual. I've been doing it for several weeks now. But this time I'm doing it at home, in the living room, in the comfy chair, and still in my pajamas. Yep, my full time subbing gig is over. It was neat to be in the classroom for eight weeks, but it's nice to be vacationing at home for the next couple of weeks. (Details to come on the subbing part.)

My family went out of town this past weekend to visit my grandparents. We have four birthdays in February so we always get together for a big "birthday bash" weekend. This one was really nice, as all eleven members of the family were present and accounted for...that doesn't happen often in our family. My birthday wasn't one of the ones being celebrated so I didn't get to open presents but there was cake. Cake makes everything good :o)

I slept late this morning, but I've got several things on a list that I need to get accomplished before I head back to subbing after Spring Break. First on the list, laundry. Going sans unmentionables in the house is fine, but I've got to get out and get some groceries and run a few errands today. Gotta have unmentionables for that. Also, clean my room. It's a horrid mess in there. Hopefully, I can squeeze some scrapbooking time in this week. I'm sadly falling behind.

I'm going to start jump roping. How fun huh? Last week there was a jump rope for heart thing at school and I did it for three minutes but I discovered that I could use a little more cardio in my workout routine than just swimming. So, I'm buying a jump rope and we'll see what happens.

I know this is all kind of jumbled up, but it's better than nothing!

Survivor Recap

Believe it or not, I don't have much to report. I think the kiddos (or baloobas) passed on their runny noses and headaches so I'm keeping this short and sweet.

Bobby was voted off. I would have gone for Shane (since he is very volatile), but Bobby was pretty much a free loader. As much as this pains me to say, I do agree with Shane. I know...lets take a moment and all have a shiver together. Bobby would have turned on their tribe in a heartbeat if he thought it would have gotten him further in the game. Good call guys!

Bobby and Bruce spent a magical night in the outhouse bonding over a bottle of wine. Okay, this I found funny. Here are two guys (pretty much the opposite of each other) chugging down on the group's reward bottle of wine and doing it on the pot. That just strikes me as hilarious!

There was fish cutting. I think they said that they had about 100 pounds of raw uncooked fish. They take it back to camp and the rains have washed away almost everything...including their fire pit. Their solution...let's eat raw fish. I wouldn't think that was very sanitary, but it didn't slow them down. There was Shane chewing on his fish carcass like it was a rack of baby back ribs. ICK.

The beans didn't sit well over at the other tribe. Poor Austin...nothing like having gastrointestinal problems out in the jungle with leaves as your only choice of bottom wipers.

Survivor Question of the Week: How did they get that big head immunity thing into that glass bottle out on Exile Island? And how do you keep something that big hidden from your tribe mates when you're in such close proximity?

Care Packages

When I first started blogging, I really thought that I'd lose interest really quiCkly. I had a few friends that blogged and I figured that they would probably stop by from time to time, but that for the most part it would be me navigating blOgland. Thankfully, that wasn't the case. I really am amazed when I think about all the different people I've met (okay I haven't met them but I feel somewhat connected to them) through blogging. Well, toNight I dedicate this post to one such individual....~deb.

~deb is someone that at first comment I took to be a smart ass and I got my feathers ruffled because I didn't understand her...the whole Texan/New Yorker thing coming on the heels of a trip I'd taken. But, she had an interesting perspective on things so I kept reading. And then I discovered that I likeD her. While I've never met ~deb in person or had human contact of any sort, I'd feel safe in calling her a blogging friend.

Well, a few weeks ago, on a random stop over to her piece of blogland, I noticed that she'd asked a question and said if you answered correctly you'd get a prize. I thought she was joking, but nevertheless I knew the answer (pleading the fifth on how I knew the answer because I have a reputation to protect) and in a haughty tone (still under the impression that this was all a great way to have fun) demanded my prize. Well, the next thing I know I've got a response comment asking for my home address. Now I have to be honest. I was hesitant in giving out this information to a virtual stranger but I live at home with a father that owns a riffle and down here in Texas you're pretty much born in the NRA so I figured if she did decide to send NY goons after me I'd be okay. So I gave it out...okay the carrOt of getting something in the mail was a deciding factor too. Sue me....I love mail. Anyway, after ~deb has this information, she lets me know that the prize is related to the question. It's only fair to tell you that the question had something to do with s-e-x. I was leery about what might be arriving in the mail...especially after she told me not to open it up unless I was alone. So, I waited and waited. I'm not patient so I send ~deb a little comment about "where is my prize you promised?" and her response was that it was coming and that I could wear it in New Orleans. Huh?

Well, the other day, here is my package waiting for me in the mailbox. It's smaller than I'd pictured but size doesn't matter...most of the time. Thankfully, my mom wasn't home so I didn't have to sneek off to my bedroom to open it. I cracked up when I finally got the box opened and the packaging taken out. Eighteen of the gaudiest Mardi Gras beaded necklaces came out. And attached to the necklaces were these little plastic pouches that said "Ready To Roll" and "Prepared To Party!" Yes, they had soMething inside the pouch. I've left some clues as to what that something was hidden in this post. Anyway, I cracked up. What was I going to do with all these prizes? (Yes, ~deb...I know what to do with them but I'm not umm active at the moment so....how long can I store these babies?..lol)

Well, like any good friend, I took them to a party (totally unrelated to anything having to do with my prizes) and shared them with friends. Everyone had a great laugh. We even decided that once you've "worn" the prize then you have to wear the necklace (sans plastic pocket thingy) to church (where the most of us would be seen). So far, no one has been seen around town sporting the necklace. It was a great little gift and did a lot to lift my spirits on a day that hadn't been the greatest. So, just conSider this fair warning to all of you who might be thinking of answering a question over at ~deb's place...the consequences obviously will match the crime!!!

Thanks ~deb :o)

I've Got Mail!!!

There was a package waiting for me today when I got home! Oh, Deb, you're so sweet and thoughtful. I'm on my way to water aerobics so I can't fully describe how delighted I am with my present, but I will in the very near future.

Survivor Recap

I bet a few of you thought I might have forgotten...not true. Just running a few days behind.

Oh the naive little souls over at La Mina. They think they have this perfect little alliance going on between the men. There is no way that four will make it to the final anything. I'd be surprised if they survive the merge. Does anyone else think they shot themselves in their collective foot by voting off Ruth Marie? Loyalty is a big component of this game. Namely you have to be loyal to yourself. And then you can be cautiously loyal to your alliance. Anyone with an eyeball could see that Ruth Marie would have been extremely loyal to her alliance (to the point of being disloyal to herself) right up until the point that she wasn't useful any longer. I swear...that is what makes me so nuts...these people do not think beyond that day. You have to think like you're going to make it to the final two and plan accordingly. If you don't then you end up in the mess the guys are going to find themselves in. That'd be my plan if I was on Survivor. But I'll never be on Survivor. First, I don't do dirt and bugs (or reptiles). Second, I don't do fish either...any kind of fish (except Gorton garlic herb fillets and I doubt that they'd offer that as a reward). Third, I do not like the idea of going without a shower and being able to wash my private parts. Well, my list could go on and on...I'm much more qualified to be a watcher than a participant.

Do you think they spent much money on Jeff's wardrobe? He is always wearing khaki pants and blue shirt? Am I the only one watching that closely? Boy when I watch tv I watch tv.

I love what is happening over at Casaya. Ceirre should be set if she'll just bide her time and let the group of four destroy themselves. The alliance of Courtney, Danielle, Aras, and Shane (the moron) will probably go by the way of the Casa de Charmine. That was the funniest thing! Anyway, I'm kinda changing my tune about Shane (nope...I do still think he's a scary moron) but he is kind of fun to watch. He adds some dynamic to the group.

It should start getting interesting!! Let me know what you think!

Power Of The Card

I'd bet that a lot of people dread going to the mailbox. Why? There is probably going to be a bill for something in there. And surrounding that will probably be some junk mail, maybe a catalogue. There just isn't anything of much interest waiting in most of our mailboxes. But, oh the pleasant surprise when there is a piece of snail mail from an old friend!

I love to send mail. Snail mail to be more accurate. It's probably my favorite form of communication. Yeah, I do send email (a few people probably wish I'd stop!) and I can talk on the phone (I just don't like to. My parents sure were glad that I skipped right over that teenage phase...lol.) but I love to send mail. I send a lot of cards and letters and occasionally there is the care package.

You might think I'm just a really sweet person for sending mail to others, but I have a hidden motive. I like to buy cards. I'm a card nut. If there was a fetish involving greeting cards I'd probably have to claim it. I could spend hours in a card shop. And there doesn't have to be a particular reason to buy a card. I don't limit myself to birthdays and holidays. I learned early on in college that a trip to the campus mailbox could make or break my day (or week or month or semester). There is just something not nice about opening an empty mailbox. Also, there is the whole element of surprise. You're not expecting a sweet note or snickery card to be there waiting for you. I don't always have the element of surprise because I can't keep anything a secret and I usually spill the beans and warn the recipient that it's coming. But, there are times when I restrain myself and just wait for the reply. I love it when I'm sending a care package and the post office guy asks if I'd like delivery confirmation. I just smile and say that I'll know when they get it.

I haven't made a list in a while (and in honor of this post) I thought I'd list a few of the saying on some of my favorite cards.

Front: A tall flagpole with a big pair of undies flying.
Inside: Congratulations on your big ass achievement.

Front: When you're feeling down just do what I do...
Inside: Make everyone else around you miserable!

Front: Happy Birthday (completely white background with black typewriter font)
Inside: They say the generic brand cards are just as good as name brand.

Front: Picture of Paul Revere and some Revolutionary soldiers
Inside: So apparently being a minute man used to be a good thing.

Front: A guy in prison striped black and white with a ball and chain
Inside: Enough about me...where did your parents go wrong?

Front: Cruise ship and paradise looking stuff and If it were MY birthday I'd take all my friends on an all-expenses-paid cruise to an EXOTIC island.
Inside: But that's just me. I'm sure your little cake and ice cream thing will be just fine.

And those are just a few. I figure that if I'm laughing out loud in the store then the person who gets the card will probably crack a smile at the mailbox.

So, as I eagerly await the arrive of my "care" package, I challenge you to take some time and send someone a little happiness through the mail!

Under The Gunn

Have you ever been attracted to someone and you just couldn't explain it? Well, I have one. One that I'm kinda embarrassed to admit.

I think Tim Gunn (Project Runway) is totally hot.

I know...I know. I can't explain it, but I'm certainly glad that it's always on at bedtime. He's just too cute. Maybe it's the white hair? Or that voice? Hmm I don't know, but I sure do enjoy whatever it is.

***Note to SNA: Today while I was out shopping I found Post-It Note brand note cards! How cool is that, but since I'm trying to limit myself I didn't buy any...today. I think it might be time for an intervention...lol.

For You Or Me?

I began my blogging adventure about eight months ago. I never thought I'd enjoy it so much. I figured that I'd faithfully write a few posts and then I'd start to slip. That is how it's always been with journaling I did in diaries. But, much to my surprise and delight, blogging was something that I quickly took a liking to doing. I usually blog once a day and I visit others' blogs at least once a day too. It's pretty addictive.

Lately though, I've begun to question why I blog. This is a question that I had when I first started too. I blog because I like to exercise my writing skills and also to record the ins and outs of my everyday life. But, am I writing for me or for you?

I think that when I first started out (and didn't have any readers) it was easy to make my posts personal. I wasn't writing to impress...simply to ponder and reflect on my life. And frankly, I was in a transition time in my life. Being able to write about the events (when I wasn't always able to talk about them to people in my real life) was really helpful to me. But then a few people became regulars (and I became a regular on their blog) and the type of post changed. I've never made stuff up to post...all this craziness really is my life, but some of the personal did start slipping in favor of posts that would be more entertaining. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

There are a few blogs that I read that just simply provide entertainment and I really enjoy those. Sometimes it's nice to just read good writing and make snickery (that's my new favorite word!) comments. There are some blogs that I read for an educational purpose. They keep me up to date on the goings on in the world. I'll be the first to confess that I'm not a person that watches the news or reads the newspaper. So, I'm thankful that there are blogs out there that satisfy that need. There are a couple of blogs that warm my heart because they are excellent accounts of faith. My faith is important to me so I get a very real blessing from reading them. And, last but not least, there are a few blogs that just keep me up to date with friends...especially those friends who are far away.

So, from now on, I'm going to try and balance my blog. I'm sure a few purely for your entertainment value posts will surface. And more posts that are of a more personal nature will also be coming. No matter what type of post ends up here, I hope that you'll continue to drop in and leave me comments. No matter how outrageous, funny, or full of advice I appreciate them all.

Not A Sport For Siblings

So, the Olympics have been on lately. Tonight, while waiting for Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy to come on, I watched a little ice dancing. That is a very beautiful and somewhat erotic sport. The partners are taking dance moves and putting them on the ice. It's amazing. I'm not what you'd call a natural born dancer...trust me...my gyrations to music when on one is looking would not be considered dancing. Anyway, back to ice dancing, there are lifts and twists and well all kinds of things that involve getting up close and personal with your partner. So wouldn't you agree that having your sibling for a partner might be awkward?

Kerr/Kerr is a brother and sister ice dancing team. They looked very nice out on the ice. Their moves were clean and they didn't make a mistake. But umm there just seems to be something weird sliding between your brother's legs. Maybe it's the fact that I'm an only child and I can't grasp the concept of having a sibling. Maybe I'm just looking at this from a really snickery point of view.

Either way...they did a good job, but I don't think I could get out there with my sibling.

It Smells Like Snow

It smells like snow today. For those of you whom the novelty of snow has worn off, you've probably forgotten the smell of snow. Allow me to remind you.

We don't see snow very often in Texas. And we always know when it's on it's way. There is a smell. When the air is extremely crisp and the wind settles deep into your bones that's when you smell snow. It's a different smell than rain...deeper, richer.

I'd bet that you're thinking I'm crazy, but it's true.

Yesterday after school another teacher and I had after school duty on the patio. I sniffed the air and smiled. She looked at me and said "Don't you just love the smell of snow?" It's not just me...we can smell it.

Today was a frigid 29 today. This morning as I left the house there were tiny freezies floating in the air. It may not turn into snow and leave my town covered in a blanket of white, but the smell was there. The wonderful fresh smell of snow.

Survivor Recap

I love Survivor! I do so enjoy it when the people that think they are so "in control" are voted out and its a complete shock to them.

Okay, there were only a few things of real interest from last night.

First, let's all be thankful that Cierre was covered. I don't know about you, but seeing her ample bosom falling out of her bathing suit was just too much last week. This is a family type show!

Second, SHANE IS A MORON. And now the moron has a seat. I was a little disappointed that they won the immunity challenge because I'd love to see Shane go. He was too funny when he said "This is Shane's thinking seat." Again...what moron.

Third, I found it very funny that after the other tribe voted to send Bruce back to Exile Island and the torrential rains started they wanted to stop and remember Bruce. They were all warm and dry in their tarped tent and poor Bruce is huddling up with a rock over his head. I'm so not cut out for Survivor!!

Fourth, Hahahahaha Misty. Flirting got her no where.

Okay, those of you that watch Survivor let me know what you thought. Maybe at Merge we can pick who we think are going to be the final two and then the Sole Survivor...what do you think?

Matters Of The Heart

Our family had some disheartening news given to us on Wednesday. I have very conflicted emotions regarding this and I always feel better when I can put them down on paper (or on the screen) and process them all in an organized fashion.

Several weeks ago, my great grandmother (who is living with my grandparents) noticed that her legs had started to swell. Her doctors assumed that it was related to some medication so they switched her doses, but the swelling continued. Then the pain started. After several tests, the news was not good. She has fluid build up that the doctors are certain will eventually (within the year) move up her body and finally surround her heart. When this happens several things could happen...all of which will end her life. Her daughter (my great aunt) works in the medical profession and said that she doesn't think she'll make it till her birthday (June). This is just one of many things that are wrong with Gran. She has begun showing signs of Alzheimer's. She has a heart condition. I can't help but wonder if the news was devastating for her...or brought relief.

And here lies my confusion. I love my Gran. I'm the first great grandchild so I have a very special connection with her. She loves when I write to her (and I do love to write!). She used to sit with me at the huge dining table and read everything I wrote. She always asked me to write to her...even if it was just about my goings and comings. I haven't written in a long time. Her eyes are very bad. For a while I'd type them out in an extra large font, but lately I've stopped all together. When I turned 21 her diamond earrings that my great grandfather gave her were passed down to me. Every year for Christmas I got crocheted house shoes and pot holders. I love her. But, in the last few years, she has become grouchy, judgmental, and mean. She isn't the Gran I remember.

I'm feeling both emotions...but mainly just relieved. Along with that comes shame. Shouldn't I be angry that death is coming for her? Shouldn't I want to cry and beg God not to take her? I don't. I'm relieved that her pain and suffering will be over. I'm relieved that the pressure and burden will no longer be on my grandparents.

I feel a sense of sadness. I feel loss, but not as keenly because the Gran I know and love has already gone. I know I'll grieve. But today...I just feel relieved.

I'm Addicted!

I hear that the first step in over coming an addiction is to admit that you're addicted. Well...I'm addicted. To posty notes. Yep, those little sticky sheets of paper. I'm not sure that I realized this was an addiction until I stepped into the classroom full time. I have sticky notes everywhere!

In the books.
On grade papers.
On papers to be graded.
Notes to myself.
Things I need to get done for the day.
Addresses and phone numbers.

Oh and did I mention that I'm a perfectionist about most things? If a word is misspelled (lets get serious...it usually is) I'll rip off the top note and I just can't describe the feelings that coarse through me when I think about that whole 4x4 space that is mine to use.

And my family is very supportive of my habit. For Christmas I got about four sticky note sets. Apple, S, shoe shaped ones. Ones that have cute little sayings on them. The kind that pharmaceutical reps give out (thanks Aunt D!). Anyway, at least I'm stocked up.

I need help.

Viva Valentine!

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

Here's a little side story for you.

Beware The Sucker:
Boy, how embarrassing would this be? You have a large heart sucker that you're just going to town on. It's filling your mouth with the sweet taste of strawberries and your saliva glands are producing over-time. Then you read something funny and a giggle escapes...right along with a bunch of that saliva that tastes like strawberries. Now you have little sugary drop stains on your shirt (and if you're of the female persuasion along the curve of your boobs) that you're frantically trying to dry before people see you. Boy, I'm sure glad that wasn't me.

Moral: Just swallow...it makes life so much more easier.

Boys Stink

Tonight was a disaster. It should have just been a good fun time with a friend, but nope...it ended with that guy going home early and alone and me going home later and frustrated.

Friend C and I were supposed to go and see a movie (Tristan And Isolde) tonight. She called last night and asked about inviting some guys. Okay, this was supposed to be a girlie night, but okay...I like guys. After much debate she decided to just leave it a girlie night. No pressure to look hot or anything...just a night out with the girl.

Somewhere between then and now, she flaked and changed her mind.

Tonight, about 20 minutes before we're supposed to meet, she calls and says "Umm...remember what we talked about last night? Well, I invited someone." Wonderful. Guy C is coming. I think guy C is pretty nice. I just am going to feel like the third wheel because friend C used to (probably still does) have a thing for guy C. I bring up my third-wheelness and she suggests calling that guy. I'm all for that, but there is a tricky line to walk because friend C fancies herself in love or lust or something with that guy. I follow the rule of chicks before dicks so therefore caution is required. So, she calls that guy. This is probably where the night began its slow painful death.

He was curious as to who would be there (she told him friends) and he then asks if she'd thought about inviting anyone else. First jerky move of the night...I'm not good enough to see a movie with? Shake it off girl...you've got a man to snag.

That guy and I are the first to arrive at the theater. He was extremely polite and so handsome in jeans! I began to think that things might have been umm stretched. He seemed happy enough to be seeing a movie in the same theater as me. Boy, girls in lust see only what they want to.

We sit down (friend C and her "date") between that guy and me. She mumbles sorry and I'm beginning to wonder if this was a horrible set up on friend C's part. We watch the movie. Somewhere during the movie that guy gets up and leaves. What? Yeah, he didn't care for the chick flick so he goes to another theater and watches what is playing there. Jerky move two...leaving the scene of a very bad set-up while leaving other helpless victims stranded in the third wheel position.

After the movie, he walks out and is again friendly....don't fall for it sister. The by now sickening duo want to go to Starbucks. That guy mentions he is hungry. I suggest IHOP. There is coffee and food...brilliant idea I think. That guy says I'll go anywhere. I begin thinking maybe there can be some salvaging done. I think that here is where the final plunge of the death to romantic feelings sword was inflicted. I wasn't sure about the location of the Starbucks. Friend C takes the opportunity to make sure I look very ridiculous because how long have I lived in this town? I hate coffee...can you blame me for not knowing where a COFFEE shop is located? That guy promptly decided he's not that hungry after all.

So, instead of having coffee and or a dessert at the Starbucks (which I now know for certain is located on B.G Road) he just leaves. Oh, well not before instructing us to be careful and have a good night. Jerky thing three...not knowing it would have been a better night if he'd not ditched me. I say me and mean me because by now it's painfully obvious that this was a "double-date".

This is one of those things I should just laugh off, but I like that guy and it's kind of stinging to know that he wasn't as interested. Oh well. So does anyone have any ideas to payback Friend C for her meddling ways...I'd hate for her kindness to go unrewarded.

Survivor Recap

Okay, I'm just letting you know right now that every Friday I'm going to post a Survivor Recap.

First of all....I just feel like I should say...

SHANE IS A MORON!

A self-proclaimed "34 year old going on 12", he's just a whiner. If you want to go home that bad then just go home. I would have voted him off. As a matter of fact, I'd probably vote for him EVERY time no matter what. (Incidentally, that's probably why I'm not a good choice for this show because I can't let stuff go. Seriously, I still occasionally stew over something that happened this past summer. Yeah, I know...I have an issue. But I'm sure you have yours too.) Anyway, Shane drives me batty.

What's her name that lost the fishing spear (see...she made quite an impression...lol). Okay, if you don't know anything about spear fishing and your tribe only has ONE spear...don't ask to be the first to use it. I do not fish. I would not have thought I could catch fish. If I can't fish in my own home town then what the heck would make me think I could fish in Panama? Well, nameless girl, takes out the only fast and efficient way of catching food and promptly shoots it off her arm. It sinks down to the bottom of the sea...right along with her chance at a million dollars.

Just for the record, I would hate to have to spend one minute on Exile Island let alone days.

I don't think that Melinda deserved to be voted out last night, but I do have to say that when you know your head is on the chopping block get off your butt and try and find a way to take it off. I swear, some people wouldn't know how to get into an alliance if they had a manuel as their luxury item.

Okay...now back to regularly scheduled posting!

The Importance Of Gas

Before I get started, I'd just like to point out that this is not that kind of a post. Yes, I do find that kind of bathroom humor funny (okay fine...extremely funny) but this isn't about that. Its about the natural kind of gas.

Last week, my dad noticed that the glass cap on the gas meter out behind our house was cracked. He likes to worry about stuff like that so he called out the gas company. They agreed that the meter would need to be replaced. To accomplish that, the gas would have to be turned off. No biggie...they'd turn it right back on. Well, when they went to turn it back on they did a pressure test. Apparently we had a gas leak somewhere. They would not be turning the gas back on. Just great.

My mom assured me that this would not be a problem; nevermind the fact that most of the appliances and heaters in the house run on gas. We have some hot plates...we can just heat water on there (for essential things like washing your face and cleaning the dishes). I have a YMCA membership...you can just shower there after swimming. We'll get out the crock pot and experiment for dinners. There are plenty of quilts and blankets for the bed...wear socks and long pjs. Yeah...we'll be just fine.

I'm going to let you in on a little secret or secrets as the case turned out to be. Hot plates don't heat anything nearly as fast as the stove does. I had to add about 15 minutes to my morning routine because I was waiting for the water to heat before I could wash my face. That's the first thing I do so there went my three snooze taps each morning. But, you'd be proud...I did learn to multitask and got my lunch made while I was waiting around in the kitchen.

The world is a backwards place when you put your dirty dishes in the dishwasher to hold them until you're ready to pull them out and wash them by hand.

Yes, the Y has showers. And they have hot water...something I was lacking at home. But, thanks to someone who kept talking about "going" in the shower, all I could think about was all the ickiness that had probably happened to the shower floor. Do you really think they clean those things? So, I pulled out my trusty shower shoes from college and made it work. Stinking just wasn't an option for me.

As for the crock pot...we eat out...a lot. But if you're interested my mom has a really good turkey and stuffing recipe that didn't turn out half bad.

Bedtime wasn't too bad. I normally wear long pjs and socks to bed year round. For some reason, I get extremely cold so the blankets were already on my bed. Thankfully, we didn't have any freezing night temperatures.

So, because I care about my readers so much, I've come up with an emergency plan for you just in case something like this should happen to you. Here it is: 1-800-448-2296 (that's the number for reservations at The Holiday Inn).

And finally, this sad tale does have a happy ending. The gas was turned back on Tuesday night after several days of inconvenience and $900 to replace the pipes. I've never been so happy to have gas!

The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Today I was payin' for my raisin'.

Let's just say that I hit my rebellious peak early. It started in Kindergarten and well continued right up through fifth grade. I talked back, I didn't share, I was bratty, I talked during class, I made fun of people, I bit other babies...well you get the point. Bad to the bone. My mom likes to say that they prayed every night for direction. They just couldn't understand what they were doing wrong. I like to say that they had it easy when the biggest thing I did wrong was talk back to the teacher...no wait I did forge my mom's signature once and then lied about it when I was caught. They are grateful that I didn't hit this peak during high school when the damage could have been really bad. I mean I didn't have strange friends. I didn't have a bad boyfriends. I didn't end up pregnant. I didn't do drugs. They had it relatively easy.

But today, I paid for everything I must have done or even thought about doing wrong when I was in elementary. Today, all the fifth grade teachers were out for various things. There were only subs. The kids must have smelled fresh blood when they stepped off the bus. How else do you explain the horrible rotten behavior? They talked back. They were rude. They refused to do their work. They rolled their eyes (a hot button of mine). They cheated on quizzes. They made fun of people. They did it all. If it was bad they did it. By 10:30am this morning I started fantasizing about bedtime. Anything to just make this day go away.

All this, well and the other five weeks I've been subbing in fifth grade, makes me wonder when did kids get this way? Sure I was a trouble maker in elementary, but I don't think I was this disrespectful. And I can say that my parents hardly ever sided with me...they took up with the teacher. I seriously had a moment of doubt that I was in the right profession when I thought they couldn't pay me enough to teach here for another second. I wanted to throw my hands up and walk out. Then I remembered that I am not in a position to throw my hands up and walk out. Darn. Anyway, tomorrow has to be better than today.

Ride A Cowboy

I did something tonight that I haven't done in several years. I had a "date night" with my daddy. I'm an only child, a girl to boot, and I don't always appreciate the things that my dad likes. I can't stand fishing....any part of it. It's torture. It's his favorite thing to do. I don't enjoy hunting. I do like shooting a gun, but the trying to blend in with the trees...not so much. I did enjoy football games but mostly because I liked watching the guys in their uniforms. Okay so what...I'm a little sexist. Anyway, all of that was said to make the point that we have "date nights" because we didn't get to spend a lot of time together doing things.

While I was growing up, at least once a month, Daddy and I would go and do something together that we both enjoyed. During football season it was Friday night home games. He loved telling me about the plays and found it really funny when I'd ask what inning we were in. Sometimes we'd go and see a movie. Several years back the Monster Truck Rally started making a yearly appearance and I discovered that I like big things that make a lot of noise. So, we both enjoy that. Here lately, we've bonded over NASCAR.

I think that it's important that we find some common ground. My father has worked hard his whole life for his family. He held down two jobs while I was in college so that I wouldn't be as in debt when I got out. He's always there for me. He loves to help me out anyway he can. And sometimes I don't appreciate that, but there is one thing that I will know for certain for as long as I live. My father loves me.

Now, as for tonight's date. I bought tickets to a bull riding event that came to town. Daddy and I spend a lot of time watching bull riding on OLN. Anyway, as part of his birthday present I forked over an outrageous amount of money and got us second row seats right in front of the chute. There weren't any wrecks but there were some really good rides. Usually I'm not the cowboy type but these guys were hot tonight.

I think the cutest cowboy there sat right next to me. He was probably six or seven. Before the event started they were playing some country songs and Big and Rich's Save A Horse Ride A Cowboy came on. This little guy got up and started dancing and singing along. He knew every word...it was too cute. His father got a kick out of him too. He looked over at me and I winked at him. My reward was a huge grin and little more booty shaking! And speaking of shaking, there was a girl in the row in front of us that was getting her groove on. She was busting out moves that I didn't learn till college. Watch out guys...this girl should come with a warning.

Tonight was a lot of fun! It's nights like this that put to rest any fears or doubts that my father was disappointed to have a make up wearing, shopping addicted girly girl instead of a son.

Currently Unavailable

GGGRRRR. Sometimes I really hate the internet! Here I am, just simply trying to look at my blog and all I can get is that The Page Your Are Trying To View Is Currently Unavailable line. Now the really funny part of this is that I can get to my dashboard and type this post, but can I look at my blog. No. What a pain.

One Of Those Days

Today a lot of bloggable things happened. Each could have it's own post but I'm lazy and besides who would read four different posts?

First, today was my last day at the scrapbook store. I was a little sad and a whole lot excited. It was weird because there was no fanfare. Not that I needed a parade or anything. All I got was a little "see you around". But, I did enjoy working there and I will be back. That is the best scrapbooking place around.

Second, I met with the teacher that I'm going to be subbing for for at least the next month. I'm actually going to be doing the real thing...lesson plans, grades, tests, TAKS prep. I should be getting paid more than I am. Yeah...I'm bitter about it. But she was really nice and I adore the women that also teach in that grade. If only I could take them with me wherever I end up.

Third, I ate at one of my favorite places today. I love Taco Bueno. And for those of you who don't have one...poor you. The food is great. The service isn't. The following just drives me batty. Most people that know me will tell you that I'm pretty tough when it comes to wait staff at restaurants and drive through windows. Today, this is pretty much how the conversation went:
Drive Through Board Voice: "So that's a beef nacho salad and a medium Coke. Would you like hot sauce with that?"
Steff: "No. But could you please put in some extra napkins."
Drive Through Board Voice: "Sure. Your total is $4.22. Please pull around."
Drive Through Window Face: "Here is your order."
Steff (as she pulls out the hot sauce to hand back to the window face) "I didn't ask for hot sauce. As a matter of fact I actually said no the hot sauce."
Drive Through Window Face: "Sorry but we can't take food back once it's left the building."
Steff: "What?! This hasn't been anywhere but in your hands and in this sack."
Drive Through Window Face: "Sorry ma'am. That's our policy."
Steff: "Then why even bother to ask me if you're going to give it to me anyway?"
Drive Through Window Face (now starting to realize she should have just taken the freakin' hot sauce back) "Well, I didn't actually ask. The person taking the order asks and the person who sacks up the food puts the hot sauce in the bag."
Steff: "Your system sucks lady."

I was already pissed about the dang hot sauce. Imagine my displeasure when I got to my lunch table and didn't have a single napkin. Good thing I wasn't still on the property!

Fourth, my cordless mouse is dying. His batteries are starting to go. If I want to scroll around or click on something I have to pick him up and turn him over and push the white connect button. One would have assumed that I'd just get up and riffle thought the drawer for some new batteries. Umm did I mention that I'm kind of lazy tonight? Maybe picking him up and turning him over is therapeutic or something. I don't know.

It's late and I'm tired.

Survivor Junkie!!!

How about that...short and sweet?!

Bare Naked Ladies

Q: Does swimming really do your body any good?
A: If swimming is good for your body, please explain whales.

Exercise is one of those things that I don't really like doing, but I do it because it's good for me and blah blah blah. My exercise of choice? Water aerobics. I really do like it...much more than I'd actually thought. There are several good things such as: meeting new people, getting all the advice I'll ever need about grandkids and menopause, getting to wear my swimsuit all year long (no Mister there will NOT be pictures), the obvious health benefits, and the fact that chlorine isn't as offensive as the smell of sweat. While on the whole I love water aerobics....I hate the women's' locker room.

This strong dislike of the locker room has nothing to do with the cleanliness aspect or the lack of good equipment (namely the hot tub) but with bare naked ladies. Perhaps there is something about being at the YMCA that just frees some people. Modesty is shed right along with the clothes they wear into the building. Whatever it is, there are several ladies that have been infected with the need to walk around and shower naked. Okay, so everyone showers naked, but I bet you at least pull the shower curtain closed. I was trying to avoid this but I don't think you'll truly get it unless you picture it. Feel free to use the little black bars or that blurry thing in your mental pictures!

Today, I came into the dressing room to change and I noticed that there was a naked butt being reflected in the mirror. My eyes widened a little, but I'm becoming used to this. I continued into my little changing room and did my stuff. I came out and put my things in a locker. Nothing strange about that. I grabbed a towel and headed out to the pool via the shower room. This is where the "some material may not be suitable for children under 18" comes in. I heard the water running full blast, but all of the showers were open. Thinking that someone just left the water running I investigated. We're practically in drought here so we should conserve water wherever we can. So, I get close and turn to reach in and turn off the shower and come really up close and personal...the naked kind of personal with an elderly woman. Yeah...it was pretty nasty in real life too. Anyway, as I'm stumbling over an apology she just smiles and turns around. The front wasn't any better than the back. Ick. I quickly turned and found my way to the door. Then it dawned on me that her shower was open. My goodness the woman should have been charging an entertainment tax!

I wish I could say that this was a one time thing, but I don't think it will be. I was comforted by one small fact. According to the male life guard, the men are naked from the time they enter the locker room till the time they leave the locker room...even in the hot tub. Makes me thankful for small mercies such as the fact that all the women use the hot tub in swimsuits...at least I hope they do...

The Ordinary Days

Today was a wonderful day!
Nothing extraordinary happened...just a lot of good ordinary things.

I got to sleep late.
My dad offered to do the breakfast dishes.
My favorite song was on the radio so while I was getting dressed I got to dance around and pretend I was a rock star.
My fat jeans are officially too big.
I had lunch with a sweet friend.
I ran into my crush at the grocery store and he initiated the conversation.
I tried a new restaurant and the food was wonderful!
I spent a very pleasurable evening with that guy.

I think that sometimes I get way too caught up in looking for that extraordinary thing that defines my day. Today I just sat back and counted blessings. Tonight I am one happy girl and for today the ordinary (pause for dramatic effect) was extraordinary.

Lost In The Shuffle

A few days ago I wrote a post about my TV debut in New York City. It came along with a post about the changes in my life. Anyway, this was a great part of my trip and I'd hate for anyone to miss a segment of my tales. Really people...I'm doing this for your own good.

A Crafty Project

See how crafty I am! I'm in a Circle Journal group and we had to make a way to sign in on our journal. This is mine. I took a 4x4 square of white Bazzill cardstock and then cut out the large S. I put a square of Making Memories paper behind it. The inking was courtesy of my mom who does Stampin' Up. The words at the bottom are some of my favorite things that start with the letter S and then I signed my name on the side.

For those of you who do scrapbooking I'm sure this is neat. For those of you who don't I'm sure this seems like the waste of perfectly good blog space. :op

The Only Thing That Stays The Same Is Everything Changes

Big changes are coming to my little world.

I quit my job. I had a part time job that was going to supplement my subbing. I didn't know how steady that would be so I figured that it would be better to have something with a steady income so I took a part time position at the local scrapbook store. I do love it (well except for the whole cleaning part...which is NOT why I quit) but something better came along in the subbing department. The subbing thing will let me sub five days a week for several weeks...also known as a long term assignment. I debated long and hard about this because I'm a penny watcher and the bottom line is important to me. I'm trying to get out of my old bedroom and zero funds going into the bank account isn't conducive to that goal. So, Friday, I gave my boss the news. She handled it okay I'd say with a little guilt thrown in for good measure. But seriously, teaching is what I went $20,000 into debt to pursue and I need to focus on that goal. So, as soon as my two weeks are up (I wasn't a total witch) I'm going to be a single income person again. There is good and bad to this decision, but I think that this is for the best.

Quitting might not sound like a big change to some people, but believe me, it has certainly been big for me. I hate uncertainty. I like knowing what's coming down the pike and being prepared. Sometimes I make plans for all outcomes. Oh great...did I just admit to being a worry wart? I'd like to think of it as cautious rather than worry wart. I made a comment on a friend's blog that I thought she was brave for just stepping out there. Well, I'm not a step-outer. At least without knowing exactly what I'm stepping in. So, this is a big change for me, but I have a feeling that it's the best thing I could have done!

I'm A TV Star!!!

Ha...got you with that one didn't I? Okay so I'm not really a Hollywood starlet, but I was on NATIONAL television when I was in New York City. How cool is that?! You can say you knew me when...

First, I think it's only fair to let you in on my little crush on Dave Price. It'll make this post make much more sense. Anyway, back to Dave...he's the weather man on CBS's The Early Show. He has a somewhat risque sense of humor and I can relate. When we firmed up our plans for New York I just KNEW that I had to try and met Dave. Truth be told, this was one of my highlights from the trip. Did D enjoy it...not as much.

Monday night I bought some poster board at the drugstore on the corner and made the neatest sign. It was a to do list for our trip and at the top was Meet Dave Price. I thought it was very catchy. Anyway, that was the night before the big transit strike thing happened. I made sure we left bright and early (5:45am) because I was sure we'd have to walk to get there. Not even that could really put a damper on things though. We were picked up by some really nice people in a van...sounds like the intro to a really bad B movie. They dropped us off about a block from the studio. And apparently we didn't have to be there that early...we beat everyone...probably including Dave. So we went to a little coffee shop around the corner. Here's a funny bonus story...D ordered a latte. It was on the menu, but the guy behind the counter just didn't understand the term latte. I'm not sure what she exactly ended up with, but it was kind of funny. At least for me. Finally, people started milling around the set and we bumped into some really neat characters.

There was the guy that sets up the hot drink bar. He was nice...in a pushy kind of way...you need hot cider, you look like you could use some hot cider, come and get some hot cider. There were some people from Texas so we had a common connection. They were really sweet older women. And then there was Steve Cohen...the producer of the show. He came over and was over joyed to see people because he wasn't sure anyone would show with the strike and all. So, me being the people person that I am, started chatting him up about our trip and then I whipped out the sign. The sign that got us on TV. The sign that Steve just loved. The sign that got us inside the General Motors building between shots. The sign that got us on TV...did I mention that?

Okay, I realize that this probably isn't as exciting for you as it was for me (and because I know attention spans are probably short) I'll just wrap this up. We did get to see Dave Price. He did come over to our sign and talked to us. He did steal our marker too. But that's a little price to pay to have gotten to meet Dave Price. D might not think so...it was her marker. LOL. Anyway, I was on national TV and I'm still pretty excited by that!

Better

Thanks for all the well wishes! I am indeed feeling much better today. Boy, I guess I'd forgotten how long it takes to get your stomach back in shape after several bouts of retching. You know you're back to normal when you can tolerate a stuffed jalapeno pepper wrapped in bacon.

My week is pretty much packed, but I'll make time to blog this afternoon or perhaps tonight. There are a lot of things happening that I'm excited about. Details to follow.

Taking A Sick Day

When I was growing up, my mom would let me have "mental health" days off from school. She usually called the school and said I was "sick" but should be better tomorrow and return to school. It always sucked when she called me in sick and I actually was sick. I hate being sick (especially of the stomach sick variety) and I'm just as bad as a man...I whine and complain when I'm not conked out on the couch or in bed.

Well, today was one of those real sick days. I will not give out details, but lets just say that it wasn't pleasant...for anyone in my household. Thankfully, the stomach aspect has seemed to settle down to be replaced by acid reflux. I have GERD and this kind of thing always aggravates it. Anyway, I've progressed from water, to Sprite, and now to milk.

I did wake up from one of my many naps to tell my mom that my back and neck hurt and that I didn't feel well. She felt me (a running joke in my house as I was a slight hypocondriac when I was growing up) and I did indeed feel warm. So, in addition to a sore stomach, I seem to have flu symptoms. I haven't gotten brave enough to take the Advil because I absolutely do not want another "upset stomach" incident. But, my options are dwindling at a rapid pace.

So, for those few of you who stop by on a pretty regular basis, I haven't died...yet. Just a little under the weather. Hopefully, I'll be back to New York City stories and the everyday happenings of my life shortly.

That Dreaded 1%

I love my job...99% of the time. I work at the local scrapbook store so it's pretty close to heaven being around all those products and getting all kinds of ideas. I'm a friendly kind of gal so I'm on a first name basis with most of the customers too. I like all these things about my job. But, alas, there is one thing that I can't stand.

I HATE to clean the classroom!

Cleaning the classroom involves sweeping this big room. Then I have to mop to get the gunk off the floor. I have to scrape glue spots off the tables and wipe them down. I have to dust all the machines. The fridge must be cleaned too. And all of this seems to need to be done every single day I'm there.

I usually keep my inner groaning and moaning to myself, but Friday a little barb slipped out and unfortunately my boss heard me. Thankfully, she's pretty laid back so she just laughed and assured me that the other part time girl is getting her fair share of cleaning the classroom too. Either way, I still HATE it.

A friend sent the following email to me the day after my classroom cleaning rant so I felt marginally better about the whole thing. But I bet you ten dollars that I have to clean the classroom today....grrrr.

We all have moments when......

I HATE MY JOB

When you have an "I Hate My Job" day, try this. On your way home from work, stop at your pharmacy and go to the thermometer section and purchase a rectal thermometer made by Johnson & Johnson. Be very sure you get this brand.

When you get home, lock your doors, draw the curtains and disconnect the phone so you will not be disturbed. Change into very comfortable clothing and sit in your favorite chair. Open the package and removed the thermometer.

Now, carefully place it on a table or a surface so that it will not become chipped or broken. Now the fun part begins.

Take out the literature and read it carefully. You will notice that in small print there is a statement, "Every Rectal Thermometer made by Johnson& Johnson is "personally tested". Now, close your eyes and repeat out loud five times, "I am so glad I do not work in the Thermometer quality control at Johnson & Johnson."

HAVE A NICE DAY AND REMEMBER, THERE IS ALWAYS SOMEONE ELSE WITH A JOB THAT IS MORE OF A PAIN IN THE ASS THAN YOURS.

And Ron Will Stay With The Bus

Probably one of my most favorite things that we did on our trip was a city wide guided tour. I had actually heard about this from a friend that had gone to NYC in November and had a good time. It was a six hour tour that took us to several must-see sights around New York. This is again something that I would highly recommend if you're on a budget and want to get the highlights of the city. New York Party Shuttle Tours.

Anyway, we were supposed to be in Times Square at 8:30am so we got up early. Now normally on vacations you're supposed to sleep late and really enjoy yourself. We were up before the sun was practically every morning we were there. Anyway, we got up and got dressed and headed out. (Bethany this is just for you!) My friend had given me a subway map and great tips for getting around the city. She also helped me understand why one train had three names. I was so proud of myself that I remembered the 3 was the express train and to celebrate that I had Deniece take a picture of me pointing to the 3 on a subway sign. We went down into the bowels of the city and bought our all day pass (another tip from B) and then stepped up to the platform to wait for our train. Somewhere among people watching and watch watching I noticed that the trains on the other side were going in the direction that we needed to be going. The train we were going to get on was going this way and we needed to be going that way. So, up the stairs we went and crossed the street to the other subway entrance. After several trips up and down the stairs we finally got on the right platform and on the right train. I was very surprised. I was expecting dirty and crowded, but it wasn't bad. We got where we needed to be and it was actually a pretty fun experience.

Well, I should clarify that the experience was fun on Monday since the public transit workers went on strike Tuesday. This was a major deal...especially in the wallet area. Thankfully, we were smart and had planned for something of this nature. And as an added bonus...more taxi rides!!! I know I've gone on and on about these little rides of death, but I think that was one thing about New York that I will never forget. I even bought a Christmas ornament of a little taxi to hang on the Christmas tree from now on.

Anyway, back to this tour. We had the neatest guy for tour guide. He'd moved to New York from the heartland and had been in NYC for 30 years. He knew all kinds of neat little things that you wouldn't learn on your own touring the city. He totally made our trip enjoyable! I think my favorite thing he told us was that Ron would stay with the bus. Everywhere we stopped, Tom would say that we could feel safe leaving things on the bus because Ron would be staying with the bus. Poor Ron...he was always with the bus. If you hadn't noticed I'm easily amused. And this just struck me as funny each time Tom said it. Here is just a little run down of some of the more memorable stops:

1. Pier 17 - I had my first "city" hot dog there for lunch. Okay it was my only city hot dog, but it was good. This was also where we saw the Brooklyn Bridge, the Manhattan Bridge, and Brooklyn. Oh we also got up close and personal with some pigeons!

2. Staten Island Ferry - This was neat. It's also as close to the Statue of Liberty as we got. Boy was it cold on the water! I think I probably took an entire roll of film just at this one spot.

3. The World Trade Center Site - I'm not sure what I was expecting (probably to still see rubble sitting around) to see. It was very somber and made me feel very proud to be an American. I think it would be neat to go back and see the site after the memorial has been built.

4. Fifth Avenue - I'm girly to the core so this just spoke to me! Deniece and I went shopping the next day, but boy was my heart racing as Tom pointed out all those uppity shops!

5. Wall Street - I'm not good with numbers, but I had fun exploring this little piece of New York. And of course there is that huge bull. Did you know that it's supposed to bring you good luck if you rub it? Well guess what the most rubbed place is? Yeah...the balls. Once chick was even having her picture taken where it looked like her head was up it's rear. Oh goodness...another one of those amusement things!

Stay tuned for the next entry...it's about my TV debut!!

My Bite Out Of The Big Apple

I have a travel bug. It normally strikes around the holidays. Two years ago I went to New Orleans. Last year I went to Las Vegas. And this year, the destination was New York City.

I went with a good friend of mine, Deniece. (She's going to do a guest post on here with her take on our trip and I'm sure she could be coerced into giving up a few insights about me.) Deniece and I met in college. We were roommates for a year and she's always been there for me. She's the absolute best! Miss her like crazy...and trouble just isn't the same without her. Be nice everyone.

People that know me tend to think I'm a little anal retentive when it comes to making plans and following a schedule. I like to know what I'm doing and what is going on...therefore I'm a gal that lives by the list. From the moment we planned the trip I had the first few days planned out. We're arriving at this time. We're taking this shuttle from the airport to the hotel. We're seeing this show this night. We're taking this tour on this day. Poor Deniece....she fell into line though bless her heart. I also started a packing list a good six weeks prior to leaving. You can never be too prepared. Anyway, all of my planning only made me more excited about this trip.

We left Dallas on Sunday morning and landed in New York City around mid-afternoon. The flight was good. We had the row to ourselves so there was no having to be nice to someone new. Not that I wouldn't have been nice. It's just ...oh nevermind. We had the row to ourselves. There wasn't a lot of turbulence and the take off still made my tummy do a little flutter. I think I'd be completely happy just taking off and landing. That's my favorite part of flying.

We stayed at the Hotel Newton. It was located Uptown near 96th Street. It had the highest rating for economy hotels on Expedia. We were particularly interested in how clean it was and how friendly the staff were. We were pleased with both. About three days before we left my mom asked me if our room had a bathroom. I said "Well of course!" What kind of hotel has rooms without bathrooms. Apparently the Hotel Newton. Thankfully after a quick check with the very friendly reservation guy all thoughts of having to share a public restroom were laid to rest...our room had a private bath. This hotel was great and I would recommend it if you're going to be traveling to New York City anytime soon. If you're going to be spending most of your time out on the town and just using your hotel room to rest each night then you'll like this hotel. If you need things inside of your hotel to keep you busy then you'll probably just want to find somewhere else, but for our humble needs it was wonderful!

Sunday night we went to see a Broadway show. We saw Beauty and The Beast. It was so beautiful! I've loved this Disney movie for a long time (I even went through a serious "crush" phase on the Beast...I had sheets, stuffed animals, a Belle barbie doll...you get the picture) so I was thrilled to be able to get tickets to see it. We had great seats. They were pretty much center stage and we were row R so we were back a little, but it was still fantastic. The set and costumes were so detailed and, like I said, beautiful. I thoroughly enjoyed myself that night.

I should throw in the fact that I had my first taxi ride while in New York. If you've ever ridden in a taxi, then you know that there are these little leather straps hanging from the ceiling of the car. I'm very up close and personal with why these are there! The driver was a nut!!! Some of you might be recalling the I'm That Driver post...well this guy was ten times worse than that! We wove in and out of traffic at high rates of speed. We tested the brakes every few hundred yards. Life passed before my eyes several times. And all of this took place in a matter of minutes. The ride back to the hotel after the show was even worse. I would have slid straight under the passenger's seat had it not been for those dandy little leather straps. All in all, I think that a New York City taxi ride is something everyone should have to experience. While it was certainly scary at some points it was fun and I'm glad that I got to do it!

Well, that concludes this portion of the story. My fingers are kinda starting to cramp, but I will be back with more thrilling details!

The Boxes...They Have Returned

The boxes have made their return to the house. Yesterday they were just stacked on the back porch...mocking me. Today, I had to get up close and personal with these dreaded boxes. The boxes in question are those same boxes that drove me batty before Christmas. Yet this time, it's time to take down all those decorations and send them back to their vacation home (aka: the store room).

I can't decide which is worse...there is no better to this side of the holidays. It does seem that taking it all down has gone a little faster than the actual putting it up. At last, the house is starting to resemble it's former pre-Christmas self.

On another note, I am shamelessly stealing the "guest author" idea from Hick. The next few posts will be centered around my recent trip to New York City. I had a really good time (with a little frustration thrown in with the public transportation system). Anyway, my good friend and travel companion will be making a guest apperance and sharing her take on me and our trip. This should be fun! She's a great writer and I think it'll be an enjoyable read. No promises on when her post will appear because I'm a procrastinator (ahem...the Christmas pictures) so it might be a few days or even next week, but I promised her a big intro so she'll get her due.

Well, I'm off to bed. Tomorrow, the boxes and I are going for Round Two.

You Don't Mess With Tradition!

Happy New Year!!!

Well, the pajama party was kind of a dud. I had a good time, but he had to work and didn't make it to the party. All that fuss over pajamas for naught....oh well. I still got some cute (in the baby ducks kind of way) pajama bottoms out of the deal. And sorry...I didn't take a single picture (you who was curious).
There was a mini revelation last night too. I'm on a fast track to becoming an old foogie. I was yawning and wishing I could just hit the sack at about 11:30pm. But yes, I did watch the ball drop...twice in fact. I also probably drove everyone crazy because I kept saying "I've been there! I've been there!". I can't help it. New York excitement is still running high for me!
Okay, I think I'm ready to get on with this post. There are some traditions that you just don't mess with...well at least in our family. One of those traditions includes eating your black-eyed peas and collard greens on New Year's day. The black-eyed peas are supposed to represent good luck financially in the coming year. Same goes for the collard greens. I like black-eyed peas sorta. I mean I can eat them once or twice and then I'm done with them. But I'm not fond of collards at all. But it's tradition and you don't mess with tradition.
Perhaps I'm just in my own little world but I just thought that everyone ate black-eyed peas on New Year's, but some friends that are from the North said that black-eyed peas are cow food. Well, all I can say is bring them on...I'll take your financial luck this year!
Whatever your traditions, I hope that 2006 is a wonderful year in every aspect!
